Text from Pages 1 - 190 of the 1966 volume:

Mr. D. H. Young Advisor and Friend It takes a noble person to undertake a difficult task and do it well. But it takes an even greater person to succeed with humil¬ ity. For these and other qualities, we the students of Central High wish to honor one who has given so much of himself in order that others might benefit. In him exists the authority of a president, the competence of a banker, the patience of a doctor, and the understanding of a friend. In recognition of h i s untiring devotion to the aims and prin¬ ciples of Central High, we the Senior Class of 1966, dedicate this edition of THE SPARTAN to Mr. D. Hoyle Young. OUR SPECIAL IMAGE Central High School Lexington, North Carolina The word image can be defin¬ ed in many ways. It can be a men¬ tal picture, an idea, a likeness, or a reflection. High school days are filled with images, mental pictures taken by the eye, devel¬ oped in the mind, and preserved by the memory. I n this 1966 Spartan we have tried to capture in pictures some of the moments that highlight the school year. We present to you our image of our school with the sin¬ cere hope that in this picture story we have also caught your own special image of C e nt ra 1 High School. THE 1966 SPARTAN ADMINISTRATION.12 ACTIVITIES.30 CLASSES.88 ADVERTISERS.146 Special Cheerleaders practice at the most unusual places. 3 Special Pep rallies are an important part of our student’s lives. Everybody gets into the act at halftime of basketball games. Intramurals give the boys an excuse to show off their legs. Little league football players will be Central ' s future stars. He ' s not really a tiger. He ' s just a kitty cat. 5 New members are received into National Honor Society at induction. NHS gives interesting program with induction. Outstanding seniors appear on first T.V. showing of Klassroom Kwiz, an intellectual battle between schools. 6 Images Junior M a r s h a 1 s: Jean Davis, Mary Ellen Lanier, Kay Kathy Hunt, Jill Stutts, Valeria Kennedy, Karen Black, Gurley, Teresa Davis, Reid Lookabill, Melanie Hartley, Eunice Doman (Chief). 7 The sale of Junior class rings was well attended. He can never tell where his influence stops. —Henry Brooks Adams For this reason a teacher finds himself devoting count¬ less hours to his work. Often he arrives in the still ' morning hours long before the bells begin to announce the beginning of a new school day. And long after the last bell has said good-bye to the students, he finds himself walking through an empty corridor hearing his own tired footsteps and the lingering echo of laughing voices of youth that in a few short hours will become reality again. To these teachers and all the other people who plan and execute so well all the necessary duties to make our school what it is, we the students say a heart¬ felt thank-you. 13 D. H. Young . . . Principal The many facets of a principal ' s personality are reflect¬ ed every day in his administration and his relationship to tlie students. This demands that he have the patience of a parent, the understanding of a minister, the wisdom of a scholar, the courage of a soldier, and the physical strength of a giant. We find all of these qualities in Mr. Young and putting them together we feel we have a gem of a principal. Principal ' s Message: Central High School students have long associated my philosophy, Remember Who You Are, with our school activities. W e have shared this thought, often with amusements, often more seriously, but always, I think, with full awareness of its deep meaning. The longer we live, the more important it becomes that we know, and accept, and believe in, ourselves as individuals. It is necessary that we become a part of society, the crowd but it is vitally neces¬ sary, imperative , that we not lose our individual identity. As long as we Remember Who We Are, we will not lose that identity. The world i s crying for leadership. Real leadership comes from those individuals who have respect for themselves as well as respect for their fellowman. Individuals who have a sense of direction, a sense of values, who are aware of the dignity and worth of every human being, inevitably find themselves in places where their services and leadership are needed. They Know Who They Are, and they can help many wanderers to find the way. A hope, a prayer, is that no matter where you go, no matter how long you live, no matter how great your success, you will never forget to REMEM¬ BER WHO YOU ARE. Sincerely, D.H. Young 14 Assistant Principal Mr. James O. Hodges Often the Assistant Principal does not receive the credit he is due. His job is a combination of hard work, guidance, and long hours. Freshmen, with fast beating hearts, puzzled expression, and excite¬ ment shining in their eyes quickly step up to Sophomores who move slowly it seems on to become Juniors full of anticipation at becoming Seniors. All too soon we be¬ come Seniors looking back with misty eyes but also forward with fear and eager anticipation. Four years of learning, growing, loving, and laughing end all too soon. But hand in hand we begin the walk toward the future and hand in hand we face the future unafraid. 89 FRESHMAN CLASS Officers: Tommy Younts President Phil Hedrick Vice President Debbie Younts Secretary-Treasurer Nancy Young Reporter 90 Johnny Allen Myra Austin Carolyn Barker Harold Barnes Michael Barrier Frankie Beck Joey Beck Johnny Beck Tommy Beck Danny Benson Libby Berrier Linda Bivens Debbie Briggs Hildred Briggs Paulette Brown Kathy Brummett Larry Bulla Gerrie Burkhart Gail Burris Rita Carrick John Carrickhoff Dean Chapman Danny Clinard Genita Clodfelter Frank Coltrane A New World Unfolds Roger Cranford Richard Craver Deborah Conrad Jennifer Conrad 91 Gail Coppley Linda Cranford Sandra Crissman Kathy Cross Stephen Crotts Vicki Crotts Roger Curry Henry Cuzzen Gloria Davis Tracy Davis Phyllis Decker Robert Dennis Eddie Dorsett Freddie Dorsett Nancy Dorsett Linda Dunning Linda Edwards Merle Embler Brenda Everhart Jo Lynn Everhart Tim Everhart La Rue Faulkner Roger Floyd Charlene Flynn Sherry Ford Enthusiasm, Zeal Run High Diane Forrest Scott Foster Vicki Foust Audrey Frank f 92 Barbara Freedle Linda Fritts Susan Fritts Nancy Garrison Frosh Athletes -
