wh: Qllmtur nlllllilflll 'lflrrntzrgr HEN Sanford Lawrence vsa carrled out the doorway of h1s stately Flfth Avenue resldence never to return the prosperlty of the house departed wlth 1ts master True whlle he l1ved he had been able to ma1nta1n a beautiful home Wlth the semblance of great wealth but after h1s death an examlnatlon of h1s aialrs d1sclosed only a staztllng debt It was the not unu ual case of the seemmgly prosperous busmess man who has lost all 1n a few unwlse lnvestments Thus he had bequeathed to h1s wlfe and daughter h1S sole survlvors a legacy of debts The daughter Maxcla was not the least llke elther of her parents Not l1ke her frall dependant mother st1ll less llke her careless debonalr father She was a self rehant thoughtful young creatu1e w1th a sense of duty dommatlng even her ch1ld1sh plays and wlth an earnestness of purpose that made her perform that duty at all costs and undevlatmgly The s1tuat1on 1n wh1ch her bereax ement placed bel ww as assumed Wlth an exultatlon of consecratlon Father home lncome all swept away Mar c1a reahzed that she was to mean all these and more to her strlcken mother In her waklng hours as th1S glrl of elghteen looked down the years she vowed herself worldlessly to the task One day her mother should have a home and the comforts to wh1ch she was accustomed and she would provlde lt havlng flrst dlscharged the debts wh1ch were her sole legacy on begmnlng l1fe She had recelved no speclal tramlng but had attended the best of schools and supplemented thls knowledge by profound readmg hence her educatlon was of the hlghest order There had never seemed a necesslty of the daughter of the prosperous Mr Lawrence to be armed against mls fortune so IH an era of speclaltles and demand for tramed labor MQFCIR was wholly unsk1lled Intelllgent mdefatlgable smgle 1n purpose qulck of w1t yet thor ough rellable to a scruple pray erful MHTCIB could not fall She 1m medlately enrolled at a first class busmess school and by applylng herself dlhgently she was able to complete her course 1n three months In the oilice where she found emp oyment she was consp1cuous among the other gay lrresponslble under bred glrls Her employers soon s1ng'ed her out for hlgher work and her salarv leaped to double the amount she recelved at first Thls unexpected plece of good fortune Marcla recelved not so much wlth a feehng of Joy as vuth that of thanksglx ng and pet1t1on For two yeals she stluggled along recelvlng a wage wh1ch pe1 rnltted her and her mother to lne modestly and at the same tlme dlscharge most of her father s 48 ' Q 4' o , 1 S . whr illmlnr debts But there was newer enough for pleasure and she never tasted the Joys 1n whlch most gnls of he1 age revel One day she had an ot'fe1 a really splendid offer from the discerning but procrastmatlng firm fo1 whom she worked They had long seen that Marcia was lnvaluable to them and had at last evinced that knowledge Henceforth she was to hold a pos1t1on of trust and confidence and her salary was to be commensui ate with hel deserts It was a day of exciting eventfulness With thlq offei had come to Marcia s knowledge through an elderly man whom she had interested the opportunity to secure a llttle suburban house It cou d be bought on the installment plan the terms of Wh1Ch since her promotion were Wlthlli possibility for her Her elderly adviser was in the real estate business and could give M3FC1a special ad vantages lf she cared to purchase 1n the new suburb of which he had control Marcia almost ran to the boarding house which she and her mother called home and poured out hel stcry of that eventful day The latter could hardly realize that it was Malcla flushed laughing bright of eye glad as only they can be glad who have sacrificed evelything for a right eous end and see success within then grasp The fol owing day being Sunday after hearing Mass and entreatmg God s blessing on the prolect she was about to undertake Marcia and her mother went out to Fosterbrook to mspect the house It was a delightful day for such an excursion a beautiful October Sunday full of enough s umbel ous sunshine to have beautlfiecl a less attractlve llttle nest than the house at which they had come to ook Marcla returned 1n a rapture and the next day entered upon her new duties That week she recelved the deed subject to certain conditions now made easy for her to fulfill dolent of fresh plaster va1n1sh and hope When after a year s residence as a commuter of Fosterblook Marcia returned one evening Wlth the clear deed to the tiny house whlch was no longer a dream but a blissful reality for she had that day made the last payment on the house which was now he1 very own She said to her mothel Just think mother dear it IS our home the home I have been wo1 klng for pl aying for dreaming of all this time Needless to say two fervent acts of thanksgiving ascended that night betole God Malcia thanked Him for the help He had given hei in making success hens and the mother tor the daughter with which He had blessed hex h yh lif Leona l NIcDonald 94 il I Y ! 4, A . , . .
