We We e Here Situated on -12nd Street between Second and Third Avenues there stands a low red building with bold letters bearing the title ot' Central Commercial. Central is not just another school: within her walls the boys and girls are being trained so that they may be able to carry their training out into the business world with the knowledge and assurance they need to make them successful business men and women. Central's many detailed business courses. its many classrooms tilled with all types of strange and interesting-looking machines. the business-like atti- tude of the teachers and the pupils made us realize this more and more as the days passed. Many of us were very surprised to learn that we attended the largest commercial school in the country. and that it was the only high school with a dentist on the premises. Central olfers its students complete training in dental assistance and dental mechanics. At Central. while you are learning, you have the wonderful opportunity of getting actual experi- ence in the lield of your choice. The employment department places students in part-time jobs in their chosen tield. When the students are in their senior year. they are assigned to school ollices. such as the bookkeep- ing. stenography. academic. and attendance ollices for two-week training periods where they acquire a knowledge of business affairs. Students work in the school store and tloristry shop where they are given the opportunity to wait on customers. and thus learn

X to satisfy their needs. The purpose of these shops is to establish techniques in buying and selling. Girls taking the Dental Assistants Course work in the school dental ollice and receive excellent training in Dental Assisting. which they can apply to their future jobs. The students who take Business Machines learn the operations of these machines. and. as a result. are placed on a higher wage scale once they are out in the business world. Courses that would cost hundreds of dollars. if taken in a private busi- ness school. are available at Central as part of the specified commercial course of study. The pupils taking Business Project have an opportunity to learn how to operate the switch- board. lile properly. and are taught the many dif- ferent forms used in business. The Business Project course actually brings the oflice to the classroom by creating situations which could exist between vari- ous business lirms and their customers. The most emphasis is placed on the subjects chosen as majors. ln the Stenography class. the students feel as if they are taking dictation from their employers. The dictation is ollice style and the transcription is done in a manner acceptable in the business world. Right from the beginning we loved the way words could be symbolized on paper in one short stroke. We were fascinated by the way we were able to write down the letters that were dictated and to transcribe them correctly. l-.Y fs l wrsfff j M.
