Some have made the supreme sacrifice and they will not return to the homes and friends they have loved and cherished. Others will return broken in body and in spirit while still others will have a new vision of the world, their country, and their community when they come back. They will need help in becoming adjusted to this new and strange environment. These young men and young women are intensely interested in our college. We are all parts of a great institution in which they have faith and in which they can look to with courage and confidence. They look to us to carry on to the best of our ability in this hour of great crisis. We must not let them downl Today, I am also reminded of the thousands of graduates who have entered the classrooms all through the years. These teachers have prepared many of the young men and young women who are now serving their na- tion on land, on sea, and in the air. They, too, have served the nation, they will continue to serve in peace or in war. Astyou now go forth toserve, let us recall the great contribution of those who have gone before you. May the welfare of others ever be upper- most in your minds and hearts. May you find abundant joy and success in your work. You will if you have faith in yourself, in God, and in T.C.C.l Faithfully yours, Herbert D. Welte, President Teachers College ot Connecticut New Britain ,. .f ,. L. v: aff- w .nf . ,Q , 1:4 Q. DEDICATION Our college career .... the labyrinthine hallways are lined with sta- tues and as we wend our way, in retrospect, we seem to have borrowed a chip from each old block. These are the philosophers . . . the teachers of life. In this present era of crisis when thought is deeper and more search- ing, it is to them that we turn. Perhaps, these monuments of a yesteryear, combined with the ever increasing knowledge of today, will unfold the enigma and resolve a formula for happiness. The Arts and Sciences . . Gardner, Geise, and Buck .... become our bibles and thus fortified, we will continue our journey of life .... C'm,w f1.'ff1-.N-.M ,U LCDCDKING Tl-IRGUGI-I Vivid memories of the years at TCC remain . our minds, some good, some bad, some indifferent. Among the most prominent are those of the faculty. Like most freshmen we entered the halls of old Alma Mater with shy, retiring steps, little knowing what was in store, but fearing the worst. After registration, we wandered blindly trying to find the room where our first class was to be held. There was a sympathetic look on the faces of fellow sufferers who had found the class before half of the period was over, but the look on the face of the professor was one of resignation, per- haps this thought was running through his mind, man works from sun to sun, but a professor's work is never done. 1 For the first year, I hate freshmen, and Oh, you poor benighted creatures rang in our ears and haunted us, but by our sophomore year when the stale freshman air of our class had escaped into the court, we found that the faculty was beginning to appear human. Not that we hadn't begun to see evidences of the human qualities of the profs before our sophomore year! Some of us swooned when We saw Mr. Perry Che's back now underclassmenl, and Dr. Rackley's crew cut and piercing blue eyes--if we could only whistle on paper Csighll It was through a faculty member that we first found the college den of iniquity, the lounge. Some of us shadowed Dr. Iohnson into a smoke- filled room. There, while we became accustomed to the atmosphere, he played setback. Card playing was not the only sport in which the faculty indulged, we all remember our first .glimpse of Miss Morton-she was carrying golf clubs. A big feature in the TCC sport world was Coach Flash Gordon Kaiser. We remember how he took the men out on the field, showed them a ball, this here's a ball fellows, and this here's a field, the object ' of the game is . . Fellows-remember, 565 'G our first years here, there were men. But Q A E to get backto the facu1ty.That same sport H A p field was the scene of a very exciting :Wa event in our junior year. The senior ele- qg mentary class was playing a friendly dj game of Fox and Geese when Miss Col- N ton, a former member of the physical education department, and one of the X students suffered minor brain concus- sions. Both recovered. 1 For the Latin, see Dr. Fowler. THE TELESCCDPE . . . Imbedded in our memories are other pictures. A class with Miss Weeber was not complete if she did not spend part of the time explaining the intricacies of logs from her favorite seat, the top of a desk. Nor is another event to be forgotten. Up to ourjunior year Mr. Pratt had been content with splitting chromosomes, but the war emergency stirred him into action-he ploughed up part of the campus and planted a victory garden. In the last part of our senior year, there were some additions to the faculty: Miss Sober's place as registrar was taken by Dr. Wilson who- will try anything once, some things twice : Mr. Wilhoit took over the music department. Although he has kept up the orchestra and the chorus, he will never be able to take the place of Miss Cushman with her flow- ered hats. Mr. Perry has come back and reorganized the faculty bowling team which has been making below par scores because of Dr. Richard's lack of conservatism in choosing shirts. Before bowling, Dr. Coddington sought elsewhere for exercise. Those who saw it will never forget the day he tried to contort to fit the wastepaper basket-some still claim he was tripped. None of us have forgotten those Christmas holidays after which Dr. Garrison and the former Miss Malmborg came back with stars in their eyes and rice in their hair. Dr. Gunn has left us with an indelible impression: she always dashed into class ten minutes late, wearing the hat which remained on all through the class with a silly feather flapping in the breeze. Also to be remembered is that Dr. Wampler's dog has been in the college almost as long as we have. He should get his degree soon after we get ours. fq Whether or not the faculty knows it, we 1 have been watching them for four years. l Little has escaped our glance or passed ' s XJ.. our ears. Our class situation is an illustration . . . our banner displays Class of '-45 . . . our ring says Class of '44 . Whichever class designation we will finally receive, we have had enough experience to cover both years. Do you remember in 1941 . . . ??? Freshman pigtailsp Dr. Rackley and his intriguing blue eyes and crew cut: the party at Portland: our efforts to win the plaque without success . . . Do you remember? New deans took office that year, and the dorm curfew was stretched to twelve on Saturdays. Boys playing setback filled the lounge, but, when war was declared there was plenty of room for all. Dr. Welte was president of the Eastern States and we all tramped down to New York for the big conven- tion . . . and Fred Waring. This Love of Mine was the passion that year. Dr. Wampler adopted a dog during our Sophomore year. The men slipped out slowly . . . one by one . . . until April, when those remaining left in a group. We sent the boys diaries to keep tabs on what was cookin', and we settled down to forgetting the excitement and thrills of co-education. The girls started playing setback and even learned to dance together. Dr. Coddington rode a bike to school and laughed at the gas shortage. We didn't win the plaque with the hearty cheers to the school we love so dear. Football became a fantasy. It snowed at the dorm formal and A Sleepy Lagoon serenaded lonely females. -DAY 'iff ik' While the Sinatra-Crosby feud raged, we sweated our way through Iunior training, our first summer session, Economics, and weed-plucking in the Victory Garden. Fuller, Kaiser, Howe, Rackley, and Drake left for the Armed Forces. We danced with Cadets from Wesleyan at the Iunior Prom, read 3O Seconds Over Tokyo, and took one-a-day vitamins to calm our jittery nerves as the battle of the Southwest Pacific raged on. This year, 1943, we won the Plaque and full honors at F all Sports Day with a toast to T.C.C. Aha, Morris! The boys come home on leaves and furloughs to see us in all the old familiar places. We rise and shine to the tune of one mar- riage, about six engagements, and Paper Doll. The year 1944 was grave and exciting . . . D-day, Senior training, revival of the Eastern States Conference, the dedi- cation of the plaque for our boys, and the appearance of two gold stars. We slaved over Geise and seeped in the wis- dom of World Literature and a fine professor. We are sober. Yes . . . the G.l. live keeps man alive, but we Say A Prayer For The Boys Over There, talk about a fourth term, write letters of application for positions, and creep in our petty pace from day to day. This year we make the break from out Alma Mater's womb and await not only a new life, but aspirations for a better world. 0 0 o 0 0 0 Z QP95 'PQ af g- fl go 5690928 ow' 0 S UN 1075 FL A Qu?
