c £)e(lica lion In our attempts to become Catholic leaders in the world, we found the' perfect model and inspiration, Christ, the Leader. Central Catholic High School provided numerous opportun- ities for us to progress in our development of a truly Christ- like character. With deep gratitude and sup- plication for guidance in our future years, we respectfully dedicate this VIGIL to Christ, Our Eternal Leader. From Canton, Massillon, North Canton, Alliance, Louisville, Navarre, Harrisburg and Maximo we arrived, three hun- dred eighty-five strong, eager to begin our long-awaited senior year at Central Catholic High School. Nancy Jo Baum Robert Beckwith Francis Bell Connie Bellinski Charles Besselman 8 When school opened, we found a bigger and better Central with a record enrollment of 1,648 stu- dents, and an addition of three new classrooms to the school build- ing. Things had really changed since that morning in 1957 when we entered Central as freshmen . .. Joe Lamielle and Rick Juenemann begin their year on the right foot as they hit the books.” Louise Blubaugh Donald Bonk Paul Bonnot Patricia Blandford Joseph Blend David Blubaugh Mary Bordner Daniel Brannen James Brelish Linda Bressi Marilyn Briceland Richard Conley 10 Carol Brown David Brown Dianne Brown As our first year progressed, we met the faculty, visited the library, bought” dozens of library passes, and looked with awe upon the legendary iron curtain.” After school, we were introduced to co-curricular activities. They were presented to us by eager recruiters in a highly glamorized fashion, and we joined them all, from the band right down to the newly-organized science club. We probably would have continued in this disorganized state forever, if it hadn’t been for our class moderators, Brother Vincent and Miss Paumier. Under their guidance, we elected officers Judy Roska, Judy Lamiell, Carol Birch, Kathy Doll, Doug Childress, Rick Chapis, Bill Sheaffer, and Ed Ojdana, and constructed a huge snowman for our first dance, The Jack Frost Frolic. ’ 1957 also saw the arrival of Coach John McVay at Central . . . ouz freshman football team completed a successful season under captain, Rick Chapis . . . attendants to the football king and queen were Pat Miglich and Ron Hoover. Serving as freshmen cheerleaders were Judy Farwick, Joyce Helline, Mary Miglich, Pat Miglich, and Judy Roska. Judith Bucey William Buck Elizabeth Buckler Mary Buell Michael Burkhart Patricia Bury 11 John B.vham Barbara Obula Gregory Byrer Mary Carioti Richard Catazaro Our sophomore year was marked by the arrival of a new administrator, Father Fannon. His guidance, ex- ample and wonderful sense of humor have been an inspir- ation to us. In him we have found a teacher, an adviser and a really true friend. Louise Blubaugh, Rosemary Dougherty, Rose Feicht and Jo Ellen Eberhart enjoy one of Father Fannon’s iokes. Francis Centrone Richard Chapis Thomas Chevreaux Frank Childress Robert Chme! Claranne Cicarelli Terrence Clark Mary Cleaver Judith Clemens Because of her sincere in- terest in us and her fine ex- ample as a Religious, we feel privileged to have had Sister Mary of the Angels as our principal for the last four years. Brother William, principal of the boys’ division, has always been to us the personi- fication of the high Christian ideals we have learned in school. Patrick Conlon Barbara Craddock 13 Robert D’Aurelio Ann Davidson David Deal After a week of hectic campaigning, Helen Ann Raley, Toni Pucci, Mary Jo Shane, Linda Bressi, Doug Childress, Dick Tondra, Bill Shacffcr, and Ed Ojdana were elected to lead the Sophomore Class. With the help of co- moderators Brother Leo and Sister Marjorie, they produced the successful sophomore dance, a colorful Holiday in Holland.” Central pulled the football surprise of the year by upsetting Warren Harding, 8-0. The team was welcomed home by a wildly cheering student body at a special victory rally. Sophomore cheerleaders Mary Bordner, Joyce Helline, Judy Farwick, Mickey Lombardi, and Judy Roska added to the spirit of the season. Attendants to the football king and queen were Georgia Cox and Sophomore Varsity Star Ron Hoover. The F.B.L.A. and G.A.A. were formed . . . Kay Donecker was selected Miss