The old walls will not be seen by Senior High School students anymore. There are many memories of fall- en plaster, slouch day, stuffed cubicles, and countless others that we wonk forget. The old clock in study hall that never ran right, the smell ofchem- istry experiments, and running through the halls on the last day ofschool, are things of the past but they are things we wonTt forget.

The current debate, how- ever, is animated by a new spirit of urgency due to an unprecedented forebod- . ing about the future and an unprecedented awareness of human potential for progress. Manis destiny appears to depend upon our acquisition and use of knowledge. Public concern is based upon a new sense of the relationship be- tween the quality of education and the future of America. Education must therefore be appropri- ate to the needs ofeach pupil and to the needs ofsociety. Students are individu- als, student bodies are constantly renewed, and society is everchanging. It fol- lows then, that education must be dynamic and diverse. High quality in educa- tion implies never-ending adaptation and improvement. Thus the taproot of quality in a school is vigorous public commitment to education based on un- derstanding of what education can do and what good schools are like.
