wht Hlrntnr lllness As soon as he had legained strength enough he boarded the steamer fox home and set sail for the States After landing Allen hastened to his bankers office To hls sur prlse and dismay he found the place closed and upon inquiry learned the bank had tailed All his capltal was gone' His palents dead There was no one to we come him home He was a physical and mental wreck The wo1 d no longel possessed any att1 actions for the weakened dlsappomt ed youth He left New York for any place he could reach by his small stone of money The wretched llttle stieet looked dalk and dismal that late autumn night A few gas iets and dlmly lighted windows threw small rays of llght against the darkness Suddenly the dools of a saloon were thrown open and a black mass was hur ed upon the pavement This black heap was a man His face was worn and haggeled deep furrows were around hls mouth and a little blood oozed from a wound on his forehead and mixed Wlth the dlrt of the gutter Few would have recognlved Allen Haldlng the ambitious young engineer who had set out to COHQUQI new wor ds Broken by his physical suffering he had given hlmself up to despair and there he lay a dope fiend a drunkard and an outcast Two women hurrying home vsere moved by sudden pity and calling two passersby took Allen to thelr tenement home where a doctor was hurriedly summoned When Allen came to his senses a tall dark dis tlnguished man was bendlng over him Nothmg was said but the doctor injected something 1n Allen s aim and soon he was asleep The followlng day when the doctor arrn ed Allen was ab e to tell what had brought h1m to that condition I have not always been the wretch you found Once I was young lng but death would be welcome to me and w1th all my soul I wish for it Well suppose you tell me the whole story The doctor listened mutely to his tae of suffering and despair here and there durlng the narration a look of astonlshment and perplexlty would creep over the doc tor s face Final y he blurted out You can t be Allen Hardmg who was graduated from High 1n 03 I was then but I m not any longer I changed my name so as not to brmg disgrace to my old Dad Then surely you remember me Im J 1m Carter the boy to whom you gate the scholarship You were ambitious once why have you abon doned hope? Uhr illlmtur align Ufangleh fdlclegrzrxn HAT a Joy It was to know that our last lesson was fimshed and our summer vacatlon was about to begm One could see the glrls of the Academy gathered 1n groups here and there plannlng how they should spend thexr vacatlon and each 1nv1t1ng the other to spend a few days at her home I was employed at that tlme 1n packmg my trunk and was not bother1ng myself wlth what they were talkmg about for I had already planned to spend my holldays w1th my room mate Mary Whlle I was thus engaged Mary entered and asked me to send a telegram to her brother requestmg h1m to meet us at the hotel and suggested that I slgn my own name Im sure he ll understand that It IS from me So com plylng w1th her request I went to obtam the Slsters permlssxon Thls bemg granted I hurrled to the telegraph office and scr1bbled a message to Mary s brother which read Please meet me and Marry at the Annex at two oclock Rush that I sald to the operator who glanced over the message and grmned Certalnly he Sald thls sort of a message always goes rush and I W1Sh you luck Hls last words puzzled me why dld he w1sh me luck?