Uniform” by her class . . . Marie Bardaro highlighted the majorette line. The Class of ’61 was preparing for their future of leadership . . . Donald Denenzio Theresa Deutschman Kathryn DiCola Patricia DK'ola Michael DiPietro Kathleen Doll Making its debut in our sophomore year was the Home and School Associa- tion, founded for better parent-teacher understand- ing. Through six-weeks’ meetings and conferences, our parents began to learn more about Central, and our teachers, more about our home background. Kay Doneeker Donna Donohoue Rosemary Dottavio Robert Domenick Robert Domenico Barbara Domonkos I Rosemary Dougherty 15 Ann Dressier Barbara Eckroate Joseph Durkin Anthony Eaver Jo Ellen Eberhart Under the moderation of Sister Campion and Brother Robert, the Sodality of Our Lady strives to fulfill its three- fold purpose of sanctification of self, of neighbor and the de- fense of the Church. Of this society, over half are members of the Class of 1961. Encouraging the observance of Advent throughout the school, senior Sodalists Mickey Lombardi and Gretchen Schrader help construct the O Antiphons” in the main hall. Carolyn Edwards Thomas Egan Donald Elseser Thomas Ertle David Evans Mary Ann Evans Judy Farwick Rose Ann Feicht Central seemed the same but we were different. We were upperclassmen—finally. We elected Toni Pucci, Sandy Gill, Teri Dcutschman and Carol Birch to lead the girls’ division and Doug Childress, Bill Sheaffer, Bob Kress, and Julian Fasano were the boys’ officers. Cheerleaders Judy Roska, Pat Miglich, Mickey Lombardi and Joyce Hellinc added that spark” to athletic events. Majorettes were Rose Marie Bardaro, Dianne Brown, and Diane De Mont. Rick Chapis and Connie Frank were junior attendants at the Football Frolic. The junior dance, The Black Magic Bop,” caused quite a stir and frightened many unsuspecting underclassmen. Becky Matheson, Mary Ann Spangler, Dick Tondra, and Helen Ann Raley qualified in the Ohio State Speech Tournament. Helen Ann captured fourth place in the state girls’ extemporaneous tournament. We were juniors. But as the year ended and we planned for Junior- Senior Class night, the realization of our own graduation came upon us. The 1960 VIGIL reminded us that in three months we would begin our senior year. m Sandra Floom Mary Jane Fomich Joseph France Lynn Fisher Constance Frank Cynthia Franz Linda Franz Patrick Gallagher Michael Gamble Roberta Gang The Central dance band swings out with another of its favorite arrangements, Joshua’s Jump.” The group comprises a small part of Central’s 90-member band, which includes the concert, marching and dance bands, combined under the di- rection of Mr. James M. Lucas. The senior officers of this year’s band included Bob Hook, president; Dianne Brown, vice- president; and Tom Sweterlitch, treasurer. Rose Gang Evelyn Ginther Jerry Goebel Marilyn Gore Michael Granchi Terrence Graybill Lillian Greene Edward Gretchko Members of the Girls’ Ensemble perform in the Christmas choral concert, Holiday in Song,” one of the two annual vocal department concerts. Richard Blaumeiser also directs the entire vocal de- partment, which consists of a 150-member Girls Glee Club, the Advanced Chorus, a mixed group of fifty voices, and a Voice Class. Officers of the Advanced Chorus this year were Bob Hook, Judy Roska, and June Schneider. Susan Grigez Fred Groenke 19 Carol Gulling Alice Halter Cynthia Halter Patrick Halter Mark Hatheway Dennis Hazel At last it had arrived. Senior year! Oh, the wonder of it all! We prided ourselves on our calm maturity and condescendingly eyed panic-stricken freshmen and those childish oddities — sophomores and juniors! After the first few weeks, we settled down into the routine of being a special” class Under the direction of Sister M. Colombiere, (lower right) and Brother Arnold, F.S.C., (upper), class mod- erators, we got used to our very own Vocation Holy Hours and every- thing became a last.” We spoke of our last” football rally, our last” retreat, our last” game. There were also a lot of firsts” during our senior year. Father John Cassidy (upper) came to Central as our first full-time spiritual director. It was the first year, too, for Sister Mary Aquinas (lower left) as Assistant