The Senior Class of 1963 Presents . . . The Vigil Central Catholic High School Canton, Ohio 2 Dedication The drama of four years is drawing to a close as we, the actors, the class of 1963, prepare for our final scenes. We look back on a long, successful run possible only because of our perseverance and devotion to our director, Christ the leader. In deepest gratitude, we dedicate this VIGIL to Him and ask that He lead us to many successful performances in the future. 3 As administrator, teacher, and confessor, Monsignor has taught us to appreciate our Catholic faith, our education, and has prepared us for the future, by helping us acquire grace. Brother E. Thomas, F.S.C. Boys' Principal Brother Thomas, principal of the boys’ division has been to us a con- stant reminder of the principles and ideals which we have been taught dur- ing our past four years at Central. The ideals he presented to us will be a guide in our future lives. Sister Mary Nicholas. II.H.M. Girls’ Principal Sister has been our friend as librarian and in our senior year as principal. Her exemplification of Marian qualities in each of us make her our model of Christian woman- liness. s ■ SHEILA GIBBONS COMET Editor Comet WILLIAM MOSES Student Council President Student Council Sodality PARMA JEAN STRADER Sodality Perfect EDWARD WALSH Sodality Prefect National Honor Society RICHARD KELTY National Honor Society President CHRISTINE BECKERT National Honor Society President SANDRA GULLING VIGIL Editor RICHARD BELDEN Business Manager VIGIL 7 HOSE MARIE D’AURELIO President Class Officers JOANNE GARAUX Vice-president LINDA CHADDOCK Secretary KATHRYN KORLESKI Treasurer The Class 10 Ronald Barickman 11 Samual Angott J Margaret Barbato John Bast Toni Bast Diane Razznli Joseph Baum Daniel Recherer Joseph Belden Back to school! It seemed as though we had just left to start our last summer vacation while in high school. Now, September was here again. It was the last time we would view the familiar main entrance of a first day of school. Many thoughts raced through many heads that day, ranging from “It’s good to be back’’ to “I’ll be glad when it’s all over.” These were busy days—full of work and fun. Senior joys and studies were somehow different from other years. There was a certain finality about it all Everyone agreed on one thing — it was good to be a senior. Elizabeth Belopotosky Michael Belopotosky To aid our spiritual growth, there would be retreat — the last one for many seniors — opportunities for daily Mass and the Sacra- ments, visits, conferences, holy hours, and then, the Senior day of recollection. Christ had many graces in store for us — we had but to ask for them. 12 This year would bring elections to school and class offices, dances, games, and parties. Then classes, homework, special assignments, and tests would remind us that we were in school to pursue intellectual goals. The main entrance at dismissal time! Teachers, office staff, salesmen — all but heroic students — stay clear of the field until the battle is won. They’re on the bus! All’s clear! ■ Patricia Beltz Kugene Benedetto Pauline Bennell Mary Jane Besancon Kathleen Blogna 13 Jim Kling, Penny Conley, Lorraine Dureska, Curt Wright, Ted Henry plan pages for the VIGIL. Mary Jane Bozzacco Daniel Braun Work on the VIGIL started early. Having pictures taken for the annual and, of course, for friends, was an important item this Sep- tember. There were hectic searches through at- tics, drawers, and scrapbooks for snapshots that could be used in the VIGIL. We were amazed to see how styles had changed in only four years. Thoughts went back to all that had hap- pened in those four years. From the first day we started at Central Catholic we were deter- mined to be one of its finest classes. To reach this goal we implored the help of Our Lord in Holy Mass on one of the opening days of school. To exhibit our talents, the freshmen boys put out a class paper called the “Green and White Highlights” which was a big hit with everyone. We proved our loyalty to the school by joining efforts with the rest of the students to make the car raffle a success. The winner of the trip to New York as first prize for the leading salesman was earned by freshman Phil Lazzers. 