Fl ' ' ' 'r MAA ---L A s- V. . ..: .r .rc .- . , - --A .,..- V. V-, CLASS HISTORY By Walter Weisbecker FRESHMAN YEAR The group of us that had assembled as Freshmen on the Hrst day of Central in 1946, the second year of the Atomic Age, were alternately happy for themselves and sorry for their former parish classmates who were not there. The grim war years had passed and we corresponded in every way to the classes of the first post' war period that lived in the roaring twenties. Were we to live the roaring Hfties? The eternity of four years separated us from that answer. The shock of the first day, week, month, wore off and finally we took shape under' the clear, speaking leadership of the student council president, class of '49, We watched the splendor of the Minstrel, the Sunny South Minstrel and Radio Show, a satire on radio mixed with the charm of the South, roll by with only a few from our own group participating. Perhaps, too, the cheering we gave was not the loudest, but it was growing. This, I believe, was characteristic of the class, which was growing in stature, character, and personality, although Bro. George Thomas, then Vice'Principal, had to keep some of the more unruly in their places. That first year we were untamed, We did not yet realize the importance of settling down and working. The turnout of Central freshmen that year for the foot' ball team was small, for it is rugged for the freshmen against bigger competition, but such players as Ray Wrabley, jack Buechel, and Bill Huber had even then developed a faculty for making the coaches look twice! Finally came the North game, and we went all out for the winning score. Remember the parade back to school with the torches? Who were the men with the torches? That's what the faculty wanted to know The senior play Three Men on a Horse showed us what the fourth year was like The Brothers said we would be respected as seniors and in our eyes they were the elite of the school Truly we hold the honors of the classes of Central for being present for the Centennial of the Christian Brothers and also for the first operetta ever produced at Central This came under the name of My Maryland with Jim McAleer and Marilyn McCabe singing such unforgettable songs as Your Land and My Land and Silver Moon which even now bring back memories of the resounding rafters After this presentation the stage crew went into a well deserved rest period This group working under Brother Francls of Assissi did beautuur jobs on the sets and multicolored backgrounds of the Minstrel Senior Play and operetta Basketball was more or less ignored that year although Mr Standish encour aged the most shy Perhaps the boys foresaw that in the distant future a new style of play would rocket Central to fame This developed out of the schools program of never ending advancemert in sports As the routine of school went on we came to know the Brothers better and recelved another education that could not come out of any book We joked with such ageless Brothers as Francis Patr1ck surely everyone remembers some of Casey at the Bat Brother Emery whose talks on religious life and sports are common knowledge Brother Matthew with his stories that inspired us Do you also remember the roar of laughter that followed Brother Lucians remark Hugo to the Board There were heartbreaks in the first year but we underwent experiences that were insurpassable It wasn t a vicarious thrill we were really living it 1 sv. an 9 I ' x 1 1 - u. ws - - - 7 . . . u. as ' . ss - ws - - - ' s - 9 . . . . . . . .,- ' . During the early part of the year, the student hody was present in St, Pauls Ca' thedral for their annual retreat, As the year advanced, the name nf the school was heard in such places as Fnrhes Field, and Pitt Stadium. The annual midfwinter dance and the Senior Prom were held at the Schenley Hotel. xx' The main center of activity and excitement, is Cc-ntral's auditorium. Here is where all the students gather periodic- ally for their well planned pep rallies and assemblies to cheer the Vikings on. The writhing. squirming, wrigglfng mass of humanity. which filled this Central corridor a few minutes ago. has departed. and it now rests and regains strength to support the avalanche when it returns on the morrow. ms. wa. i Ad Majorem Gloriam Dei . . . a motto that is the only rule of life as far as Central Catholic High School is concerned. Classes. sports. Club activities . . . all to the greater glory of God. A tradition as old as Central Catholic itself. is the Mass of the Holy Ghost at St. Pauls Cathedral. opening each school year, and offered for the success of our school worlc in the following months. Housed between its giant pillars men of science strive to bring about those great improve- ments born of modern research. Pittsburgh will not lag behind in the race for more pro- gressive cities, but will rather carry the baton of prosper- ity on to its goal of being the most heautiful and efficient metropolis of the nation. TE CHI G During that allfimportant period of life, high school, youth is faced with the problem of crossing the gap between boyhood and manhood-fphysically, mentally, and spiritually. Central Catholic constitutes the best bridge for the crossing. It carries us readily over each section of this span. The Christian Brothers are the mainstays of this bridge through their selffappointed task of providing the special support and guidance which we need By following the dictates laid down hy their founder, Saint john Baptist de La Salle, these molders of the entire man, consecrate their lives to God's service, helping their students to know, love and serve Him, Humble, but firm in his convictions, patient and