512 Mentor Spud Anderson had arranged the field beautlfully for the occas sion having covered all furrows so that It gave the field the appear ance of a national league type Both teams made a wonderful showing on the diamond Pump km Center with their blue overalls and red shirts attracted the eye while Squashvllle w1th their yellow trousers and green shirts also at tracted the eyes of all The game was called for 2 P M by the noted umplre Enoch Ca1lor who has umpired the past two battles The followlng bat teries were announced Pumpkln Center Spltball P11ce twlrler Brick Johnson recelver Squash ville Spike McHugh twlrler Sap Sutter receiver Following the announclng of the batterles Cyrus Reilly greatest comedlan entertained the folks by his wltty saylngs Exactly at 2 oclock Enoch called Play Ba'l Pumpkin Cen ter was to take the field because lt had drawn the shortest stlaw Spltball walked to h1s box with a proud air and many of the fam ous ofliclals of the village such as constable Jake Cyphert were heard to remark that lf Splt ball s arm would work as well as h1S iaws no doubt Pumpkin Center would wln The game was on Sap Sutter up w1th a grln that showed hlm to be minus a few teeth Spltball s e5 es were on Sap and wlth a look that people say terrorized the bat ter strlke one strlke two strlke three Sap out Pumpkln Centel could not find thell volces and Spltball felt hurt because of the lack of applause The game swung back and foith w1th lntervals for signals and for the pat1on1z1ng Zlgzag The elghth inning Squashulle 2 Pumpkln Center 2 Brick John son up to bat ln haste he got the wrong one and walked from the plate to secure h1S old famous bat and vshen he returned to the plate he was called out for Splke had continued to twlrl and finally fan ned Brlck When Enoch an nounced this gi eat te11or relgned and whlle the dlspute continued people were heard screamlng and seen running 1n all dlrectlons for Spuds mule had broken loose from his stable when he heard the decxslon of Enoch fol he deter mined to square matters A w1ld chase was made about the field with the mule k1ck1ng dirt for Immediately the constable to up hold the laws of the village forced Spud to pay a fine of 855 00 which was placed on hlm for permitting w1ld animals to chase about places where people of peace lovlng and ClY1l1Z9d nature were interested Spud was forced to pay the fine and lmmedlately ordered the people to dlsperse from h1s field and as neither would play on elther s grounds each vlllage band and team clalmed a vlctoly and marched from the field Whlle Spud was seen walklng toward the stable vuth h1S pet mule What happened to Enoch cried Spltball Here I am came a voice from out of the sky There was poor Enoch cllnglng to the tip of the flag po'e terlor ized from bemg chased bv the mule J Hubert Rlddle 23 cc u , - Q . . . . - . 1 . . v . - aa - rr - - . . Uhr Mmtur Shzrley Makes Good ISS Shlrley Llvlngstone had engaged herself as com panlon and secnetary to Madame Marton a weal thy and oplnlonated French lady and was to leave a week later for that ladys home St Saveur on the banks of the St Lawrence Nature had done much for lt ln the way of s1tuat1on and It was a beautlful place One pecular tralt of the old lady was to preserve all the ancestral beauty of her home as she ex pressed lt and she could not be IH fluenced by anyone to change a slngle detall ln the appolntments of dlsmal fashlon wh1ch had pre valled 1n and about It durmg the last hundred years When Shlrley allghted from the the statlon and followed Madame 1nto the ancestral abode of the Mar tons a sense of homeslckness and desolatlon overcame her The en tlre aspect of the 1nter1or was one of gloom and monotony There were no carpets on the hlghly po hshed floors no draperles or dell cate lace curtalns noth1ng but clumsy shutters at the wlndows Every room of the spaclous manslon was wamscoted w1th cost ly woods whxch ln many lnstances was beautlfully carved The fur nlture had been costly ln 1ts day but lt was of anclent pattern and arranged about the rooms 1n a way to suggest elther a prayer meet 1ng or a funeral Takmg the place all 1n all It was about as dlsmal and gloomy a dwelhng as Shlrley had ever been 1n On the walls were plenty of plctures but they were mostly of Madame s dead and gone relatlves and to the sensltlve young glrl they seemed l1ke grlm spectres who wlth uncanny eyes were watching her every movement wlth mallclous gaze from out the dusky shadows Can I ever l1ve ln this desolate place?
