l un i Q Y ff , S I be JUNIOR OFFICERS. Vice-President, Paul Liedel, Treasurer, John Ready, President, Raymond Thibeault, and Secretary, Raymond Scheicln, .hlHiOfS Monroe has always been interested in the education of its citizens. When the Indian missionaries came, one of their first obiectives was the establishment of schools. ln i775 the Govern- ment and the Church cooperated in setting up lndian schools. In l8l7 Rev. John Monteith, a Presbyterian, and Father Gabriel Richard started the first public school system in Michigan called the Catholepistemiad. This system had a branch at Monroe and in i837 was incorporated as the University ot Michigan and es- tablished at Ann Arbor. The Sister Servants ot the Immaculate Heart of Mary, founded in Monroe in l845, have done a great deal for education in this community and in the hemisphere. St. Mary's Academy was established by them in 1846 and St. Mary's College in l9lO. ln the early l93O's the Catholic parishes started a Catholic Central High School taught at first by priests and sisters and later by the Brothers of Holy Cross. Both public and parochial schools have always flourished in Monroe with whole-hearted support. Today any child in Monroe has the opportunity ot receiving a sound education enabling him to live life to its fullest. There are public and parochial grade and high schools, a city library, a new and complete county library, and excellent colleges and uni- versities within reasonable distances. As Monroe grows so must its schools grow. There is a con- stant demand for more teachers, classrooms, and textbooks. We, as future leaders, must supply these needs. Some will hdve to devote their lives to teaching while the rest will support educa- tion by serving on school boards and supplying necessary funds. Education enriches life! ,fy fy Cl ass of 1961
