lurnor Class Play THE PHANTOM BELLS In a house that had been deserted for many years mysterlous nolses we1e heard by those who v1s1ted there Among the welrdest and eerlest nolses were the tlnkllng of bells footsteps of supposedly dead people and the howllng of a dog Into thls surroudlng came Laura Rhodes Patsy Carmlchael a lovely young daughter of Mark Rhodes and Mrs Rhodes Nancy Ald rldge the wlfe of Mark Rhodes They brmg wlth them the1r mald Harrlet Joanna Stalcup who IS afrald of her own shadow Shortly after thelr arrxval Darrell Carson Buddy Green a crlpple thlrty years of age comes to see hls COUSIH Laura He IS wheeled around ln h1s wheel chalr by Lela Sayles Wllma Flnes a tramed nurse Suddenly the hghts go out and Jack Page Donald Ray Cruse makes hls dramatlc entrance through the French wlndows Soon after Jack IS unbound and ungagged Vlctor Lavell Bob Brock a sulter of Laura s enters upon the scene to cause trouble between Laura and Jack Vlhlle Laura IS trymg to settle the trouble between the boys Ned Cruthers B111 Whlte the famlly lawyer and h1s secretary Marlam Booth Norma Carpenter brmg S10 000 to Mrs Rhodes He states that he IS actmg upon the orders of Mark Rhodes Soon after Mrs Rhodes slgns the recelpt for the money Joseph Kennedy the detectlve Jack McDonald beglns to lnvestlgate the mys tery of the order to brmg the money to Mrs Rhodes After the announcement of Mark Rhodes death the plot further thlckens when the package contamlng the S10 000 1S opened and the money IS found to be only pleces of newspaper From th1s pomt the play moves swlftly and Lela IS revealed as Darrells Wlfe Mr Kennedy exposes hxmself to be Mark Rhodes and orders Mrs Rhodes and Vlctor to leave the country He makes full con fesslon and accepts Darrell as h1s own son and glves hls daughter Laura to Jack Although the mystery of The Phantom Bells certalnly was a nlght mare tne presentatlon was enJoyed by everyone In celebratlng the 100th birthday of James Whltcomb Rlley poems were read as the In Between Acts They were read by Barbara Holt Joyce NIcDonald Sara Ann Owens and Robert Smedley . as 99 . . . 9 . . . . . . . . . . 9 9 .