selffsacrificing, yet inspiring in his leadership, the Christian Brother has been an indispensable guide in our progress to God. N K I 17 THE FRESH E The school year of 1949 opened in September with the customary group of freshmen, commenc' ing their studies at Central. Because this is their hrst year at Central, the freshmen are somewhat perplexed at the regular routine of things and new studies to master' -such as algebra and Latin It does not take long to acquire the various habits and trends of the upperclassmen that are now practiced hy these freshmen through the ohservance of traditional rules. Miss Mary Jane Beggy, the school librarian, instructs a group of freshmen in the care and dating of books. Miss Bc-ggy's guidance has aided many students with their literary problems! The freshmen class and their English instructor, Brother Fidelis Andrew, run through a few important points of grammar and English idiom. Two doubtful freshmen attempt to locate European capi- tals while Brother Philip and the rest of the class look on with skeptical eyes. The 1950 Frosh are sure to learn their algebra under the careful supervision of Brother Donation, Central's ex- change Brother from the Province of Quebec, Canada. During the course of this year, a student must select the field for which he is best equipped. A junior is offered a selection of three courses: Arts, Sciences, and the Commercial course, Care' ful thought and consideration must be given before choosing the course which will be the basis for his future occupation. Brother E. James explains to this junior class, the correct procedure in solving this perplexing chemistry problem. Chemistry, as the juniors will agree, is not an easy subject. Brother G. Thomas and three mem- bers of this junior class give this very beautiful Christmas display a close in- spection. Many of the Brothers arc known for their outstanding displays at Christmas and during May. Brother E. Thomas, History instructor, tests this junior class on last night's homework. Brother Thomas was among the group of Brothers that opened the doors of Central to Pitts- burgh's Catholic youth. The best way to start the day is exem- plified by Brother Vincent's Junior class, as they recite the morning pray- ers. A boy's spiritual as well as mental powers are developed at Central. They played their second year on the squad as seniors. Their first year was also one in which they saw considerable action on the fairways. Rose Marie, Central's '49 operetta proved a great hit with all those who had the good fortune to see it. The acting, the scenery and the costumes were comparable with those of a Broadway production. The most predominant was T.H.I.F., that is Thank Heavens it's Friday. This was usually put forth by the instructor. The retort of the unifled student body was usually 0.I'I.I.M., which means Oh Heavens, it's Monday. There was a serious side too. Remember, the frequent vocational talks, apti- tude tests, scholarship tests, standing in the class, R.O.T.C., college education plan, senior average, measurement for caps and gowns, graduation fee, your Senior play and your commencement rehearsals? All served to bring home the fact that the end was at hand. We thought solemnly that we ought to win this last North game, In Mem' oriam, but, even though we fought the game throughout the stadium, we lost. This made the four year North Game Score three to one, in favor of North Catholic. Although we wanted to, even the Toyland Minstrel and Christmas Pageant, our last minstrel, could not make us forget this. We payed more attention and applauded longer than we had ever done in the past, for this was to be our last minstrel, Our basketball team was studded with our classmates, and made a bril- liant last year for the squad. This was Mr. joseph Penzelik's second year. After a maze of placement tests, lectures, and other responsibilities, the Senior Play came through the mist. Say, why canl't this last year slow down, I'm in no hurry? At least we were the only ones in the school that could try out for the play Ye gads' The whole senior class must be trying out why doesnt my turn come7 Remember the white lights the other two hundred expectant boys the silent darkness of the auditorium and the calm voice of Mr Schaefer calming you with Take it easy fellow we ve got plenty of time for all of you By now most of us knew where we were going A large group to college a larger one to Jobs and a small group to the seminary So it was our fates were decided We had taken the tests been measured and paid our fee We were now taken to musing in almost everything we did It could be in the Chapel It could be in the room It could be even during a test The most generally difficult subject was English I think because of Shakespeare and Old English But we were beginning to see beauty in many things as with a butterfly emerging from a cocoon We finally saw it in Shakespeare Then came the operetta and the beautiful music that The Red Mill brought forth still clings to the sensibilities Our class controlled the leads in this endeavor and made us proud of the fact that we had been present for the first four operettas ever given at Central Then it was over Uur earthly high school education had ceased We were conscious of exerything our sensibilities could force us to perceive Even at the commencement you could feel see and hear everything that went on in the hall We had a melancholy feeling that is hard to relate But yet if you could had asked us on that day if we would lrke to live it over I feel we would have said No I wouldnt llke to live it over because I couldnt have a better four years I lust want to remember them the way they were ss 1 . . , -,, . .
