New figures in the faculty included Miss Ruth Paul, dean of womeng Miss Mary Roess, assistant dean: Mr. Donald Phippin and Dr. E. Burn- ham Dunton, instructors in the department of Industrial Educationg Mr. Harold Perry, head of the department of Business Educationg Dr. Karl Garrison, assistant professor of Education, Mr. Everett Light, assistant professor of Vocational-Industrial Education. The Freshmen were initiated into the mysteries of college life by the more than willing Sophomores, while the entire student body learned that the ratio between Women and men had risen to three to one. The question of the moment seemed to be, How do you stand in the draft? For it was evident that Uncle Sam was utilizing the services of some of our fine young males. Coach Kaiser with the able assistance of Captain Navio Ottavi fashioned a gridiron team worthy of the fair name of the college despite the inroads into the reserve material caused by the draft. Led by Ottavi our stalwarts opened auspiciously with a 36-0 victory over Trenton Teachers at New Jersey. Democracy the American Way was the theme of the third annual fall convocation of the State Board of Education. Delegates were addressed by Rev. E. Dent Lackey and Dr. Edward C. Elliot, President of Purdue University. Students and faculty donned appropriate costumes as they cavorted at the Halloween party-to put the finishing touches to the month of October. Social activities were in order as November made its appearance. Seniors let down their hair at their baby partyg Les Kochanowsky M.C.'d the All-College banquet to successg the Men's A.A. held its smoker at which time athletes were given their dueg and students and guests danced at the Thanksgiving Semi-Formal. The four day Thanksgiving recess gave students a chance to catch their breath and catch up on back assignments. The football season drew to a close and found the Blue and White up with another fine record-four wins and one defeat. Tony De-Iohn and Bob Beckwith were chosen by their mates to lead next year's eleven. n On December 7 occurred the cowardly attack on Pearl Harbor and forgotten for the moment were private aiiairs as students discussed the war and listened to President Roosevelt's war message to Congress. There was no longer any doubt. We were in to the finish! After the opening shots college life approached its normal level as students and faculty alike agreed that all necessary sacrifices must be made for the war effort. The college established measures as air raid precaution and this institution be- came one of the six dispatch centers for New Britain. The Art and Music clubs presented their annual bazaar and the College Theatre gave Columbine Madonna as college activities resumed im- portance. The basketball team started out impressively with four con- secutive wins over the Alumni, Keene, Albany and Salem, and showed promise of a successful season. The Christmas recess brought, 1941 to a close and sent students home to celebrate the holidays with their families. Refreshed from the vacation, students returned on January 5, experi- enced their first air raid drill, were entertained by Elissa Landi and Tarbell the magician at assembly programs, discussed lounge conditions and possi- bilities of a summer session, prepared for and were exposed to mid-year exams, and threw their cares to the wind at the Mid-Year Informal. As the second semester got under way, an evening school was established under the direction of Dr. VVard E. Ireland of the State Department of Education. February found the tempo increasing. The Mexico Y showed our boys in blue how basketball is played south of the border by a 43-33 margin. Dormitory students enjoyed their annual weekend with a supper dance and formal. Les Kochanowsky, Frank Iasinski, Michael Stein, Edward Drake, Alice Driscoll and Claire Sweig discussed 'fThe Role of Teachers College in the National Defense Program in a radio panel over WTHT. A shortage was evident in the teaching field, and so the faculty organ- ized itself into a speakers bureau and encouraged future teachers at high school assemblies. The sale of stamps and bonds at the college gave students and faculty a chance to contribute to the war effort. March brought mild weather but no let-up in activities. John Mason Brown reviewed Broadway for an enthralled audience, Sophomores were subjected to the National Objective Tests, Co-Chairmen Alice Driscoll and Eddie Conlin piloted the Junior Prom to a magnificent conclusion, slacks were the keynote at the Women's A.A. party, and one-third of the college attended the Eastern States Conference at the Hotel Commodore in New York where Dr. Welte presided as president of the association. An indus- trial arts conference was held for two days, George Kinkade and Julia Gorman with a fine supporting cast did more than justice to the College Theatre's production of The Male Animal , a mediocre basketball sea- son was brought to a close with ten wins and six losses, March 21 brought spring but no varsity baseball, tennis, track, or golf due to financial and schedule difficulties, and alumni promenaded at their social. As March gave way to April, the four teachers colleges planned accelerated courses for students in which three semesters with an optional third term were to be offered beginning September 8, 1942. In April T.C.C.'ers tightened their belts as sugar and gas were rationed. This coupled with the rubber shortage convinced everyone that war was a serious business. Highlights of the month included the commuters' tea, the Army dance at which the Windsor Locks Airmen took off with the fair sex of T.C.C., the Music Clubs concert, and during the climactic Senior Week from April 13 to 17 under the able assistance of co-chairmen Bill Weitzke and Kay Gaffey the seniors presented a streamlined war time program which opened with an assembly program during which seniors formally assumed command , an all-college roller skating party at Lake Com- pounce, observation of classes one day and teaching classes on the next by the seniors, the complete administration of the college by seniors, and as a fitting climax to the week-the Spring Formal. Seniors elected to the administrative oflices by their classmates Were: Robert Dorsey, Presidentg Douglas Mahoney, Dean of Meng Sally Conlin, Dean of Women, Katie Bell, Assistant Dean of Womeng Harold Elovich, Supervisor of Secondary Educationg Ray Micliaelis, Supervisor of Elementary Education: Lois Sheldon, Supervisor of Primary Educationg and Gloria Goodwin, Registrar. Freshmen and Sophomores settled their differences amicably at their Hop on May l. The Junior Class picnicked on sandwiches, cake, ice cream - and ants. Seniors struggled through exams and bid farewell to col- lege years during Commencement Week. The graduates-to-be danced at the Senior Ball, attended Baccalaureate on Sunday, held a class banquet and a class night, were entertained at Mrs. Welte's picnic, and closed their careers in graduation exercises on May 22nd. As if to show that the old was just ending .and the new beginning, Admissions Day was held on the 23 and prospective undergraduates were interviewed and examined. a Thus the college year 1941-1942 drew to a close for the students of Teachers College of Connecticut.
