THE ARROW 1962 VOLUME FORTY-THREE Edited and published by the Arrow Board CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL Aberdeen, South Dakota Twenty-four years is a long, long while To stay on the job and work with a smile. To cooperate gladly in every way With teachers and students day after day, But Fred is a man with a high degree Of patience and kindness and loyalty Which are often strained—without a doubt By careless students, who with a shout Leave papers and mud and various messes— But who cleans it up—you get three guesses! And so, to him, for it’s his due Wc present our Arrow for sixty-two. These few lines express the views of the Arrow Board and the Student body. Our sincere thanks to Fred Sahli. 4 FOREWORD Presenting an Arrow is comparable to a car manufac- turer’s bringing out his latest model. He strives for public acceptance and a fine product. Trying for originality without being radical, he assembles a thing of beauty using the key- word, simplicity, and most of all a style which is new, but docs not become obsolete. IVith these thoughts in mind, we proudly present the 1962 Arrow. The stu- dents of Central would not be able to get along without the encouragement and guid- ance of these individuals. 82 Pageant Day Each Centralite in his own way is a fortune teller with the ability to look into the past and interpret it for the future. As he looks back over the school year, one special week stands out in the mind of the average teen as the one most worth remembering. Revolving around the central theme “Music in the Air,” the imaginative student whirled through the time consuming task of float creation, stopping only for the important ceremony of coronation on Thurs- day night. The convening of the 1961 Pageant Day court found the student casting admiring glances on the sixteen aspirants to the throne. The air of suspense was transformed to one of awesome delight when the 1960 royalty, Donna Ray and Tom Malchow, crowned Julie DiRe as queen and Dennis Adams as marshal of 1962. Perhaps this Centralite can still hear the mellow voice of Geneva Gross singing “The Way You Look Tonight” to the newly adorned Julie. As the observer looked on, a new atmosphere of combined humor and song was witnessed when the “Central High Lo’s,” comprised of Doug Smith, Dave Smith, Jerry Larson, and Bill Thompson, “took to the stage,” after which master of ceremonies Doug Brewer introduced a talented young dancer. Dee Dee Skogmo, to the reign- ing king and queen. The Centralite’s enjoyable eve- ning came to an end with Bonnie Ottenbacher’s organ solo and the ringing out of the traditional Pageant Day Song. At 10 a.m. he found the theater filled with school songs and yells as the prelude of the pep assembly which was to unveil, under the watchful eye of the new royalty, the 1962 “B” squad cheerleaders. If he were to think hard, he would recall the ratted hair and made up faces of Patty Engler and Patty Weber who were the first to be initiated into the “Cheer- stone National Honor Society.” Temporary football players Doug Smith and Bill Thompson used their brawn to carry Dianne Dahl and Kathy Hieb, junior initiates of “Cheerstone,” to their mountain of flour under which lay a cherry for each. The assisting “A” squadders were: Patti Wallace and Toni Cook (co-captains), Kathy Benkendorf, Jeanne Peterson, Judy Ernst, and Kathy Spencer. It was parade time! Eagerly the student took his respective place among the multi-colored array of floats for the mile-long journey to Simmons field where the Central Cardinals downed the Monroe Tigers. But nothing could surpass the thrill of the game between the Aberdeen Golden Eagles and the Huron Tigers. During halftime, Julie DiRe and Dennis Adams were acknowledged to all as Central’s royalty while the band played “Let Me Call You Sweetheart.” Winning by a score of 24 to 7 put the Centralite into good humor for the dance which was held following the game. A1 Hess provided the music which brought to a close the “weekend to remember.” 