We produced plays and gor- geous musical revues on the well-equipped stage of our own expansive auditorium. We delighted in the latest books of our new complete library, and our eyes widened at the vast findings in fascinating experimental laboratories. Our minds and our hearts opened-we knew peace in the quiet of a simple chapel. We could but dream as each Fall gave way to Winter and each Spring quickened our spirits again, 'til now, at last, all of our dreams are becoming actual plans-not for ourselves, but for those we leave behind and for whole generations of Catholic youth. l-lence, we, the Seniors of l945, gratefully dedicate this review of the seasons of our final high school year to the thou- sands of men and women who are making our dreams come true. 756 740106145 of CEHTHHl CHTHUUC HIGH SUHUUL Soul! Another football season in the short history of Cen- tral Catholic athletics faded away with the smoke from the official time-keeper's gun at the South Bend Catholic contest. The athletic careers of many Seniors were brought to an abrupt halt with the crack of that six shooter. Some, of course, will go on to conquer larger fields of competitive sports: but for the most part our departing grads will never again thrill to the thundering roar of the grandstands voicing their ap- preciation of a, bone-crushing tackle or a phantom- like end sweep which results in a game-winning touchdown. Rather, a game-tying touchdown: be- cause there was no such thing as a game-winning touchdown for the team of 945. Seven times our battle-weary Indians donned the war paint to clash with the foe on the field of friendly strife. Seven times our Redmen felt the sting of de- feat. They'll joke about our perfect record and tough ones to lose, but down in the hearts of those intrepid athletes who played the game Saturday after Saturday, within the boys who took the bumps and came back fighting, lies the knowledge that what they did was not in vain. They knew they had de- fended the most cherished tradition in C. C. Ath- letics. Never has a Central Catholic team lain down on the job. From the opening seconds with Hammond High right down to the last minute of the South Bend Catholic game our boys played right up to the hilt for the glory of the school. Immediately, these tellows set to work planning the layout ot the annual: and unanimously, they agreed that the tirst acknowledgment they should malce would be an expression ot the sincere gratitude ot the entire student body to all ot the generous triends who have done so much to improve athletics at Central Catholic this year. As the seasons have gone forward, the ever-taithtul Patrons' Club, this year under the presidency ot Mrs. John Toth, has whole- heartedly supported this movement by holding several ot their monthly social hours tor the benetit ot the athletic department. A large part ot the success ot the activities otany school is due to the baclcing which it receives trom its triends. Central Catholic is most tortunate in having so large a number ot enthus- iastic true friends. X 5 O C I A L M. ,sa .dm .,,,,,, 2 ,X 4 'P 9 Q' n 3 - 4 4 L' fl' ,X Lv S 5 v W N .SL A Q 1? Nevertheless, after much sweaty and tears here we go with somel astonishing facts. The final results show the Seniors and Sophs tied for over-all honors with 27M ofl the total honors each. The Jun- iaors ran a close third with 264M,. The Frosh. ending up in last place, did themselves up respectfully with 20'M,. When we get specific it can be, seen that the Seniors are in fori All or Nothing at All! Thats right-of their total of 125 honor 1 points, they earned 75 of them on, the High Honors. On the other! hand, the Sophs messed with Mr.l In-between! since they got their 125 points from the Honors brac-X ket. Not one Soph placed on thel High Honors. The Juniors spread, out their egorfs and garnered 120 Doints from all three Rolls. The Frosh. true to form. started out slow but gained speed as the year progressed. They ended up with 105 points, most of which were gained on the Honors or else on the Honorable Mention. A box score reveals the follow- ing: Total H.H. BUNNY HOP EASTER MONDAY Sludenls Respond To An Appeal On the occasion of the regular First Friday devotions for Feb- ruary 2, we were honored to have Father James MacCauley C.S.C. to offer Benediction and give us a talk. Having spent eight years as a missionary in Bengal, India, Father MacCauley is familiar with native customs and problems, as well as the work which the priests and Brothers are doing. He gave us a vivid picture of the diiiiiculties which are encountered there, especially in these war times, when dangers are multiplied. At the particular mission where Father MacCauley was in charge, there were 40 native boys in the Apostolic School in addition to 20 more in the Little Seminary. The problems of the missionary are many, and one of those prob- lems confronting our particular missionary was ably and willingly' SLEEPY MILLER BAND SHAPING UP S0 DUES THE BAND 'AND GLEE GLUE! A .sellout crowd of approximately 1,200 persons saw the play. Last November, Brother Jareth, Dramatics Director at Central Catholic, began hauling out books of rlavs and stage tcchnicalities. FQST' Brea K TUVS in Basketball Summary. After a slow start. while the starting five were be- coming accustomed to each other, Central Catholic presented a well-balanced ball club by tournament time. Given more time to function, there is no doubt that our 44-45 basketball team would have set an en- viable record. Brother Cyril took over the team shortly prior to :he opening game. Sacrilicing the first few encounters 'or the sake of teaching the boys teamwork, Brother Jroved the value of this lesson by the results he achie- red in the latter part of the season. The final record of eight won and ten lost does not ell the story of the potentialities of the 44-45 team. But, the steady improvement of the team justifies the onviction that the boys really had the ability to play Scoring for the season was as follows: hfdef -.------............ 171 Bafany ---.-.- --.--'- 18 VICManus ............ 89 costin ,,,,, .-.-,.- 1 7 7055 ------------ ----.. 7 9 Fobe ,,,, ,.., 5 auetz ------- ------ 7 7 Collins 3 flackey ....... ...,., 3 2 White ,-.'- 1 frowe ........ .,,,,, 2 8 --.- P'Keefe ...... ...... 2 3 Total ---- .....,543 a smooth, high-class type of ball. That they did come into their own can be clearly seen in a comparison of the scores of the three games with South Bend Cath- olic. Early in the campaign the Lions took us into camp comparatively without effort, 28-24. In the lat- ter part of the season we defeated the Lions twice and took the City Catholic Championship by the margin of 36-25. Central Catholic advanced into the semi-final round of the South Bend Sectionals. Washington High, who thus advanced into the finals, defeated us by a small lead. Ejection of key players spoiled the crowd's opportunity to witness an exciting, high-scor- ing game. NX 'XIJJ .I 4X - It Q f G Wx 1 f Sfeineu' Solos ST -5-oe. March fifteenth was the day set apart from all the busy months of study at Central Catholic this year. That-day was entirely devoted to reflection upon the all-important side of all of the things, all of the seasons of our year have brought for us. It is true that every day in one way or other the end of true education is held up before us, but it is of utmost value to every student to consider at periodic inter- vals that house built upon the sand. By means of many illustrations and interesting stories, Father J. Wilson, C.S.C., this year's retreat master, brought us back to an appreciation of the true relative worth of our bodies, minds, and souls. Such an appreciation, we realize, is the aim of true education-the kind that has been.given to us through all of the changing seasons of our years at Central Catholic: and we value the yearly retreat as a mo- ment in which to, get back to rock foundations. O what a glory doth this world put on For him who, with a fervent heart, goes forth Under the bright and glorious sky, and looks On duties well performed, and days well spent! -Longfellow We Have Done QUT Best . . .
