Each year sixty dollars was taken from three funds, Senior Class, Junior Class and Athletic As- sociation and added to the Scholarship Fund. The Winner of the Scholarship shall receive sixty dol- lars. The Fund is controlled by the Principal of Switz City High School, the Senior Class sponsor, a representative of Switz City Bank, and the presidents of the Junior and Senior Classes. The determination of the person receiving the schol- arship is based on semester grade averages of the winner, providing that he has attended Switz City High School four years. Announcement will be made at Commencement time. Who is the lucky winner? S. enjoyed an evening at Spring Mill Inn. On the dinner tables were corsages of red roses and favors of com- pacts for the girls..The boys received buttoniers and favors, which were fountain pens. The guests were also given corsages and favors. Russel Staker, the Junior class president, extended the welcome to the Senior class, and Vance York, the Senior class president, gave the response. ' After a delicious three-course dinner, members of the classes along with the faculty and guests, retired to the recreation room where the 'Junior prophecy and the Senior will were given. The Junior prophecy was presented by Catherine Winters, Jo Town- send, Lena Tolen, Barbara Conklin, Richard Nolting, and Jack Sullivan. Using playet form these people did a very good job of delving into the past and prophesying the future for the members of the Senior class of 48 . After the Junior prophecy was given, the Seniors gave the will. Yvonne Terhune, very appropriately dressed in a red suit and a tail, played the part of the little man with the pitchfork and horns. Beatrice Landis was an angel complete with wings. After much argument be- tween Yvonne and Beatrice, members of the Junior class were willed places in heaven and elsewhere. - After the prophecy and will, dancing and various games were enjoyed the remainder of the evening. 4 , x W Y v SENIURE Senior Class History In September of 1946, a group of boys and girls met on the deck of that sea going craft S. C. H. S. This cruse was to play an important part in the lives of the members. As the ship slowly pulled from the harbor tnere was heard a cry, On to Higher Education. . Since this was an extraordinary ship, the officers were not placed in power by some higher officials, but were elected by the passengers, them- selves. The able bodied captain chosen was Elaine Lind. The first mate Jo Townsend, and second mate Leona Moody. Mrs. Mason Landis was chosen as our chaperon. Twenty-seven able seamlen started out on this great voyage. As we stopped at one port we were attacked by the Sopho- more Class an-d all members of our crew were initiated. We dropped anchor in a big port for a few months vacation during the summer. The following September we were ready to begin the second section of our Journey. We had lo-st two members and gained one, there were still twenty-six to sail on. The second year of our voyage began. Mr. O. Gheen became our chaperon, Aletha Miller became captain, Jack Sullivan first mate, and Lena Tolen second mlate. Elaine Lin-d and Patty Lewis did not start this part of our voyage with us but Norma Wilkie joined our crew. Mr. Curtis Wilson took up the position as head of the Education Department. . During the second division of our journey som.e of the students thinking they might have need for a language other than English took up Latin. This was directed by Mr. Harold Payne. ' The third section of our voyage was completed 'without mishap. A remarkable thing occurred this year. A member of another crew of S. C. H. S. which completed their voyage in 1942,rhad fallen over board, but as she was very determined, Evelyn Lynch swam very fast and boarded our ship in 1947. Officers chosen were Russell Staker, Lena Tolen, Mary Ruth McDaniel. We chose as our advisors Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Snoody. Our first important debut was an example of our talent-. The Snoddy's directed us and after we had memorized a small book, we dropped anchor in a lovely city and thrilled the people with the story of Aunt Tillie Goes To Town. A new phase of study was instituted during this section of our voyage under the leadership o-f Mrs. Kathryn Frey. This course was for those interested in the business world. We left harbor for the last year of our voyage. Our frivilous Fresh- man days were but dim memories-Our silly Sophomore frolics were things of the past-Our Junior year was a closed book--We were Seniors. Norma Wilkie left our crew for different waters. Don Smith and Ralph CContinuedl 'Wzyzzzza faazl faux Wufemz LI Wu!! Russell Staker continued his services as captain Lena Tolen and Jack Sullivan as first and second mates. Mrs. Kathryn Frey became sponsor. This