Vice-President, Paul Liedel, Treasurer, John Ready, President, Raymond Thibeault, and Secretary, Raymond Scheicln, .hlHiOfS Monroe has always been interested in the education of its citizens. When the Indian missionaries came, one of their first obiectives was the establishment of schools. ln i775 the Govern- ment and the Church cooperated in setting up lndian schools. In l8l7 Rev. John Monteith, a Presbyterian, and Father Gabriel Richard started the first public school system in Michigan called the Catholepistemiad. This system had a branch at Monroe and in i837 was incorporated as the University ot Michigan and es- tablished at Ann Arbor. The Sister Servants ot the Immaculate Heart of Mary, founded in Monroe in l845, have done a great deal for education in this community and in the hemisphere. St. Mary's Academy was established by them in 1846 and St. Mary's College in l9lO. ln the early l93O's the Catholic parishes started a Catholic Central High School taught at first by priests and sisters and later by the Brothers of Holy Cross. Both public and parochial schools have always flourished in Monroe with whole-hearted support. Today any child in Monroe has the opportunity ot receiving a sound education enabling him to live life to its fullest. There are public and parochial grade and high schools, a city library, a new and complete county library, and excellent colleges and uni- versities within reasonable distances. As Monroe grows so must its schools grow. There is a con- stant demand for more teachers, classrooms, and textbooks. We, as future leaders, must supply these needs. Some will hdve to devote their lives to teaching while the rest will support educa- tion by serving on school boards and supplying necessary funds. A true home is the basic institution of society. Without the home, life would be an impersonal journey in a friendless land. Liteoriginates and is perpetuated in the home. In Monroe too, as anywhere else, the home has always held its place of im- portance. The early French settlers had homes and real homes they were. These settlers believed in having large families with foundations ot high ideals and standards of morality and integrity. Relatives had the warmest of ties and their hospitality was genuine. Their homes radiated love and peace throughout the whole area. It is true that these families suffered many hard- ships but they merely served to draw them closer together. Parents of tanorrow would do well to remember these hardy French settlers and to follow their example. We must realize that the family is a unit and that units work in coordination and harmony. So too, families should do things together, parents and children bound together by chains of love and affection. This is a true home. A coach s dreamll Head Coach Jack Castlgnola and assistant Coach Tony Difiore Falcon mentors for the past six years can now realize their dream an undeafeated season Led by the two fine co captains speedy Tom Labeau and burly Jack Wilkie the feared Falcon eleven outclassed class A teams from both the Detroit and Toledo areas ln posting an 8 0 season record the Falcons scored victories ranging from a close 26 20 sneaker over Rogers to an 83 0 rout of Ida Due praise should be given to the fine coaching staff as well as to the entire squad for the post season honor as the Detroit Times Number One Class B Eleven Here s a rundown of the season A perfect night for football opened the season for the Falcons against highly tauted Flat Rock Led by senior end Mark Laboe with two T D s and three interceptions the Falcon eleven trounced the Rams 32 6 Moving to Inkster the following week the C C followers were delighted as the running of Dennis Assenmacher and the defensive work of Tom LaBeau and .lack Wilkie downed the Vikings 47 6 High after the lnkster win the Falcons were preparing for their scrap with the 58 champs of the River Valley League, Ida. There was no cause for worry though as the bench express rolled over helpless Ida 83-O. With the easier games in the schedule completed, the Falcons iourneyed to South Lyons where the overpowering runs of big Jim Volpi and sophomore Ron Labeau outlasted the immense South Lyon front wall for a 26:0 Falcon victory. After crippling iniuries during the previous week to two front line men, Mark Laboe and Sebastisn Verhoeven, the Falcon eleven trudged toward Toledo, Ohio, and Rogers High. Outweighed 30 pwnds per man the Falcons held on for a 26-20 victory. Leading at halftime 20-6 due to the running of elusive Denny Assenmacher and smashing of Jim Volpi, the C.C. eleven had to withstand a Rogers threat. The score having been tied at 20-20 with two minutes left, Falcon quarterback Tom LaBeau engineered a T D drive to assure Catholic Central of another win. The brilliant passing and running of Tom LaBeau led the Falcons easily by the last opponents by scores of 27-0, 59-l2, and 49-7 over Hillsdale, Onsted, and Bedford respectively to assure the '59 Falcons of an undefeated season, their high state ranking, and a league championship. u . Morrin, F. Schmidt, M. Laboe, B. Imo, J. Ready, R. Reau, C. Sara, and J. Morrin. A large share of credit for the success of school theatrical endeavors is due to the charity of one woman, Mrs. Peg Harris. Giving up her precious time to teach dance numbers to the nimble-footed Central boys, Mrs. Harris has contributed much variety to school plays and to Tunerama productions. Starting with a group of willing and eager, but often uncoordinated students, what a tremendous accomplishment it is for this lady to place her tledglings behind the footlights and have them do so well. This is the only reward she asks for her time and effort. Her dance arrangements range from the beautiful waltz to the noisy square dance. She presents the basic steps so that even the thickest of dancers will pick it up. Her cheerful smile and ready willingness to forget the little errors made, urge her pupils to try even harder. The no-gum rule enforced to the hilt will be remembered by her students at C. C. for 0 long time to Come. Mrs. Peg Harris is a lovely lady who has made many worthwhile contributions to C. C. productions and we would like to say: It has been great fun Mrs. Harris l Many thanks.