84 The Dirge Dance of the Sugar Plum Elves V Gone With the Wind' 85 Beautiful, Beautiful Brown Eyes Dennis Adams 86 88 Jim Olson 9 • f « , v r 'L : «V t • . , V r '1 UHEN i ', l.I'iVi ,-i is essi The float to the left, “Summertime,” from August Conklin’s homeroom, cap- tured first place in the sophomore com- petition. Norma Chilton’s homeroom, whose float was entitled “Three Coins in a Foun- tain,” received honorable mention for the sophomore class. Grand prize was claimed by the soph- omore float, “China Town,” from Gale Shoemaker’s homeroom. The junior class winners, which were announced during half time at the Pageant Day game, were awarded blue, red, and white ribbons for the first three places respectively. Those homerooms with their winning themes were: first, “Sur- rey with the Fringe on Top,” Carol Isaacs; second, “Shine on Harvest Moon,” Carrolyle Frank; and third, “Paris in the Spring,” Faye Smith. “Tenting Tonight,” from Earl Buhler’s homeroom, won honorable mention for the junior class. The Royalty float, jointly sponsored by Richard Kline’s and Cletus Noecker’s homerooms, captured second place in the senior division. The Student Coun- cil, with president Bonnie McNaughton in charge, selected the names for the floats from the basic theme of “Music in the Air. Place winners of the senior class were recognized as follows: “Volga Boatman,” Robert Pratt, first; Royalty float, second; “My Blue Heaven, Lyle Belk, third; and “Casey Jones,” Donna Ellwood, honorable men- tion. Each year, following tradition, the members of the Senior class participate in Student Government Day. Government Day This year’s annual Government Day was held on April 7. Each student from the Senior class held a position in city, county, or Federal government, or took positions in private businesses. A week before the big day the parties held their nominating con- ventions. Four days of campaigning followed. An assembly was held on Tuesday, April 4. The next day, Wednesday, the student body voted for the candidates of their choice. The city-owned voting machines were used this year. The Progressive party captured the office of mayor and three other city offices, while the Reformists filled the remaining offices. The event is carried out through the Modern Problems classes and is designed to aid students in learning about their government. A late morning assembly was held on April 4. The entire season record was 5-3. In their first game the Eagles traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, where they crushed the Little Maroons in a surprise victory, 26-0. They added another 26-0 victory when they met the Mad- ison Bulldogs at Madison. On a cold and windy Pageant Day night the Eagles overcame a first half deficit to defeat the Huron Tigers, score of 24-7. Brookings was the next victim as they fell by the wayside, 19-6. Yankton invaded Aberdeen territory and handed the Eagles their first defeat of the year, 26-14. The Eagles played host to Sioux Falls, but lost their second game by a score of 20-7. A road trip to Mitchell resulted in a 42-14 trouncing of the Kernels. In their final game, Aberdeen had a chance to gain a share of the ESD Conference championship, but the Watertown Arrows stopped the Golden Eagles, 40-20. The Eagles, playing an outstanding game, downed the Little Maroons 26-0. Roger Smith passed to Frank Zahn for the first score, Jim Hauck punched over for two more touchdowns and sophomore Arlo Fossum added the final counter. A great all-around performance by Jay Hatchett, 165-pound guard, was a big factor in the triumph. The Eagle line out- charged the bigger Sioux City forwards all evening and the Iowans were limited to 42 yards gained by rushing. EAGLES PUSH OVER BULLDOGS Aberdeen High School’s football squad scored four times in the first half to defeat the Madison Bulldogs, 26-1, in an Eastern Conference opener at Madison. The Aberdeen eleven picked up touchdowns the first two times they received the ball. Coach Don Reshetar took advantage of the chance to give his reserves some game experience. The subs couldn’t manage a TD, but they did drive to the Bulldogs’ 12 yard line on one occasion in the last quarter. Jerry Hauck, injured backfield star, returned to action long enough to score