'A' OUR American ideal of democracy is premised upon the belief that people think for themselves upon matters requiring political decision, and act and vote accord- ingly. . . There is such a multitude of avenues of enterprise that leadership and proficiency in one line of activity does not imply leadership in others. . . Guidance has become a thought of major significance in modern education-guidance of the individual along lines in which his interests and aptitudes indicate a potential leadership and possibilities of marked proficiency. But as part of that guidance the individual needs a direction in critical, discriminating followership in matters ly- ing outside his peculiar sphere of aptitudes. . . YVe teachers need to reappraise our ideas of democracy. A realistic reappraisal would have us face the fact that critical, discriminating followcrship of the wise has become increasingly neces- sary.
