Our standard of living has become more complex; the day of the self-made man has narrowed. We know the professions and government have expanded as have other training fields. A few years ago only half the students who entered high school finished; today nearly all will graduate, but today the high school diploma is no longer adequate. Most job opportunities now specify the necessity of a col- lege degree. Most people never accumulate great wealth; how- ever, most can be left with a rich legacy of educa- tion, if so desired. Most of our unemployed today are those who have no profession or skill; training of some kind is mandatory. Because education is such an important key for successful living, students, par- ents, and grandparents should give it serious thought. The longer we wait to provide education with good surrounding conditions the longer the present high school students will have been penalized from the start. Students, be sure to develop fully every desire and ambition for education during your elementary and high school days. It will pay you great life div- idends. E. The student council now in its tenth year is an organization to promote better student- faculty re- lationships. The council is composed of representatives from each class. Meetings are held at specific times during the school day. This year the council has kept a suggestion box in the office to help an- swer students' or teachers' questions. As usual the council brought the Christmas spirit to CCHS by dec- orating the halls and study hall. The council gave a new ping-pong table to the school after they had made money from concessions at the ball games. Thanks once again for a job well done. ' A . 1; , 1 r, .7 l 1' 3 . The primary aim of the Central City Chapter of Future Farmers of America is to develop agricul- tural leadership, cooperation and citizenship. To become a member, a boy must be regularly enrolled in a vocational agricultural class. He may retain his active membership for three years after the first national convention following his graduation from high School or until he becomes 21 years of age, whichever time is greater. The local chapter operates through dues and other money-making projects. The boys participated in local, district, and state judging contests. Members attended the National Convention at Kansas City, Missouri, and the State and District Conventions. Jeanne Mattson was elected the Chapter Sweetheart. : I : f: 1!; h: fin x .r 2973:; g i: . m- l; .i Q d? , if; t' t t J Li u, 1 X f2 XX 9 N 1;? t'm'v . 33, ; QJ- 7 t t K L -;t 71A - 1 s JV Ln '3' t. j: . 1 I J 2 '; xi t 5 . The Class of '64 presented a play by a Nebraska playwright on the evening of November 16. This play was Romantic BX Request; the playwright was Ahlene Fitch of Elmwood, Nebraska. Tim Bond, as Reuben Field, was not romantic enough to please Sarah Hardy aackie Fleming. However, country rubes can also have their day; and Reuben's day conquered Sarah's for he demon- strated through the trickery of Harold Means marold Chaden and Dorothy Lee Uackie Kortumt that romance isn't everything. Reuben's grandmother, Gloria Rudolf, and four visitors at the motel, Jean Stevens Oudy P050, Dorothy Hickman Gan Mattsom, and Teddy and Billie Johnson tCazole Neustrom and Marilyn Smitm kept things lively throughout the show. As an added attraction Marcia Krug, Jan Hansen, Kathy Gregg, Linda Kucera, Karen Hanxe, and Jim Kohtz presented a one- act play, Aunt Beth Reacts. by Jean Casselman. Melvin E. Zichek, the director, spoke highly of both casts and productions. '0 e0 x1 '7 . r'ie l M E 1 h ,4 v 2 , ., w g 3 H' W: 4X .3 ti'v' . Three very different plays were presented April 19,1963. Fourteen, a one act play of literary value, The Wrong Babx. an old one act farce, and At the Sign of the Pewter Jug, a 3-act comedy of fun and pleasure, made up the program. Even a monologue of the period, The Cheerful Laundress, was thrown in for good measure. With this program the Class of '63 proved that drama of forty years ago can be just as interesting and as much fun as the modern material. Karol Kramer, Gerry Widman, Gloria Johnson, Judy Nitzel, Linda Chadwick, Larry Johannes, Duane Drummond, Ron Ferris, Bill Peterson, Joe Glynn, and Shannon Zichek made up the cast in the three act production while Becky Yocom, Merlene Good, Martha Willhoft, Carol Larson, Mary Stuart, Janet Long- sine, Janelle Erb, Diane Miller, Karen Hoback,And1'ea Knight, and LaVerna Suck acted in the one- act plays. Gail Larsen gave the monologue. A good crowd was delighted by the program. and this show was responsible for the senior gift to the school, a lovely walnut speaker's stand. The director, Mr. Zichek, had nice things to say about the class and the show, testifying to our success. 30 I a V d fgnd B. Schutz, J. Shelton, C. Fen- I -A .aam. 1w. K. Good, M. Held, Thorpe, M. It proved to be a wonderful day that will never be forgotten by most of the seniors. The first stop was at Wahoo for breakfast. The first tour the class took was of Boy's Town. The group then continued on into Omaha where they visited Kitty Clover Potato Chip Plant. The class was then a guest of Brandeis for lunch. The biggest part of the afternoon was spent at the Omaha Municipal Airport where there was a tour of the terminal building. Many of the students then received their first airplane ride and found it quite a thrill. Before enjoying a wonderful dinner at the Fireside, the group had some free time to spend shopping in town. The evening was spent at the Indian Hill Cinerama where The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm was playing. Following the Cinerama the group boarded the buses for home, stopping briefly in Wahoo for lunch. The buses arrived home about 2:00 a. m. Saturday morning after a very enjoyable trip.
