Flo Flo was certainly placed in a very embarrassing position How would she meet Bobs mother as her maid when he had taken it for granted that she was an invited guest to her house partV How was she to know though that Bobs mother had remarried and was Mrs Appenhe1m Should she tell Bob all about it or wait and confide in his mother? Surely she would understand So troubled was her mind that she saw nothin that was going on about her and heard llttle of Bob s convelsat on u til almost uncon sciously she felt herself being led up the steps of a spacious veranda whele Mrs Appenheim s guests w ere assembled These proved to be some of her most intimate friends Next she was being pre sented to Bobs mother whom of course she had met before Mrs Appenheim understood the situation perfectly and led her at once to her own private apartment where she asked sympatheticallv but with a touch of humor Well Flo Flo my dear what foolish prank is th1s You surely carried it through cleverly and I was the unsuspecting victim of your Joke Flo Flo unable longer to restrain herself burst into passionate tears and explained Just why she had done it But she was sorry she said that she would be unable to go thru with it since Mrs Ap penheims guests were all friends of hers so she decided she must go home by the next train But my dear you must know that you were included in my guest list and even now your moth er mav have arrived to attend my house party You will surely stay as my guest This explanation of Mrs Appen helm changed the matter entirelv and Flo Flo decided that the wisest course to pursue was to remain as would arouse comment amon the guests if she would depart so soon and seemingly without a reason After much persuasion on her hos tess part she was induced to stay That evening she Joined in the fes tixities as gallV as the others and soon became the most popular among them The days that followed were one round of golf motoring bathing and boating with parties and dances 1n the evening She became especially 1nt1mate with Bob Em eri who had always shown her maiked attention Two months later Flo Flo re turned to school Manv of the girls weie familiar with the story of Mrs Appenhe m s maid which had already assumed the stvle of a ro mance The w hlte flag of surren der gleaming on Flo Flo s left hand told the truth about the mat ter She had surrendered uncondi tlonally to--Bob Emery of course LeonaJ McDonald 24 , ,,. . ,, . .