was the year to record ours and other sailors adventures. Our record was named' the Analecta with Catherine Winters and Aletha Miller as editors. In order to defray the expenses of our cruise we sold advertising for the Analecta and presented another play, His Ozark Cousin. During this year five outstanding scientists were discovered in the new Chemistry Laboratory installed on the ship. This class was under the supervision of Mr. Marvin Snoddy. The waves roll onwardg our ship is nearing its haven un-der the hill and our voyage comes to a close. We see through the clouds the future- Com1nencement. As we look before us We see the blue waves going onward, tears fill our eyesg We cannot continue our trip abroadg we must leave Switz City' High an-d' start out in the world alone on a longer, more serious journey-the journey of life--armed with our motto, The Word American Ends In, 'I Can'. The shrill whistle of the ship is heard shrieking loudlyg our harbor IS nearg our last stop is at hand. As soon as we are docked we will start on a new trip-alone. In our trunks we have locked our pleasant mem- ories of our journey-never to be forgotten. A JUNIURS :YW ,' A Junior Class History We, the happy-go-lucky Juniors of 1949, have suddenly come to the realization that there are many, many rungs in this long ladder to success. , In the fall of 1948 we entered the high school as a mob of Jolly Juniors with a total of 28 members. Luck favored us by adding one to our number, Wilma Carpenter, originally from Lyons High School. How- ever, we lost a member, Wanda Roberts, who moved away. Our Junior Class Play was a great success! CWe hope! We certainly enjoyed presenting it. It is the privilege of the Junior Class to give the Senior Class the annual Junior-Senior Reception at the end of the school term. We are looking forward to it. We have turned our thoughts and efforts to money-making schemes this year. We have sold so-ft drinks and candy bars at every home ball game, also magazine subscriptions, and Christmas cards. At the beginning of the school term we had seven members of our class represented on the ball teams but unfortunately John Gastineau re- ceived a broken arm in combat at Bloomfield. The remaining six who are members of the team are: Charles Justus, John Skomp, Charles Allen, James Inman, and Charles Hamner. We also have seven members par- ticipating in the band. They are: Julia Clayton, Bonnie Borders, Mary Martha Greves, John Gastineau, Joe Harrell, Laverne Roudebush, and David Roudebush. Now it's plain to see that we haven't absorbed an overdose of know- ledge, but we have endeavored to contribute our part toward the up- building and advancement of our school. J UN IORS J. Inman, J. More laughs were stirred when Uncle Ike showed up from Alaska hotly pursued by Klondike Kate, Joan Miller. Richard Barnard and Mary M. Greves seemed to be oh, so covered with chicken feathers. Kilroy did not know whether he was Kilroy, Leroy, or Jim Harris. Bonnie Borders was a typical neighbor girl. Calendar Sept. 2-Enrollment--No loafing-Four solids a must! We were all curious over the purpose of the building and discovered that it was erected for housing classes in Agriculture, shop and mgusic. - The building is divided into three rooms which are oil heated and attractively finished with knotty pine. All agriculture, shop, glee club, and band classes meet in the annex. We find this addition to our school a very pleasant and comfortable place in which to hold classes. As a result chemistry was included on the list of elec- tive courses open to students in our school. . N The enrollment in our first chemistry class was nine-five seniors .and four juniors. The time in class was spent equally in study and ex- periments. Rumors have it that the rooms above us were in a constantly nervous state. They were afraid that some well-meaning chemistry stu- dent would faccidentlyj discover the formula for an atom. The equipment in the science laboratory consists of one table in which supplies were kept and another in which aprons and books were placed-also purchased was a walnut-finished cabinet in which chemi- cals were kept. One of the tables has a sink with hot and cold running water, four -electric boxes and four gas outlets. At the close of the year nine students still remained-however, 'there were many burnt fingers, broken test tubes, acid eaten books and a nervous teacher. Due to some miracle every one has survived. Cafeteria News As all of you know, our Cafeteria was started last year. Many new things have been added. These new things are an improvement and also .an aid to the cooks to prepare more efficiently and quickly our delectable hot lunches. Hot lunches make us feel more like stu-dying. Well, don't they ? A new 23 case milk cooler, a G. E. deepfreeze, a