one TD, while Jim Hauck, Frank Zahn, and Bill Gallipo got the others. Tim Hopkins and Jerry Hauck each booted an extra point. Mike Enze Jay Hatchett Knute Lee 160 Ron Hendrickson Clark Guhin Sieve Larson EAGLES DUMP TIGERS It was a cold and windy evening, but neither the frost nor the bite of the Huron Tigers was sufficient to quell the victory-minded Aberdeen forces as they emerged the conquerors from their forty-third an- nual homecoming game. Facing a 7-0 deficit at the end of the first half, the Golden Eagles drove down the field and Jerry Hauck plunged over to make it 7-6 as the third quarter gun sounded. Jim Hauck on a reverse counted 34 yards and a touchdown as the Eagles forged ahead to stay. After Huron failed on a fourth down attempt, Jerry Hauck trampled off tackle for another score. The concluding score came as the two Zahns teamed up — Frank intercepting a Tiger pass and running it back some thirty yards and Jerry snatching a toss from Roger Smith in the end zone. EAGLES EKE OUT VICTORY It was the third straight victorv for Aberdeen’s Golden Eagles as they downed the Brookings Bobcats 19-6 with another of their last quarter surges. Both teams bore down on defense as the first half ended with no score, but after the third quarter it was 6-6. The Eagles’ score came on a long drive led by sophomore sensation Ario Fossum, with Jim Hauck making the actual tally. Rallying in the fourth quarter, the Eagles took the kick-off and ran it all the way on plays engineered by Roger Smith, who direc- ted and scored the touchdown. The final fireworks of the game was Smith’s 27-yard quarterback sneak — an amazing feat in itself! This touchdown was pre- ceded by some spectacular runs by Jim Hauck. Yankton’s squad scored in the first and second periods to take the big lead. Then, with 40 seconds to go in the first half, the Eagles tallied on a pass from Roger Smith to Frank Zahn. Ron Hendrick- son plunged for the extra point. Standouts for the Eagles were Smith, Hauck, and Jay Hatchett. The loss dropped the Eagles from the number one spot in the ESD Conference to a tie with Yankton. WARRIORS DEFEAT EAGLES The Golden Eagles were crushed by the powerful forces of the Sioux Falls Warriors in a 20-7 game at Simmons Field. It was the Warriors’ 11th straight victory over Aberdeen. Gary Swain, Sioux Falls’ great fullback, scored the three touchdowns. For the Eagles, Jim Hauck counted the only touchdown, scoring from the five yard line. Frank and Jerry Zahn, Tim Hopkins and Clark Guhin came in for a share of the defensive honors along with Roger Smith, who made many crucial tackles. Bill Gallipo booted the ball four times for an average of 42Vz yards per try. Twice the pigskin fell at the Warriors’ one yard line. Jon Blake Gary Kraft Dave Murphy John Hadorn Dennis Wylie Tim Hopkins EAGLES TOP KERNELS Jerry Hauck led the Aberdeen Golden Eagles to a 42-13 victory over the Mitchell Kernels here to keep ESD Conference hopes alive. Returning to the lineup after a two week absence because of injury, Hauck counted three touchdowns and six extra points and plaved fine defense for the Eagles. Quarterback. Roger Smith, playing his usual fine, game, made the longest run of the night, 75 yards. Aberdeen gained an early lead in the game as Jerry Zahn steamed across from the Mitchell 11 and Jerry Hauck converted the extra point. Mitchell then scored a TD on an Aberdeen fumble and the first period ended 7-6. Aberdeen completely dominated the rest of the game easily scoring three touchdowns in the second quarter, one in the third, and a final touchdown in the final quarter while holding the Kernels to just one more touchdown. TITLE BID FAILS Aberdeen’s Golden Eagles were turned back by a classy Watertown team 40-20 in the final struggle for the ESD crown. The score was by no means a re- flection of the true gridiron contest. The Eagles pulled within one point on three different occasions. Jerry and Jim Hauck were the big ground gainers for the Eagles. Jerry collected 14 points with two touchdowns and two extra points, while Jim had one TD. Jerry Zahn was outstanding on both offense and defense. Roger