Principal of the Girls' Division and debate moderator. With Dick Tondra (lower left) and Mary Spangler, Gavel Society officers, Sister and co-moderator Brother Lawrence coached the debaters and speakers to excellent city sweepstake championships and a notable col- lection of trophies. Joyce HeHine Ann Henrich Robert Henze John Henzel 20 Kenneth Hoover Ronald Hoover John Hopple Roy Hosier Rita Humphreys Richard Howard Suzanne Huddleston Mary Elise Huet The majorettes were capably headed by Dianne Brown and included Rose Marie Bardaro. Senior cheerleaders headed by Mickey Lombardi also included Pat Miglich, Connie Frank and Judy Roska. Mr. James Lucas, as the new band director, introduced the first winter band concert. Suzy Alvarez became Homemaker of the Year” and Robert De- Marco served as president of Canton Junior Achievement. Norm Nicola won a thrilling first as the only Ccntralite to merit an All-American berth. Cadet teaching programs, job applications became the order of the day. Interest in scholarships and colleges was one more reminder that a way of life was ending and a new one about to begin. To help us plan for this new life many co-curricular activities focused on the future. Senior Future Teachers, Carol Jenkins and Nancy Kcstcl (upper) and senior Future Nurses Claranne Cicarelli, Mary Jo Shane and Mary Bordner learned the needs and qualifications of their professions. The Future Business Club (middle) traveled to many industries to learn bus- iness procedures. Richard Juenemann Paul Juhasz Mitchell Karam Carol Keim 23 The National Honor Society made col- lege and scholarship information avail- able to interested seniors, such as mem- bers Lillian Greene, Gregory Byrer, Becky Matheson, Rick Chapis, Norm Nicola and Dick Tondra. This is one of the ways in which the N.H.S. fulfills its purpose — the fostering of character, scholarship, leadership and service. Judith Kleinhenz At Central, many energetic students developed these qualities by work- ing on school pub- lications. COMET staff members were Judy Lamiell, Jill Whelan, Pat Bland- ford, Peggy Adams and Sue Kling. 24 Chris Rossetti, Sue Roth, Mar- jorie Marshall, and Muncie Ughy. Joseph Lameille Robert Lane LoraLee LaPanta Michael Larkin John Lazar 25 Eileen Leahy Robert Long Mary Kay Loudiana Nathaniel I eggett William Lieser Michele Lombardi Since 1957, when Coach John McVay and the Class of '61 were freshmen,” the growth of Central Catholic’s football skill has become a legend among the fans. Our Crusaders have maintained a memorable 9—1 record for two consecutive years and earned berths on city, coun- ty, state and national teams. 26 Daniel McCarel Marilyn McCarty William McCarty We will never forget the terrific spirit shown at the basketball games and rallies. Mr. Hanlon, our energetic coach, spurred our boys on to a 10—7 record. I awrence Malcuit Fred McDonald Molly Maguire Edward Mahoney Maureen Marchand 27 Michael Mascioli Football and basketball rallies were highlighted with skits by the cheerleaders, majorettes, the senior girls, and by poster contests among the home rooms. Rebecca Matheson Richard Mertes James Meyer Mary Miglich Patricia Miglich The Christmas assembly with its hymns and carols featured the Vocal department, band, language classes and of course Mr. and Mrs. Clause with surprises for Mary Miglich and Mike Wilder! Carolyn Miller Cynthia Miller Susan Mohr Edward Monter Mary Ann Monter James Moser JuJia Munley Evelyn Ginther and Jerry Uber agreed that the great- est fun of our school dances was the planning and decor- ating. We learned the value and the art of working to- gether on every school proj- ect. Kenneth Murray Rosemary Muzi Rosemary Myers Rita Nelson 30 Norman Nicola Paul Nieschwitz Marcella Ofner John O'Hara James Pfister Douglas Pedrotty Georgia Pope Richard Pratt Nancy Pedrotty Nancy Perretta Music, flowers and soft lights set the perfect scene when Linda Bressi and Rick Chapis reigned as our Queen and King at the annual Football Frolic. Highlighting the evening, Rick crowned Linda queen, as her little cousin Rebecca Pippi, crown bearer, gazed starry-eyed at the impressive ceremony. Maria Elena Pucci Michael Quilligan Elaine Rashid John Razel Robert Redleski Constance