The purpose of the National Honor Society is to promote better school spirit and to rec- ognize students who excel in scholarship and related qualities. Members are selected by a fac- ulty advisory committee. A candidate for membership must maintain a scholastic average of 4.0 or better and excel in character, leadership, and service. The membership of this chapter of the National Honor Society consists of a maximum of ten per cent of the Junior Class and fifteen per cent of the Senior Class. Mainly responsible for the enthusiasm displayed by the students of Central Dauphin East in its first year is the Tenth Grade Spirit Club. The club was organized to create school spirit in its activities and to bring up the attendance at all its functions. In order to do this, the Spirit Club has kept the bulletin board at C.D.E. up to date, made posters and announcements for school activities, and sponsored several school dances. 78

The Central Dauphin chess club, under the lead- ership ot Mr. Reynold Martz, has been organized tor two years. The club was formed to provide an opportunity to play chess tor interested students. The club consists ot about twenty members who schedule matches dur- ing activity period. Plans are currently being made tor the club to ioin a local chess club league. Present school opponents include Susque- hanna, Bishop McDevitt, and Steelton-Highspire. Usherettes Host at Festivities The Usherettes club, comprised entirely ot junior girls, serves the school through ushering at such functions as the Christmas pageant and class plays. Un- der the direction ot Mrs. Eliza Armstrong, captains are designated tor the events and volunteers round out the ushering group. Advised by Mr. Paul Mur- phy, the Club shows educational films in classrooms and assemblies, operates the sound equipment at sports events and dances, and functions as the stage crew for plays and other events. In working together, the members of the Visual Aids Club learn the val- ue of teamwork as well as various technical skills.