Smith turned in an excellent job to close out his prep football career. Standouts in the line were Jay Hatchett, and Clark Guhin. The game ended the Eagle season with a 5 win 3 loss record, good for third place in the ESD Conference. It was the last football game at Central for 17 seniors. Yankton held a comfortable 32-22 lead as the second half opened, but a full court press temporarily cut the Buck advantage to seven points. Yankton’s Roger Smith then hit five straight free throws to give the Bucks a 49-37 lead at the end of the third period. Aberdeen sank three quick baskets in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. Yankton’s problems increased as Gene Herold and Roger Smith each stole the ball and made layups, cutting the margin to five points. Buck gift tosses increased the lead to seven points, but layups by Smith and Larson and a free shot by Granger made the score 50-48 with 2:30 re- maining. Yankton retreated into a stall, but lost the ball with 1:45 left. The Eagles then missed the shot which could have tied the game and the contest was over. EAGLES BEAT HURON A determined Golden Eagle team rallied from a 12 point half-time deficit to down the Huron Tigers 57-54. Successive Huron spurts gave the Tigers a 34-22 lead at the half. A full court press by Aberdeen had little effect upon the Tigers as they maintained their ten point lead through the third period. The Aberdeen offense finally broke loose in the final period when Bob Lehr scored twice, bringing the Eagles within 3 points of Huron. Huron was able to increase its lead to 54-50, but shots by Smith and Rylance finally gave the Eagles a 55-54 lead. Lehr dropped the clinching basket for the Eagles. 167 Jim Granger 1961-62 JUNIOR WIN-LOSS RECORD JUNIORS OPPONENTS 67 BARNARD 42 38 COLUMBIA 45 35 COLUMBIA 33 46 SOPHOMORES 38 56 BATH 38 34 GROTON 49 59 BARNARD 26 38 DOLAND 45 38 BATH 50 35 LEOLA 48 FOUR STAR CONFERENCE TOURNEY 53 DOLAND 36 34 LEOLA 38 43 GROTON 41 39 FREDERICK 42 68 DOLAND 35 62 HECLA 42 48 LEOLA 44 48 SOPHOMORES 45 KERNELS WIN ON GIFT TOSSES The Mitchell Kernels squeezed a 42-39 victory from the Aberdeen quint in a frequently-tied game. Aberdeen’s downfall came at the free-throw line. Aberdeen counted only 11 points on gift tosses while Mitchell chalked up 14. A see-saw first half gave Aberdeen a 21-18 lead, but a Mitchell rally quickly closed the gap and the third period ended 27-25. The Kernels tied the game with five minutes left. A pair of free throws finally clinched the game for the Kernels. Roger Smith led the Aberdeen offensive effort with 15 points while Bob Lehr added 11. EAGLES BITE BULLDOGS The Aberdeen Golden Eagles staved off a Madison Bulldog rally to record a 54-53 win, their second in the ESD Conference. The Bulldogs shot to an early 6-0 advantage, but shots by Lehr and Gallipo gave the Eagles an 8-7 first quarter advantage. With fine Eagle shooting the first half ended 29-24. The game was tied 34-all in the third period. The Eagles then spurted to a 43-35 lead which was cut to 43-39 by the end of the third period. Madison caught the Eagles with 3:41 remaining, and neither side could gain a big advantage until Lehr scored on a gift toss and Smith sank a layup to give the Eagles the win. Smith arid Lehr each scored 17 for the Eagles. Dale Kaiser played his best game and counted 14 toward the Eagle effort. 168 Gene Harold Bill Gallipo Ray Rylance Dale Kaiser WARRIORS COME FROM BEHIND The Golden Eagles fell to a powerful Sioux Falls squad here 56-52. The Eagles had a 7-5 lead in a cold first quarter, but the Warriors had taken a 20-11 lead by the middle of the second period. Kaiser set Herold up for an easy lavup to begin closing the 9 point gap. Sioux Falls still held a 25-23 lead at the end of the first half to set the stage for a thrilling second half. The Eagles caught the Warriors 29-29 early in the third quarter. A four point Eagle lead quickly dwindled to a three point deficit, but the Eagles came back for more. Finally a three point play gave Sioux Falls a four point advantage and the game. Despite the defeat, the Eagles played one of their better games of the