CLASS SPONSORS: Mr. Scott Malcolm, Mrs, Barbara Seoley, How Times Hove Changed By Patti Schonk At time marches on, we often pouse at certain inter- vals to glance back. We are proud of what we hove inherited from 1885 to the present, and we dedicate this portion of our annual to the post. The original high school was built in 1885 where the present elementary building is, with the first graduating class being in 1886. No extrocurriculor oc- tivities were offered at this time, and emphasis was placed on ancient languages and mathematics. The school colors were not always the current green and gold that we are fomilior with, but began 05 old rose and green. This combination was used until the lore 1930's, when the colors kelly green and white were introduced. in about 1965, the bond bought new uniforms that went to o dorker green and white, with 0 gold broid. Since then, the colors have evolved to gold being the more predominont color. School colors were not the only thing that separated the early Bison yeors from the present. The graduating class of 1886 contained only three students, compared to this year's senior class of 80 students. Only three high school grades were offered until 1898, when twelfth grade was added. Athletics began to take 0 big port in CCHS in 1908, centering on track, Girls participated in most events. In 1913, the first indoor sport, bosketboil, was added. Continued on Page 19

How Times Hove Chonged Continued The class of 1914 was the lost to graduate from the first high school. In the foil of that year, 0 new high school was completed, which is the present middle school. The year 1914 also marked the year of the first annual, The Somrock. At this time there was no gymnasium to block their view, 05 the students gozed across the street watching the new high school go up brick by brick. The first school newspaper, The Broodcoster, was published in 1929. Social activities received 0 boost when the first Junior-Senior Prom was initiated in 1934, sponsored by the junior closst Softball and tennis were new sports or this time to the class of 1934, World War II also had 0 great impact on the Central City schools. Several members of the faculty, 05 well 05 groduoting students, were inducted into the service. Closses were disrupted from time to time, because new teachers would hove to be found to replace those who had left for the service. The 1948 onnuol wos dedicoted to those who were serving in the war This annual was 0 difficult one to publish, because of o shortage of supplies, paper, and labor due to the wor. Not until the yeor 1947 did the familiar scene of the three present buildings of the downtown compus begin to develop, when the gymnosium wos con- structed. Before that, the cafeteria in the middle school was used 05 0 gym, and had 0 sunken floor which is now covered. Theotricol performances had been done on 0 stage against the west side of the building where the present library and study hell are n0wt The present high school was built in 1967-1968. The school had not been completed when the students started that fall, but was finished during that school yeor The Vietnam War ero had 0 terrific impact on the ot- titudes of students and adults alike. An overall change in mood swept society, with pressure from students and parents causing the school to change the dress code. In the year 1969, it was no longer required for girls to weor dresses to school, 05 people began to realize the practical ospects of jeans and ponts. As the 70's progressed, o greater emphasis and need was placed on vocational and career related facilities. In 1979, the high school was expanded to oc- commodote the freshmen, and meet these new needs The new addition, which included 0 media center, greotly enlorged shop oreos, 0nd odditionol classrooms, was completed in the winter of 1979. With almost 100 years having gone by, we, the class of 1982, are proud to hove contributed to the history of CCHS. We hope that each class of succeeding students will find it 05 rewarding on experience 05 we hove. With this, I would like to wish my fellow students the best of luck, and may we never forget our years or CCHS. 19
