United, the class worked hard to win the sports events on Fall Sports Day in both the Freshman and Sophomore years and took the award for Homecoming decorations in both years. Working hard, the class of 1950 has the spirit which should make it outstanding at TCC. 102 SOPHOM ORE CLASS OFFICERS: President ..... Frank D'Amato Vice-President . . . James Salafia Secretary . . . Its 400 students have already earned two bronze plaques in decorating and sporting competitions. This class set a high standard in its presentation of Freshman Court, with an especially vituperative prosecuting attorney, and it sponsored a highly successful Soph Hop, the first ever held at Memorial Hall. Its alert and hard-working constituents give promise of greater achievements to come. X f To xx s X . I 103 Q S H , . .. ,ff - , L, wx. 1 1. .V 1 1. .,. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS: President .... Excluding the walloping administered to it by the Kutztown and CCNY aggregations, the squad has outgained all other opponents in yards gained in passing and running, by a wide margin. In addition, defensively, the seven man line that Coach Ed Creed used to full advantage this year has compiled a remarkable record for hold- ing the opponent's offensive gains to a minimum. Manning the line for the Blue Devils this year were Dan Maiewski, left end, Nick Soloway, right end, Fran Loughery, right tackle, Lou San- zaro, left tackle, Jim Macauda, Captain and right guard, John Clement, left guard, and Jim Con- nelly, center. In the backfield, Bill Detrick, Frank Veneziano, and Leo Yacaniello have alternated at quarterback, Ed Kusek, Link Nystrom, Ed Den- nehy, Tony Carbo, Bill Tabatsky, Tony Feola, have responded to Coach Creed's plea for scoring and defensive power. Use of the T-formation this year for the first time has set the team into the big college tac- tics, and the experience that was gained is ex- pected to produce an effective and forceful eleven next year. Kutztown 37-TCC 6 The Blue Devils fought hard in the opening contest against Kutztown but iust didn't click often enough. A series of fumbles was one of the main reasons for the defeat. An eighty yard run and the all-around ball play- ing of Bill Tabatsky and Nick Soloway were highlights of the game. Montclair 0-TCC 0 Led by the brilliant defensive play of Fran Loughery, Red Connolly and Jim Macauda, the TCC eleven held a favored Montclair Teachers team to a scoreless tie in the season's second game. Ed Kusek and Leo Yaconello, backs, led the attack but the failure of the passing assault offset the hard running. The stellar punting of Marty Greco helped keep the visitors from the pay dirt. Kings Point 6-TCC 6 Faced by a strong Kings Point squad the Blue Devil eleven put on an amazing performance that left the opposition more than happy to leave the field with a 6-6 tie. Noteworthy performances were put on by Bill Detrick, Herb Pennoyer, Bill Tabatsky and Dan Maiewski, while the entire line played what will probably be rated as the best defensive game of the year. Arnold 6-TCC 2 The Arnold Terriers, our downstate foe, scored in the first minute of this night contest by intercepting a pass, and then withstood the Blue Devils for the rest of the game to eke out a 6 to 2 victory. The outstanding play of the TCC line kept the Arnold offense bottled-up all night, while Ed Kusek and Bill Tabatsky turned in sparkling runs. CCNY 33-TCC 12 The purple-clad ranks of CCNY rolled to a decisive victory over the Blue Devils at Lewisohn Stadium in New York as the TCC squad failed to gain their sights. The famous Beavers had already piled up a 26 point lead before Tony Carbo hit Ed Kusek with a pass, and Ed sped 40 yards for a touchdown. The second TCC score came on a five yard sweep by Tony Carbo. TCC 26-Panzer 0 On the night of November 5, the Blue Devils gained their first win of the season by knocking over Panzer, 26-0. Led by the passing of Frank Veneziano and Tony Carbo, and some elusive running by Bill Tabatsky, Ed Kusek, and Tony Carbo, the Blue Devils were in complete control of the contest right from the beginning. The jinx had been broken. Lowell Tech 6-TCC 6 Squirming out of an almost certain defeat by scoring late in the last period, Lowell Tech deprived TCC of its second win by gaining a 6-6 tie. After breaking into the win column for the first time in the previous week's game, the TCC Blue Devils were back in the tie column. The contest was a close, hard fought battle with both squads determined on a victory. TCC 6-AIC 0 Handicapped by the loss of three first squad players, the TCC squad more than made up for the deficiency by holding the AIC gridsters to a scoreless afternoon of foot- ball. A third period score, with Ed Kusek carrying, was more than enough to assure a victory in the season's final