We Were Here The students who choose bookkeeping learn the fundamental principles of this course for two years. In their senior year. they apply their knowl- edge and training to bookkeeping sets. which are similar to those used in business. The academic subjects are English. Spanish. Social Studies. Biology. and Health Education. ln the dramatics class the students get to know each other. rehearse for parts. and study historical backgrounds. Each member of the class volunteers to accept a responsibility. such as director. promp- ter. costume director. make-up man. interior deco- rator. stage-manager. or program director. lt is always very encouraging for the dramatics class to have its play presented in the assembly. for the class starts from nothing and in the end accomplishes and presentsya play that everyone enjoys. Central Commercial has a Journalism Class which is credited towards the English requirements. This class puts out the The Centralitef' the school newspaper. Central Commercial has a creative writing class. which puts out the Senior Year Book. Students work on layouts. pictures. and original drawings to illustrate the text. and learn to write creatively for a specific purpose. In the Biology laboratory. where experiments are performed. the pupils also witness the fascina- tion of seeing animal cells invisible to the naked eye through the aid of microscopes. This helps them envision the many wonders of life with which they

X to satisfy their needs. The purpose of these shops is to establish techniques in buying and selling. Girls taking the Dental Assistants Course work in the school dental ollice and receive excellent training in Dental Assisting. which they can apply to their future jobs. The students who take Business Machines learn the operations of these machines. and. as a result. are placed on a higher wage scale once they are out in the business world. Courses that would cost hundreds of dollars. if taken in a private busi- ness school. are available at Central as part of the specified commercial course of study. The pupils taking Business Project have an opportunity to learn how to operate the switch- board. lile properly. and are taught the many dif- ferent forms used in business. The Business Project course actually brings the oflice to the classroom by creating situations which could exist between vari- ous business lirms and their customers. The most emphasis is placed on the subjects chosen as majors. ln the Stenography class. the students feel as if they are taking dictation from their employers. The dictation is ollice style and the transcription is done in a manner acceptable in the business world. Right from the beginning we loved the way words could be symbolized on paper in one short stroke. We were fascinated by the way we were able to write down the letters that were dictated and to transcribe them correctly. l-.Y fs l wrsfff j M.

are quite often unacquainted. Our Social Studies classes have contributed to our becoming good American citizens: having taught us our rights and duties. helped us secure an awareness of the crises in the world. and how to economize. and to gain a higher standard of living. Central's library has provided a refuge for its students who wish to absorb and accumulate facts and also for those who want to read for pleasure. Our school. however. is not one where there is all work and no play. There are clubs such as the Social Studies Club. which engages in activities that are both extremely educational and absorbing. Catholic students may join the Newman Club which offers many social activities. A The Stenography Club helps to improve our speed in shorthand. The Visual Aids Squad has taught boys and girls how to operate the movie proiector. This squad has the responsibility of showing films at assemblies and in the Visual Aids Room. Students who have high marks and good per- sonality ratings are urged to apply for membership in the National Honor Society. The members attend lectures. meetings. and visit various places of inter- est. and are the pride and joy of the school. Assembly programs are presented throughout the school year. These programs consist of plays. discussions on current topics. and panel discussions. At times speakers are invited to address the assem- blies. and their talks are extremely interesting.
