(Dedica tion To our parents and faculty we, the class of 1966, proudly dedicate our HI LITES. It was through your sacrifices that we were able to receive our Catholic education. We also dedicate our yearbook to the men fighting in Viet Nam. We hope to follow in the footsteps of these gallant men to uphold our standards of democracy in the world today. 2 FACULTY Mr, R. One of the Ready for Actioni things on the agenda last week included shoveling sand into wet areas along the football field. Here, coach Lyle Nannen of Central Catholic shows student manager, “Fireball” Roberts the proper technique in the art of shoveling. 43 1966 McGill’s Passing Smith’s Running, Pace Win West Point’s Central Cath- olic Blue jays opened their 1965 home season in winning fashion last Thursday night as they rolled to a 39 13 con- quest of the Oakland Vik- ings. The victory boosted the Jays’ season mark to 2-0. The Bluejays rode the passing arm of senior quarterback Rich McGill to the decisive victory. McGill passed for four touchdowns despite a steady Irizzle that made the pigskin : -vet and hard to hang onto, i The rain soaked field made footing unsteady, but didn’t1 seem to hamper the running f All-state Reggie Smith, vho tallied twice, and rushed for 145 yards in 14 carries ?or a 10.3 average. He also lad an 85 yd TD run called ack because of a clipping enalty. Coach Lyle Nannen’s Blue- iay eleven took the opening cickoff on the 29 yard line nd marched 61 yards for :heir first TD. ■McGill passed to Ken Emanuel for the final 35 yds ind the score. Smith plunged for the PAT. Oakland came right back )n a 65 yd sustained drive of :heir own to tie the count at 7-all as Roger Saf plunged jver from the 2. Jim Ahrens Dassed to Mike Anderson for the PAT. The first quarter anded w’ith the score knotted at 7-7. . Reggie Smith put the Jays ond period as he recovered a Viking fumble to set up a 45 yd scoring drive which he capped with a 23 yd run into paydirt. McGill hit Dan Wortman with a 12 yard aerial strike of which Wortman made a circus catch and McGill plunged for the PAT to give the Jays a 20-7 halftime bulge. Third quarter scoring came on a 46 yard run by Smith and McGill’s 5 yd scoring strike to Ken Emanuel. Final tally for the Bluejays | came when McGill passed to Roger Wortman for a 7 yard I touchdown. I Oakland’s final six points | also came in the final i eriod I when Viking quarterback Jim Ahrens and Mike Anderson combined on a 5 yd scoring pass. 1965 . 4 'V 4 % fy. vO - of Smith Stars Again at Aquinas West Point’s Central Cath- olic Bluejays cleared another big hurdle on their 19 6 5 schedule by dumping David City Aquinas, 27-14 in a bat- tle on the Monarch field last Friday night. A pair of touchdowns in the final two minutes of play by All-state Full- back Reggie Smith broke a 14-14 tie and gave the local parochials their third straight win. Coach Lyle Nannen’s Blue- jays drew first scoring blood in the opening quarter as Smith rambled 82 yards for a six-pointer. Rich McGill ran for the PAT and the Jays held a 7-0 first quarter edge. Aquinas tied the score at 7-7 in the second canto as Terrv Geiger plunged for a 7 yard TD. He also booted the extra point. CC marched 75 yards fol- lowing the return kickoff to pull into a 14-7 halftime ad- vantage. Rich McGill unlim- bered his passing arm and hit Dan Wortman with a per- fect strike for the 30 yard touchdown. Smith bulled in for the extra point. Following the intermission break, both teams tightened their defenses and the third quarter was played near mid- field as neither team could muster a scoring threat. Early in the fourth quar- ter, Lee Grossnicklaus pulled the host team into a 14-14 tie as he rambled 24 yards for a six-pointer and also plunged for the PAT. With two minutes re- maining on the score- board clock. Smith took a handoff from McGill and bulled over for the winning TD from It w o yards out. The PAT was muffed and CC led, 20-14. An accidental on-side kicl by Bob Neesen gave the lo- cals possession of the pigskii on their own 48-yd line, im- mediately following the go ahead tally. Reggie picked up his thirc touchdown of the night on b brilliant 46 yard scampei just for insurance. McGil notched the PAT to dost scoring for the night.