contest. BASKETBALL The Blue Devil basketball quintet, sporting a two year record of thirty-five victories as against nine defeats, entered the 1948-49 season with a twenty-game schedule that included contests against some of the outstanding college squads in the country. Included in the schedule were: Univer- sity of Massachusetts, Kings Point Academy, Val- paraiso, Wheaton College, Tufts, Siena, Clark, American International College, and Illinois College. Led by Co-Captains Eddy Rosmarin and Bill Massa, the squad has played consistently spec- tacular ball and overwhelmed the maiority of the quintets engaged. Aided by several new members in the six-foot category, including Burr Carlson 6'5 , Bill Treadwell 6'3 , Ed Russell 6'3 , and Dick Corbett 6'3 , the Blue Devil hoopsters polished up their play under the regular standbys, Co-Captains Rosmarin and Massa, John Canaveri, Max Cogan, Frankie Johnson, Bill Detrick, Ken Pinney and Bill Anderson. Romping to victories early in the season, the Blue Devils defeated Massachusetts, Kings Point, and at Boston Garden, Fort Devens, where the team made an all-time Boston Garden foul point scoring record by converting twenty-one foul shots. Traveling next to the midwest for a tourney and several meets, the Devils upset Murray State, but were conquered by North East Missouri, which eliminated them from the event. Swinging back through Indiana and Ohio on the way home, games were played against Val- paraiso, lllinois and Wheaton. The squad downed Illinois, but was handed a defeat by both Val- paraiso and Wheaton. Returning to the home court once again, the team rebounded with a fury. Four consecutive wins were recorded against Williams, Towson, Sampson, dhd Tufts, the latter being a thrilling 47-46 victory for the TCC team. Siena, second best in the country defensively, handed TCC a 57-37 swamping. Again the Teachers rebounded and overpowered a potent Coast Guard five. Fitch- burg, the next match, was an overwhelming vic- tory for the squad which kept the aggregation on the victory trail. Throughout the current campaign an out- standing performance has been given by diminu- tive Eddie Rosmarin whose floor play earned him the Sportsman Award at the Indiana Tourney. The current success of the basketball squad can be attributed not only to the squad, but to the efTorts of Coach Ross Merrick. His desire to perfect plays, improve accuracy in shooting and develop newer attacks has resulted in material rewards. This year's quintet can assuredly be con- sidered one of the most outstanding in the col- lege's history. 1948-49 RESULTS TCC TCC TCC Massachusetts-39 Kings Point-40 Fort Devens-37 TCC Murray State-53 TCC N. The '49 team boasted such outstanding players as: Don Race, and Bob Spear, catchers, Max Cogan, Burr Carlson and Ed Fanning, pitchers, Bill Detrick, first base, Frank Vene- ziano, Dick Corbett, and Dick Yeagan, second base, Joe Smith, shortstop, Bill Clyne and Frankie Johnson, third base, Joe Kozalka, Tony Barber, John Canavari, John Bender and Bob Nelligan, field. Of the above Don Race, Bob Spears, Bill Detrick, Frank Veneziana, Joe Smith, Bill Clynes, John Canavari, and Bob Nelligan are two-letter men. Material from the Freshmen Class bolstered the squad immeasureably. Joe Dunn and Herb Pennoyer among others were expected by Coach Mailinger to have a good season. As the season opened the critical depart- ment appeared to be in pitching. Hopes were expressed that new members might bolster the apparent lack of pitchers. Coach Mailinger, who has taken over the piloting duties formerly held by Coach Creed Know football coachj has instituted a rigid training schedule for the squad in an attempt to whip them into top shape. Hopes of bettering the 1948 record of six wins and three losses were expressed as the season opened. TENNIS Plagued by rain throughout the season, the 1948 TCC Tennis team still managed to participate in seven matches out of a proposed schedule almost twice as big. Coach Philip Clark's squad won five of the seven matches downing Montclair, New Haven, Danbury, and Arnold ltwicel. Losses were suffered at the hands of Wesleyan and Albany Teachers. Members of the squad included: Captain Harold Chapin, Chandler Hicks, Salvatore Caruso, Gerald Coholan, Max Cogan, Frank Vasile, Clifford Barton, Camreon Smith, Kenneth Beatson, Calvin Wade, John Parker, Pat Riera and Bernard Cunningham. TRACK Competing in a total of seven meets, Coach Ed Owen's cindermen won 2, tied l, and lost 4 during the past season. The victories were against Arnold and at the Conference Meet which was held in New Britain, home of the defending champions. The losses were to the Yale Frosh, Springfield J. V.'s, Coast Guard and at the Triangular Meet in New Jersey. The unusual tie with Trenton took place in a downpour of rain.
