Each facet of East, each area of school life, is a beginning to new achievements. Through the scholastic program and the varied activities the doors of East open to wide and exciting opportunities. The ORIENS has recorded all that has been done by the faculty, administration, and students to prepare for that which lies beyond East. The directions of the future are attainable. East is a prelude to new directions. Table of Contents DEDICATION .......... FACULTY and ADMINISTRATION ACTIVITIES . SPORTS ...... UNDERCLASSMEN .. SENIORS ..... DAVIES Dr. Gwilym D, Davies, supervising principal of the Central Dauphin Jointure, is agraduate of the University of Pittsburgh. Here he also received his B,A,, M,Ed., and D,Ed. degrees. Before coming to this jointure, Dr. Davies taught in several schools and filled the positions of both principal and supervising principal. His teaching profession was temporarily interrupted during World War II when he served in the Navy. High School Principal JOHN W. HOLBERT B.S,, Shippensburg State College M. Ed., Pennsylvania State University The Class of 1964 constitutes East's first graduating body of students. Since you entered as sophomores in 1961, you have been providing us--the faculty and administration--with preludes to new directions. We are most grateful for the co-operation, the academic achievement, the co-curricular efforts, the many firsts, and above all the tremendous loyalty which has developed in our three short years together. As a result of your accomplishments inthe name of our school, we will be able to build for the future so that others may enjoy and appreciate the offerings of EAST HIGH SC HOOL. The Central Dauphin School System in its varied approaches to education has attempted to provide you with direction through the development of your understandings, skills, and attitudes. If you have assumed the proper mosus operandij' your direction is properly geared for the future--and may your future be replete with happiness and success. Sincerely, John W. Holbert Acting East High has experienced a very humble beginning. With this humbleness came sincere devotion and the desire to improve. The stu- dent body, faculty, and administration have grown together in experiences and accomplish- ments. With graduation comes the end of one phase of developmentg but, more important, it marks the beginning of a more adult approach to life. The time of being on your own has finally arrived, and you have the opportunity of putting to use the formal phase of your education. We who remain here at East can be thankful for the tradition and school spirit that the class of 1964 has helped to mold. No matter where your paths may lead, always remember that the spirit of East will go with you and that the doors of East High School will always be open to welcome your return. Acting ADAM B. Although the finaltally showed a 1-8-1 record, the Panthers played with the determination and courage it takes to make a team as great as they are. Our second season began with a close score of 21-18 against the Lebanon Cedars. Even though the Panthers put forth atre- mendous amount of drive, they were later nosed out by Steelton- Highspire, Lower Dauphin, Chambersburg, Bishop Mc Devitt, Carlisle, Milton Hershey, and Central Dauphin. The Panthers' clash with the Cornwall Miners proved to be an exciting one, ending in a tie score of 20-20. East's only triumph was over the Hershey Trojans, 19-0. Touchdowns were scored by Don Snyder and Joe Goldsmith. In spite of the statistics, East High's 1963 football team merits special congratulations for a job well done. The junior varsity football team proved their ability to be- come the future varsity stars of the East High gridiron. With Coach Brandt at the helm, the Little Panthers rolled up a 5-1-0 log. Although this was East's first JV team, it showed a fine spirit of determination to win in contests with stiff competition. 80 East East East East East East .l.V. Although this record might not appear extremely impressive, it is a great improvement over last year's 0 and 22 season. Many of those games lost were sacrificed only by a single or a few points. East this year obtained five victories in the Central Penn League, winning over Central Dauphin twice and York, John Harris, and Steelton - Highspire. The other three wins were accomplished in non - league competition. Kim Frankford, the high scorer of the Panthers in the '62 - '63 seasons, finished 11th in the Central Penn League total points standings this year. Kim, as well as all the other players from Nauss to Hammell to Gussy, made everyone at East extra proud. After losing to Cedar Cliff and Northern, East played hard to defeat rival C. D., but again fell short in a 2-0 contest. Losses to Cumberland Valley and Cedar Cliff ended the winless season for East. One of the most successful athletic teams at East has been the faculty basketball team. Over the past three years, this spirited team has been defeated on only three occasions-- Lower Dauphin in 19625 Penn State in 19633 and the Harlem Satellites in 1964. Other teams of the area, including faculties of William Penn, Cumberland Valley, and Susquehanna, have fallen prey to the dazzling play of the Papa Panthers. Contributing greatly to the successful playing of the team was Mr. Thorn, whose fast breaks and accurate lay-ups added a necessary consistency to the scoring. In the rebound department Mr. Fetrow and Mr. Wentzel contributed the one-two-punch