season. BROOKINGS WINS 70-51 The improved Brookings Bobcats handed the Golden Eagles another loss, beating them 70-51. The Eagles stayed close to the Bobcats until late in the first half when the Bobcats pulled away for a 27-19 lead. In the third quarter the Bobcats netted 22 points. Brookings’ 6’5” frontline average was too much for the Eagles. Roger Smith was high point man as he counted 14 points for the Eagles. Leroy Aman 169 Jerry Zahn Larry Kuhl EAGLES ROUT ARROWS Aberdeen’s first win on their home floor came when the Eagles routed the Watertown Arrows 47-43. At four different times, the Arrows held a ten point lead, but the Eagles always managed to cut it down. In the last quarter Tim Rich entered the game and hit with three straight field goals to lead the Eagle rally. Roger Smith was the top scorer for the Eagles with thirteen points, while reserve Rich had nine. Jim Granger turned in his most effective game at the post position. EAGLES GORE BUCKS 49-27 Aberdeen’s Golden Eagles avenged an earlier loss by tromping the Yankton Bucks 49-27 in their second meeting of the season. In the third quarter, the Eagles shot ahead and, in the last quarter, ran up 21 points to clinch the game. Tim Rich led the Eagles in scor- ing with 15 points and also contributed some good rebounding. Jim Granger turned in a good perform- ance at the pivot spot while Jerry Larson, Gene Herold, Bill Gallipo, and Jerry Ryan were also stand- outs. 170 The 1961 Aberdeen Juniors pose for the team photo: back (left to right) Dennis Wylie, Gary Junso, Roger Vikander, Henry Dunkel, Joe Dixon and student manager, David Guhin. This was the Tigers’ first win of the season. Aberdeen fought savagely, with a last desperate try coming when there was 2:33 left: but the Eagles’ inability to cash free throws cost them the game. Huron gained control in the last moments and cashed five of six free throws. Tim Rich led the Eagles in scoring, while Jerry Larson was the hustler on defense. KERNELS TRIM EAGLES Free throws spelled the difference, as Aberdeen fell before Mitchell’s powerful forces 51-48, dropping the Eagles into the ESD’s second division. Aberdeen ex- pended all its efforts trying to make up an early 14- point deficit. Roger Smith and Jerry Ryan shared the scoring honors with 11 and 10 points, but all team efforts were of no avail. Numerous rallies w'ere launched by the visiting Eagles, but after an early four-point lead was overcome by the Kernels, Aberdeen was never able to close the gap. 171 The 1961 co-champion sophomore squad (left to right): Ted Hogenson, Lars Herseth, Lael Kellet, Jim Ketter- ing, Steve Swisher, Melvin Rousseau, Rich Kriech, Jim Harr, Maurice Gradberg, Marshall Gehring, Roger Mayer, and Bob Mertz. Coach A1 Sahli stands behind the boys while student manager Jim May kneels in front. MADISON FREE THROWS BEAT EAGLES Jerry Larson bounced back from an early-season illness to lead the Golden Eagles’ offensive efforts, contributing 21 points, but Aberdeen succumbed to the Madison Bulldogs by virtue of three free throws. The Eagles were unable to overcome Madison’s early lead, but Larson cut the margin with a long jumper just ahead of the first period horn, leaving the score 13-11 for the Bulldogs. Jerry Ryan’s scoring punch kept Aberdeen in the ball game during the second quarter when big Jim Granger fouled out. The third period saw the Eagles rally. A last second shot from mid-court by Ryan gave the home forces the lead for the first time, 39-37. The Bulldogs, however, re- captured the lead and stalled off the valiant Aberdeen charges. Coach Belk felt that the boys played one of their better games. EAGLES SCALP WARRIORS The Eagles pulled the most surprising upset of the year in handing the Sioux Falls Warriors their third straight defeat 42-37. It was a team victory all the way, as the Eagles played a slow control game, forc- ing Sioux Falls to follow suit. The scoring was evenly distributed among seven players, with Roger Smith in the lead with 15. The Eagle offense proved superior, shooting 44% from the field. This game was a bright spot in the midst of some discouraging defeats of the Eagles.