14 Eugene Bressi James Buchanan The officers of the class were Marty Mon- not. Sherry Skotnicky, Rosie Flanagan, Mary Ann Hollaway, Chuck Feicht, Bob Roden, Walt Hoffman, Jim Stockert, and Ron Barick- man. Sister Marianne and Brother Vincent provided us with helpful moderation for our novice but aspiring class. They helped us spon- sor our first and successful dance, the “Sum- mer Swirl.” Rose Marie D’Aurelio, Bill Moses, Carol Wetmore, and Jim Stockert received leader- ship awards at the scholarship awards assem- bly and Christine Beckert, Rosie Paumier, Richard Wetzel, and Louis Vitangeli were recognized for special scholarship achieve- ments. We were elated with the coming of sum- mer vacation, but realized that much was ex- pected of us in the remaining years at Central. We also knew that these years would be filled with good times and happiness. 15 Patricia Casali Roland Ontrone Kenneth Chapis l-iiis Cinrinat Mary Jane Clarke Steven Charles Kdward Cironi Dunna Clemens Sophomore year moderators, Sister Marjorie and Brother An- thony, with two officers from that year, Pat Walter and Jim Stockert Our freshman year was now history, and a new door opened before us. With great con- cern and deliberation, we, the “Sophomores of Sixty,’’ selected as our class officers Pat Walter, Dianne Berbari, Janyne Skidmore, Martha Monnot. Bill Matthews, Rich Noll, Jack Hayden, and Jim Stockert. 16 During that fun-filled year, we enjoyed numerous sports events, school activities, and dances. At our sophomore dance, entitled “Fall Frost,” leaves, pumpkins, and cornstalks magically transformed the boys gym to a moonlit countryside on a brisk fall night. Our sophomore year was saddened, how- ever. as two of our classmates, Marlene Tor- nero and John Weston, were called home to God. Hard at work on a reilly poster are Ken Chapis, Pete Kurylas, Jack Hayden, Bill Moses, and George Nicola. As the flames rose at night ral- lies. so rose our school spirit. We went off to the game with great excitement. James Coveli Carol Crum Sue Culp Slip ' Mary Jane Dastolfo 17 Mary Ann Crites Richard Crum Robert Dasco Cheryl Davenport Janet David Robert Demehak Kathy Demion Henry Dermer Marianne Dolwick Penny Conley, escorted by Paul Palumbo, was the sophomore attendant at the Football Frolic. Pat Lallv and Bob Roden represented our class at the Vocal Department Formal, while Rose Marie D’Aurelio and Bill Moses had these honors at the Military Ball. Others in the spotlight that year were majorettes Jane Kramer and Kris Kutz. Mary Ann Hollaway, Diane Bazzoli, Carolyn Davis, Joan Lieser, and Carol Rusinsky cheered our reserve team on to victory. Barbara Dottavio Donna Doll 18 Lorraine Dureska Steven Durkin What a season! Our spirited ral- lies inspired our team on to victory. David Ebcrhardt Lawrence Ebcrhardt Another two points! We were just reserves then, but we picked up many fine tips from our varsity team. % Sherry Kberhardt Theresa Eberhardt Elaine Eckstein Richard Edwards 19 Nancy Ehret Timothy' Fautsko Patrick Ferruccio Mister Touchdown goes over the goal line for another Central vic- tory. Each week during football sea- son the hall displayed another colorful poster to boost our school spirit. Here, the Crusader urges us to charitably “Bury Jackson.” Of course, we couldn't help but learn a little that year! Our minds were forever ex- panding with wisdom and knowledge. In biology and geometry we were busy disecting and bisecting respectively. Lois Cincinat received an award as the sophomore girl with the highest average, while Janice Karoglan maintained second place. Among the boys, Richard Noll received this scholastic award; and Richard Kelty placed second. Thus ended a hectic and happy year that we surely will never forget. As spring rolled around and our sophomore year drew to a close, we eagerly awaited the fall—when we would be upperclassmen. Barbara Fisher Margaret Fomirh l.aureUa (Gilbert Joanne Gardner 21 Itosemary Flanagan Sheila Foreman Clark Gasper Brian Gilhooly Margaret Glenn James Glutting Margaret Glutting Thomas Graham Karen Grassier Saundra Guist Junior Class officers Jo Marie Flocci, Alan Page, and Bill Matthews look through a scrap- book from that year. September brought us to the halls of Cen- tral once again, however, one major change had taken place. We were upperclassmen—at last. Determined to succeed, we chose Jo Marie Rocci, Sheila Foreman, Penny Conley, Kris Kutz. Herman Seiser, Dick Noll, Bill Mat- thews, Alan Page, and Jack Hayden to lead us through the year. Elected to the Student Council Advisory Board were Parma Jean Strader, Bill Moses, Diann Lombardi, and Paul Palumbo. Class moderators were Sister Dolores and Brother David. 