potato peeler, new platesyforks, spoons, fruit juice glasses, and various cooking utensils have been purchased since last year. The expenditure in dollars for this equipment amounted to 51600. ' An average of 392 lunches a day was served the first semester, this made 29,449 meals served in 75 days. They are striving to become members of the senior band and will some day take the place of those who' grad- uate. They are progressing rapidly. The band has been a busy organization this year, full of work and good times. We played at the Worthington F'air, Campaign Rally at Lin- ton, and several of the home ball games. Eight members participated in the District contest held at Blooming- ton. The four who won first at Bloomington and two student directors, tried their best to win honors at the State contest February 19, at Terre Haute. We plan to take part in the county Band Festival to be held at Bloomfield in March and to give a Spring Festival at Switz City. The band boosters club is well organized this year and has made possible the purchase of two new uniforms, a new BB Flat Sousaphone, and a reconditioned E Flat Sousaphone. Six seniors will receive honor sweaters this year, a reward for par- ticipating in band for several years. Sweaters are to be awarded to Mary Ruth McDaniel, Lena Tolen, Catherine Winters, Jack Sullivan, Willa Dean Gibson, and Gloria Hamner. Glee Club The Glee Clubs are under the direction of Miss Morris. The girl's club has thirty members and the miixed chorus consists of forty boys and girls. We sing both religious and popular music. Members of the Glee Club went Christmas caroling and they will take part in the Spring Festival to be given in March. MAJORETTES R. McDaniel, W. Gibson, B. Gastineau BAND G. Hamner, M. Bump, M. Tolen Future Farmers oi America The Future Farmers of America, or F.F.A. as it is more commonly known, is a national organization of farm boys studying Vocational Agri- culture. The national organization is made up of state organizations including every state but one in the United States, and Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Each state F.F.A. is divided into several districts and these dis- tricts are in turn divided into local chapters, situated in most of the -schools in the districts. The Switz City F.F.A. Chapter, which was organized in the spring of 1945, now has ten Chapter Farmers, the second highest degree. At present there are two Greenhands, the rank of which all F.F.A. mem- bers start. Last year one boy, Vance York, from our chapter was awarded the Hoosier or State Farmer Degree, the third highest degree of the or- ganization, and again this year we have one boy trying for this degree, which is awarded only for outstanding records kept in record books and outstanding records of participation in school and community as well as F.F.A affairs. In the Spring of 1948, we elected new officers. They are as follows: President ...................................,............................................................... Fred Rowe Vice President ........, ......... D avi-d Roudebush Secretary .................. ........ F rank Hardesty Treasurer ........... ...................... B ill White ' Reporter ......... ............... J unior Blanton Sentinel ....................................................................................... Charles Hamner There has been three District meetings this year, at Worthington, Linton, and Bloomfield. Our chapter has been represented at two of these meetings. The next meeting, the Spring Elimination Contests, is to be held at Switz City, with our chapter as hosts. We think that our chapter and its members are doing quite well, for during the past few years, all of the projects have proved very pro- -fitable, showing several thousand dollars in net profits. i mmm I 'Jumolls' '-..,.t 'EHGWTH EjAQY 5BBDe' 'WGA SWENT H GRADE 1 SOP!-when 6.5 E FII Boys 4-I-I Clubs ' The boy's 4-H clubs had 81 members in which 78 completed their projects. Our Club has also played an active part in Judging Contests and other numerous 4-H affairs. We hope to do even better this year with Paul Duhne as Adult Leader and TFred Rowe as Junior Leader. WILLING WORKERS Junior Leader-Bob Gastineau The Willing Workers has 18 m.embers from which all but one com- pleted their projects. Our' 'Club won one sweepstakes and eight first prizes. Early in the spring, our club chose Nancy Ann Aldridge for its presi- dent, Mary Ruth McDaniels as vice president, Lena. She must be an outstanding citizen, good scholar and an able leader of inexperienced members. Two sweepstake awards were claimied by the Switz City Lassies. The awards were given to Mary Ruth McDaniels in baking and Ruby Cain in clothing and dress review. I Some of the girls work was entered in the State Fair.
