meclm HZMUZHHZH cf: 1, Assessment of American education is today a matter of public concern. Debate on educational issues is not new in America. The current debate, how- ever, is animated by a new spirit of urgency due to an unprecedented forebod- . ing about the future and an unprecedented awareness of human potential for progress. Manis destiny appears to depend upon our acquisition and use of knowledge. Public concern is based upon a new sense of the relationship be- tween the quality of education and the future of America. E I V 2 Hi S '65 ; s O ; A h, r; c1 i N G Hikxilj- ,, 4 x E K P; , h i ---.. The best education is that which does most to enable each student to de- velop his abilities and to serve society. Education must therefore be appropri- ate to the needs ofeach pupil and to the needs ofsociety. Students are individu- als, student bodies are constantly renewed, and society is everchanging. It fol- lows then, that education must be dynamic and diverse. High quality in educa- tion implies never-ending adaptation and improvement. Thus the taproot of quality in a school is vigorous public commitment to education based on un- derstanding of what education can do and what good schools are like.