Reichenbach John Reiman Maria Raymondi As you can see. Norm Nicola can recover other things besides a football. Here he is in the act of catching Jill Whelan a mom- ent after she stumbled on the golden stairs. This com- ical little incident happened minutes before the queen, Linda Bressi, descended the stairs and was met by her escort Rick Chapis. Donna Rex Raeanne Rex 33 Karen Richards Robin Ritz Gloria Robinson Gerald Roman Joan Ronske Judith Roska Christine Rossetti Susarf Roth RaShelle Rothermel The Senior Class play, Sir James Barrie’s Quality Street,” was one of the highlights of our senior year. Rehearsals and Bob Meister got a shot in the arm by senior starlets (left to right) Ann Henrich, Rosemarie Bardaro, Judy Roska and Sandy Gill, to insure a hit production (upper). We sat enthralled as Bob Ritz, Kay Donecker, and Linda Lung portrayed the leading roles of Captain Valentine Brown (lower right), Phoebe Throssel, and her sister Susan (lower left). Although we were disappointed in the opening scenes, when the dashing captain did not propose to Phoebe, we were later aghast, as were the town’s eminent spinsters, Mary Willoughby (Donna Donohoue), Fanny Willoughby (Rose Feicht) and Henrietta Turnbull (Diana Wadian), when Phoebe became the village coquette (lower right) and spurned Valentine’s professed love. Richard Ruflin Mary Russo Henry Rutland Richard Sabo Carl Sanislo 34 June Schneider Frederick Schoeppner Leonard Schoeppner Walter Schoeppner 35 Patricia Schorsten Christine Schott Gretchen Schrader Robert Schwartz Suitors Ensign Blades (Bill Sheaffer) and Lt. Spicer (Ed Mahoney) become deeply infatuated with Phoebe, disguised as her niece” Livy at the ball. After a charm- ing waltz, led by Rose Marie Bardaro and Bob Meister, Livy learned of Captain Brown’s true love for Phoebe. Marilyn Seifert Rosann Seifert Our fears that Pheobe could never be rid of Livy” were at last banished and we all sighed with content- ment. Phoebe accepted Valentine’s too flattering” an offer of marriage and all lived happily ever after. The efforts of our smiling cast were rewarded by an enthusiastic audience and wonderful theatre memories for all of us. Mary Jo Shane Rebecca Shannon Mary Ann Sharkey Maurita Sharp 36 Paul Snopel Dennis Snyder Patricia Snyder Mary Ann Spangler 37 William Suttle Thomas Sweterlitsch Thomas Tecec Richard Teolis 38 We began to take lasTT a the old familiar placcP which have been so much a part of our years at Central. The victory bell that often counted out the score of another Cru- sader triumph, the statue of the Sacred Heart at the entrance to our campus, the tower which has been our landmark, the beautiful rolling campus. We’d miss the surprise fire drills that caught us right in the middle of a test, the fun of working together on dances, the senior holy hours, the high-spirited ral- lies, quiet visits to the chapel, all of which reminded us that high school moments of wild cheering, hectic studying, carefree fun, and quiet prayer were slowly slipping away. Giannina Toffolo Dolores Toolan Joanne Tornero Thomas Tuersley Jerald Uber Margaret Ughy 39 40 Jerome YVadian Ronald Waechter Pamela Walter Daniel Waltz wV May rushed by in a flurry of year-end events. Much as we tried to slow everything down. Senior Day, May 3, reminded us that we would soon assume important obligations. Our Prom, Song of the Islands,” was on May 5, and on May 14, May Queen, Carol Birch, and her attend- ants, Sandy Gill, Judy Roska, Connie Frank and Jill Whelan crowned Our Lady. Junior-Senior Class night, May 26, and even the last of those horrible exams were over before we knew. Our Baccalaureate, June 2, at St. Joseph Church was the beginning of the end. Finally that Day of Days” for which we had been preparing these four years was here — Graduation! With the blessing of Bishop Walsh, the Class of 1961 leaves Central Catholic High School well prepared for great accomplishments in the adult world, inspired by our teachers, the Sisters of the Holy Humility of Mary, the Brothers of Christian Schools, the priests who taught us, and our lay faculty. Their example of unselfish dedication will remain with us forever as a criterion for our lives as good Catholic men and women.
