18 Homecoming HOMECOMING: KING. Dave Ohlman. QUEEN, Shelley Richardson. This year homecoming was observed during the week of October 11-15, 1982. On Monday and Tuesday, classes started prepara- tions for the hall decorating competition; and the band, pep club, athletes, cheerleaders, and pom-pon girls voted for the 12 semifinalists for homecoming king and queen. On Wednesday, the student body voted for the 6 finalists, Thursday was the bonfire and pep rally at Pat- terson Field, and the announcement of the top 6 can- didates. Friday was the hall decorating contest, Pep Ral- ly at the City Hall parking lot, football game against 0rd, and the dance in the gym after the game. First attendants to the king and queen were Mary King, and Bill Fitzgerald. Second attendants were Carrie Holmstedt, and Dana Ruge. The Bison played a good game, but came up on the short end of the score against 0rd. The student council sponsored the dance with music by Complete Musict Homecoming: Bison vs, Ord. Exchange Student Arja Lappalainen came to Central City from Espo, Finland, a town near Helsinki. During her stay here, she liv- ed with the Richard Svitak family. Arja is seventeen years old. She lives in Finland with her mother, father, and two brothers. According to Arja, school in Finland is very different from school here. She almost always walks to school. In Finland, students go to high school for three years. She still has two years to complete because this year does not count. Arja's mother's name is Aili. She is a high school teacher of Finnish History; Arja's father, Unto is employed by the Finnish government. Her brother, Antii is twenty-one years old and in the service. He plans to study biology in college. Her other brother, Pekka is a seventeen year old student. Some of Arja,s hobbies are gymnastics, cycling, swimm. ing, reading, private gardening, playing tennis, and knit- ting. She enjoys a variety of winter sports such as skiing, and ice skating. Arja also plays the piano. Among her varie- ty of experiences, Arja has worked in an ice cream parlor. Besides speaking such languages as English, Finnish, Swedish, German, and French, Arja has visited a number of countries; including Sweden, Turkey, France, Greece, Spain, Norway, England, and the United States. In School, Arja especially enjoys languages and mathematics. Arja says she has enjoyed this country very much. Arja Lappalainen 17
