P Mmtnr I am sure we wlll pay you well Sul ely thought the man thls IS an opportunltv not to be thrown to the wlnds All llght Lady I wlll stay but I can t tell you how grateful I feel towards you The llttle glrl who all th1s tlme had been a sllent llstenel clapped hel hands wlth loy Oh' I am so happy muvvel dear and then I can have someone to tell me SIOIIQS of Jesus when you are busy A shadow flltted across the man s face as he followed the woman to the room whlch he was to occupy Chapter Two Many years have passed and we find an old very old bent man who IS unable to walk wlthout the use of a cane wlth a sad yet Joyful heart He knows that the woman IS hls daughter the glrl hls grand chlld Yet because he came to them a beggal yes a tramp he wlll not tell them that he IS thelr hope thelr wlsh Durlng the many years that have passed hls emblttered healt has been filled wlth the greatest tenderness he has falth agaln ln hls God and he owes all thlS to the llttle glrl who had played such a strange part IH thelr llves He IS the councelor and advlsor of the husband who loves hlm as a father Every morn mg the l1ttle glrl would go out to the garden wlth prayer book ln hand to show hlm a new prayer she had learned But one day she IS taken suddenly lll wlth a fever whlch the doctors clalm IS fatal Doctors surgeons and physlclans from all over the country who have a leputatlon for belng very good are sent for but the same verdlct IS pronounced by all She wlll llve fol a few weeks and no longer The old man prays never had he played so hard ln all hIS years Then one nlght the prlest IS sent fol There was a look steallng over her features that could not be mlstaken and the prlest knelt by the bedslde and read the commend atory prayer Before It was over the hand relaxed ln h1S hold and when he ralsed hls head he knew as well as dld all those dear to her that the face before them wlth 1tS sweet radlance of peace had felt the benedlctlon of angellc hands and that the saved soul at rest for ever needed hls prayers no more later and the sermon contalned words of utmost comfort to them promlses that had taken the stlng out of thelr sorlow The heaven plerclng falth had shown them the vlctory ln whlch death IS swallow ed up the blessedness of the dead that dle ln the Lord the gloly of the lmmortalltv whlch thls mortal shall put on the power of that Re surrectlon and that llfe ln whlch to belleve IS to llve forever But alone that summer evenlng ln the qulet church yard wlth the dead of yesterday and the dead of long ago at hls feet the old man spent the saddest but perhaps the most profitable hour of hls llfe By the grave of the chlld who to hlm had been the brlghtest freshest dear est thlng ln all the world he learn ed the frallty of the llfe on whlch we stake so much the folly of all happlness that IS only of th1s earth Harrlet Rowan 24 48 Uh ' , U , ' - aa 97 Q . . , v y , ' ' 1' xc 1' y , . .H .