22 Sandra Guzzetta Carol Halter Robert Halter Elizabeth Hambach Elaine Hamel Dana Hammen Joanne Hanke Sue Hankes Kenneth Hare Karen llarple Daniel Hines Thomas Hoch In the cheering section, Mary Ann Holla- way, Carolyn Davis, and Joan Leiser helped to lead them on to victory. Jane Kramer, Kris Kutz, and Donna Diamond added vitual life to the majorette line. This was the year that our football team chalked up a 10-1 record—the best ever! But, then, we had the best. John McVay, the most successful grid mentor in Central football his- tory. The basketball team held its own too. James Swierczek, new head basketball coach, spurred the team on to a 10-7 record for the season. We eagerly awaited the day we would re- ceive our class rings. The girls chose to revive the tradition of rectangular rings and the boys continued the custom of large oval rings with a green set. The rings were presented at a liturgical ring blessing ceremony which was a “first” at Central. I.awrence Hoffman Mark Hoffman Paula Hoffman Mary Ann Hollaway James Hopple 24 For the annual Football Frolic”, we chose Sherry Skotnicky and Paul Palumbo as our representa- tives. This year we saw the arrival of Brother Thomas, new principal of the boys’ division, but we also lost two wonderful friends. At the semester, John McVay, head football and athletic coach, was called to an assistant coaching job at Michigan State University. The “McVay Memorial Trophy,” to be given to the outstanding athlete each year, was establish- ed in his honor. Mr. Joseph Eaglowski was named new head football coach. Sister Mary of the Angels, Principal of the girls’ division, after six years of excellent guidance and lead- ership to the girls’ of Central, was transferred. Barbara Hose Franeine llufler ) -k Mary l.ou Jogerst 25 Jill Hribar Rita Hutcheson Thomas Jacobson riaudia Jones Janice Karoglan to Nancy Kelly John Keely William Kelly Thomas Kehner John Kennedy Lawrence Kelly Karen Kieffer The year was rapidly drawing to a close, and we found ourselves working with enthusi- asm and energy. There was so much to get accomplished and so little time to do it. Having the highest averages, Lois Cincinat, Dorothy Boerner, Bob Halter, and John War- ner led the class scholastically. Herman Seiser. Richard Kelty, and Jane Kramer were our delegates to Boys’ State and Girls’ State. Jan- ice Karoglan, Chris Beckert, George Nicola, and Bill Moses won the Leadership Awards. With the cooperation of the class and its officers, the Junior dance, “Evening in Paris,” proved to be a delightful experience for everyone. Junior-Senior Class Night carried the theme — “Past. Present and Future.” Lastly, “Colonial Cotillion.” the Junior-Senior Prom, added just the perfect ending to just a perfect year. Then it was over. We suddenly found ourselves scanning the future (three months hence) with a hope and expectation we had never before experienced. Marcia Kinney Joan Klekotka 26 And then there was our senior year! Four years ago our senior year seemed to be an eternity away But now that it was upon us and we looked back at our Freshman year, it seemed that it was only last year, not three years ago that, we entered CCHS. With the acceptance of our new title “senior,” we had to realize the fact that this was our last chance to make successful and worthwhile time of our years at Central. As the months went by and Prom time neared, it was only a matter of sliding into home plate before that long-awaited day came—Gradua- tion Day, 1963. Looking back on it all we can all say that everyone had their share of work and enjoy- ment during the years spent at Central To- gether with the wonderful acquaintances we- ’ve made and the great times we’ve had, how could we ever forget our days at Central Catholic High School. The leaders we chose for our senior year were: Rosie D’Aurelio, Joanne Garaux, Linda Chaddock, Kathy Korleski. and Dick Noll, Bill Matthews, Jack Hayden. Jim Stockert. and John Ertle. Our senior cheerleaders were Diane Bazzoli, Betty Hambach, and co-captains Mary Ann Hollaway and Carolyn Davis.
