Uhr Mlmtnr The day of the trlal came and Wmlfrede and her mother were estabhshed IH a sulte of rooms at one of New York s qulet hotels At ten o clock they entered the court room filled w1th mllltary offlcers Wmny began to feel nervous but agaln the reassurmg flgures of Mr Darwm and Mr Kent f1lled her mth a determlnatxon to do her share 1n condemmng the man who had dared to try to dodge hls duty to h1s country Finally the Judge and jurors took thelr places and the prlsoner was brought ln under a heayy guard of Marmes He apparently pald no at tentlon whatever to any one or any of hlS surroundlngs Mrs Quin lan seated 1n a chalr not far away from Wmny s leaned forward and gazed lntently lnto the face f James Kelly At last he was forced to stand up and speak After hls flrst sentence she gave a low crv and falnted quletly awav WIUUV rushed to the Sld6 of her mother and anxlously trled to revxve her Flnally Mrs Qulnlan opened her eves and strange to saN they dld not rest on Wmny as mlght be ex pected but upon the prlsoner and she muttered My son' Wmny was struck dumb for the moment and sald Why mother dear what can you mean? You can t know what you are saylng Yes mv dear answered Mrs Qulnlan that IS your brother Jack who left home several years ago Go ask hlm to come to me after the tr1al Wltl a feellng of agom IH her heart Wmny went back and gave her evldene w1th a trace of unvn 1l hngness ln her tone But who could blame her?