to aid the successful team. However, there is no one outstanding player. Lmberger, S, Ulrich, Two of the many outstanding underclass- men are Sandy Harding and George Roksandic. Each has contributed greatly to the success of East. During the 1964 March of Dimes campaign Sandy was teenage chairman of the area. One of her prime duties was presiding at the weekly meetings. Sandy also planned and organized a Hootenanny which was held at the Zembo Mosque. Another of her major duties was arranging a county-wide bread sale, the proceeds to go to the March of Dimes. In this sale East High sold more bread than any other school in the area. Behind the scenes in the Pantherama Room can be seen another important junior. As editor of the school newspaper--a position rarely awarded an underclassman--George Roksandic proved himself a capable leader. George was responsible for a well-organized and high quality newspaper. Anyone who has read the PANTHERAMA can readily attest to the success of this endeavor. Underclassm Early in November Jan Lauver and Bob Miller participated in the annual State-wide Student Council Conference which was held at West York High School. These two students were elected by the student council to represent East. At the conference both Jan and Bob were discussion leaders. Jan conducted the dis- cussion about the powers ofthe student council. Bob was responsible for the topic concerning the various types of financial projects avail- able to student councils. .Other areas of dis- cussion dealt with sportsmanship and codes of ethics. Jan and Bob contributed much to the con- ference in their positions as discussionleaders, while gaining valuable experience and infor- mation to bring back to East. 1 The News Distinction once again came to East as the musical talent of several East High students was recognized. Six students attended District Band: Mike Schwalm and Carol Erb, seniorsg Janice Kreiser and Bill Shenenberger, juniors: and Douglas Heckert and Ben Slotznick, sophomores. The concerts were held at Annville-Cleona High School. District Orchestra members included: Gretchen Emerick, Janice Kreiser, Mike Schwalm, and Bill Shenenberger. Janice Kreiser was also selected to participate in Regional and All State Bands. Those recognized in the chorus for District Chorus were: Pat Stevick, Jeff Knight, Mary Ann Kesler, Mike Schwalm, and Ken Straub, seniorsg Steve Cropper and Dale Bieber, juniors. Manheim High School was the location for the concerts. Regionals were attended by Jeff Knight, Ken Straub, Pat Stevick, and Steve Cropper. All State choral participants included:Jeff Knight, Ken Straub, and Steve Cropper. 3, X, And there is Tish Clever who failed to appear for thejunior class officer picture. One point of their selection was based upon their enthusiastic participation and de pen dable work in school activities. These students have done above-aver- age work in their classes: and their integrity, likewise, is out- standing. As we look back to our sophomore year, we remember tramping among the scaffolds and tarpolins, having gym classes on the curb, eating lunch in the storage rooms, and traveling to C, D. in order to participate in extracurricular activities. Our major responsibility that year was chosing black and white as the school colors and the panther for the mascot. Bob Fritz was elected president of the class. With our junior year came the spliting of our class and many new experiences. We began to build both the spirit and the name of East. Al- though we did not excel in sports, the highlight of the athletic year came on the gridiron with the 7-6 victory over Lebanon. Judy Rutherford was chosen to represent East at the Youth Festival, and her escort, Carl Chronister, served as vice-chairman of the planning committee. Linda Hock won the Christmas Public Speaking Contest. The officers chosen were Bob Fritz, presidentg Carl Chronister, vice-president: Diane Lobel, sec- retaryg Barry Seace, treasurerg and Pat Hummel, historian. We selected gold and white as class colors, white rose for the flower, and Primus sumus 1We are the firsty for the motto. Senior Class Council We also chose our alma mater which was written by Lynda McElhany and Mr. Stahle. Pat Stevick was chosen as the Student Ambassador to Holland by the Colonial Park Rotary Club. In May we ended the school year with the Junior-Senior Prom which was held at the Hershey Starlight Ballroom. When September of '63 rolled around and the students entered school, it seemed inconceivable that we were Seniors. Now we were really on our own. Our newspaper, the PANTHERAMA, was organized. Our yearbook, too, was in its beginning. Jackie Light was selected to serve as editor. The ORIENS, which is the Latin equivalent for East, was chosen for the title of the book. Dave Alexander was elected presidentg Bob Fritz, vice-president, Diane Lobel, secretaryg Fran Grant, treasurerg and Barb Brought, historian. Pat Hummel reigned as Teen Queen in the area Youth Festival, and Carl Chronister served as the area chair- man, The site ofthe annual Christmas Public Speaking Contest was held in the East High auditorium, and for the second year the contest was won by an East student -- this year, Penrose Hoover. We're All Guilty, a drama, was presented in January. Our high school days were brought to a close with the prom and graduation. We have met with many firsts these past years, and are presently on the threshold of yet another -- our future.
