BROTHERS OF THE CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS Yes, in May, 1948, the Christian Brothers will celebrate the wonderful miracle of being over 100 years old in the United States. Educating youth for God's honor and the Catholic Church's glory has been a long and hard task to which thousands of Brothers have dedicated their prayers and life's eflorts. And thus our centennial celebration will be proud-of our progress and achievements-thankful-to God for his help without which we would have failed -confident-and desirous of God's grace and of our Catholic people's support to do the work of the Master on earth. In the background you see the picture of a saint. 1-le was inspired by God to found our order in 1680 in Rheims, France. Approved by Papal authority in 1725, the Christian Brothers have since spread to every civilized country of the world. 1Ve usually say that the F.S.C.'s are the largest body of teaching men in the Catholic Church. Even the war, in which we lost hundreds of schools and Brothers, did not deprive us of this title. Our work is that of teaching boys and young men in any type of school. For this end we are religious g that is, we take the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. In 1845 the first Christian Brothers school was established in the United States at Balti- more. Now we number five provinces in the United States. Central Catholic, Pittsburgh is staffed by Brothers of the Baltimore province as are the schools of New jersey, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.
