Senior Class History In September of 1946, a group of boys and girls met on the deck of that sea going craft S. C. H. S. This cruse was to play an important part in the lives of the members. As the ship slowly pulled from the harbor tnere was heard a cry, On to Higher Education. . Since this was an extraordinary ship, the officers were not placed in power by some higher officials, but were elected by the passengers, them- selves. The able bodied captain chosen was Elaine Lind. The first mate Jo Townsend, and second mate Leona Moody. Mrs. Mason Landis was chosen as our chaperon. Twenty-seven able seamlen started out on this great voyage. As we stopped at one port we were attacked by the Sopho- more Class an-d all members of our crew were initiated. We dropped anchor in a big port for a few months vacation during the summer. The following September we were ready to begin the second section of our Journey. We had lo-st two members and gained one, there were still twenty-six to sail on. The second year of our voyage began. Mr. O. Gheen became our chaperon, Aletha Miller became captain, Jack Sullivan first mate, and Lena Tolen second mlate. Elaine Lin-d and Patty Lewis did not start this part of our voyage with us but Norma Wilkie joined our crew. Mr. Curtis Wilson took up the position as head of the Education Department. . During the second division of our journey som.e of the students thinking they might have need for a language other than English took up Latin. This was directed by Mr. Harold Payne. ' The third section of our voyage was completed 'without mishap. A remarkable thing occurred this year. A member of another crew of S. C. H. S. which completed their voyage in 1942,rhad fallen over board, but as she was very determined, Evelyn Lynch swam very fast and boarded our ship in 1947. Officers chosen were Russell Staker, Lena Tolen, Mary Ruth McDaniel. We chose as our advisors Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Snoody. Our first important debut was an example of our talent-. The Snoddy's directed us and after we had memorized a small book, we dropped anchor in a lovely city and thrilled the people with the story of Aunt Tillie Goes To Town. A new phase of study was instituted during this section of our voyage under the leadership o-f Mrs. Kathryn Frey. This course was for those interested in the business world. We left harbor for the last year of our voyage. Our frivilous Fresh- man days were but dim memories-Our silly Sophomore frolics were things of the past-Our Junior year was a closed book--We were Seniors. Senior Class History fContinued from preceding pagei Miller came aboard at Windfall and Pimento, and soon made themselves at home upon our decks. Russell Staker continued his services as captain Lena Tolen and Jack Sullivan as first and second mates. Mrs. Kathryn Frey became sponsor. This was the year to record ours and other sailors adventures. Our record was named' the Analecta with Catherine Winters and Aletha Miller as editors. In order to defray the expenses of our cruise we sold advertising for the Analecta and presented another play, His Ozark Cousin. During this year five outstanding scientists were discovered in the new Chemistry Laboratory installed on the ship. This class was under the supervision of Mr. Marvin Snoddy. The waves roll onwardg our ship is nearing its haven un-der the hill and our voyage comes to a close. We see through the clouds the future- Com1nencement. As we look before us We see the blue waves going onward, tears fill our eyesg We cannot continue our trip abroadg we must leave Switz City' High an-d' start out in the world alone on a longer, more serious journey-the journey of life--armed with our motto, The Word American Ends In, 'I Can'. The shrill whistle of the ship is heard shrieking loudlyg our harbor IS nearg our last stop is at hand. As soon as we are docked we will start on a new trip-alone. In our trunks we have locked our pleasant mem- ories of our journey-never to be forgotten.
