Inset below: SISTER MARY LUCILLE, O.S.F., French In the study of Latin, the freshmen are confronted with something really new and different. The fundamentals of Latin must be mastered in the ninth grade. The sophomores follow Caesar through his Gallic Wars, and the juniors and seniors become acquainted with Cicero, Virgil, