UHF illlmtnr The Clluirvtvh qblflzll ID you CXQI see an auto lace such as was gnen on the thiee cornered twenty mlle track at Ford Clty along the Cadlllas river eighty miles north of Columb1a F01 months the race had been talked about by the promoters who were former racers themselves and knew the game from the start to the finlsh The Motor Dome Assocla tion with Parenthesls Prlce as Manager and Straight Llne Green as asslstant were the main promoteis while Wrlght and Bader had httle to 'Rav w1th no one listening Th1s composed a quartet who had world Wlde leputatlon of fleeclng the patrons and knocking off the drivers The only two men they hlred were Speedy Rogers and Sklnny Fayad who could circle the twenty mlle fence every ten mmutes on foot and these we1e employed to keep the youngsters out and were allowed to witness the race D1 OV1dQd they would not loot for any pa1t1cula1 car For weeks the drlvers could be seen tunlng up every part and WIFE of the1r cars unt1l as Comet Aughenbaugh stated They were all the plnk of perfectlon The race was due to start at 9 41 o clock on Feb 29th and several days before the race promoters announced that they had sold all the tlck ets except those of Sheep Skln Lambert and Copenhagen Rokoskl who had galned a monoply on the first two rows and were selhng them at five tlmes the price At one oclock all the drlvers and their mechanics were on hand eagerly awa1t1ng the slgnal to start Before the race the ladies were placlng all kmds of confidence in Hlgglns green car that had Just come out of Mlcheal Angelo Butler s palnt shop Hlg xx as accompamed by mechanlc Mah Jongg Slmbeck who refused to race but finally consented provlded H1gg1nS would keep his eyes on the track especlally when he passed the grandstand The people 1n section No 2 vs ere pullmg strong for Casper Relnsel and h1S mechanic Beezer in the unspotted Buttercup Special Those on east Slde of the bleachers were placlng the1r bets on Comet providlng that Kelly was the mechanic and had the seat securly attached to the floor boards so that he would be sure of not blOVSlDg out The maiorlty of those 1n the maln sectlon were strong tor Tornado Johnson and his skilled mechanic Lightning Hull who had to in eal one of Comic Hackett s latest patent head gears to keep h1s head vs ell balanced i ' , 1 uf ' b 4 V v Q H ' v , . . , , Y - ,. . . Uhr Hirntnr The town band was out ln full force dxsplavmg then new brlght led sults w1th yellow border 31 ound the coat and down the pant legs under the supe1w1s1on of Swagger Qtlck ROkOSk1 Whlle puttmg up wlth thls music Casper dex oured a glass of mllk and Hlgglns a bow of clackers All were waltlng nervously for the clack of the DlSt0l whlch went off un expectedlv and lmmedlately the cals dalted off hke a thundel bolt For the first lap and well 1nto the second the four entrles contmued the d17z5 pace neck and neck untll hnally Hxggns folged ahead and on the tenth lap w h1le D'ISSlHg the gl3.llflQt3.H4l l0lg8tl21I1g hls plomlse he absent mlndedly glanced up at the spectatols and notlced a Strawberry Blonde The result of thlq was h1S car swerx ed and had It not been for Mah Jongg he would have crashed 1nto the 1udges stand Thls allowed the other two entrles to reach hlm and Comet forged ahead by half a lap Wlth Tornado closmg upon hum But Tornado and Llghtenmg no t1c1ng a Rose beslde a LIZZIC lnstantly lost control and thelr car was completely W1 ecked and they were folced to qult the race they passed h1m on the twentxeth lap On the twenty second Casper had to go to hls p1t and have hls engme repalred but whlle there he found he had been r1d1ng on a flat tlre and an empty gas tank so he declded It would be too late to reenter the rac wlth the hope of w1nn1ng and thus he wlthdrew W1th only H1gg1HS and Comet left now the race became more 1nterest1ng and feellng was mtense Com1ng on the twenty thlrd lap they had only two more laps to go and the race would be ended Then were about even 1n th1s lap both drxv ers real171ng thls drowe for all that was 1n them but nevertheless they still kept neck and neck unt1l the twenty fifth lap Then Hlggms dr1v1ng wlldly overtook Comet but had no sooner passed h1m when unfortunately h1S steer1ng gear broke h1S car sw ened turned over sxx tlmes dashed a good hundred yards tulned ove1 and over th1 ee times stal ted spxnmng on ltS radlator cap about elght tlmes and then the gasollne tank exploded and the cal was b'own to DIQCQS Aftel the smoke had clealed away much to the surprlse of the onlookers Hlgglns was seen comlng towal ds the grandstand wlth the steel mg geal IH hls hand Thls left Comet w1n the race cxossmg the finlshmg llne at 150 mlles pei As a prwe he won a cellulold gasohne tank Thus ended the most erccltlng race ever held ln Ford Cltv Paul Maloney 24 LcoJ 'NIcCall1an 24 v K ' . .
