Uhr Mmtur Shzrley Makes Good ISS Shlrley Llvlngstone had engaged herself as com panlon and secnetary to Madame Marton a weal thy and oplnlonated French lady and was to leave a week later for that ladys home St Saveur on the banks of the St Lawrence Nature had done much for lt ln the way of s1tuat1on and It was a beautlful place One pecular tralt of the old lady was to preserve all the ancestral beauty of her home as she ex pressed lt and she could not be IH fluenced by anyone to change a slngle detall ln the appolntments of dlsmal fashlon wh1ch had pre valled 1n and about It durmg the last hundred years When Shlrley allghted from the the statlon and followed Madame 1nto the ancestral abode of the Mar tons a sense of homeslckness and desolatlon overcame her The en tlre aspect of the 1nter1or was one of gloom and monotony There were no carpets on the hlghly po hshed floors no draperles or dell cate lace curtalns noth1ng but clumsy shutters at the wlndows Every room of the spaclous manslon was wamscoted w1th cost ly woods whxch ln many lnstances was beautlfully carved The fur nlture had been costly ln 1ts day but lt was of anclent pattern and arranged about the rooms 1n a way to suggest elther a prayer meet 1ng or a funeral Takmg the place all 1n all It was about as dlsmal and gloomy a dwelhng as Shlrley had ever been 1n On the walls were plenty of plctures but they were mostly of Madame s dead and gone relatlves and to the sensltlve young glrl they seemed l1ke grlm spectres who wlth uncanny eyes were watching her every movement wlth mallclous gaze from out the dusky shadows Can I ever l1ve ln this desolate place? Was her one thought when left to herself But hers was too brlght a nature to ponder long on a dlsagreeable subJect and she was soon lnterested Wlth the hopefulness of youth and the ready adaptatlon to clrcumstances Wh1Ch a cheerful courageous nature al ways manlfests she mentally add d Ah but I w1ll soon make lt pretty and attractlve here lf Mad she thmk that Madame who had heretofore been very obstlnate IH the rule of changxng appolntments would consent to her plan At the first opportunlty that presented ltself Shlrley asked Madame Are you wllllng I should arrange my room as I l1ke'7 Of course chlld she responded and so durmg the days that followed Shlrley made the most of her pr1 vlleges We shall not here go 1nto detalls as to what she d1d One week later when she had arranged everythlng to her satlsfactlon she 1nv1ted Madame to make her a call Make you a call? repeated her mlstress wxth a sharp glance at 42 !, - c Q , - , I . 9. v Y ' , 7 ' ? 7 . 9 ' .
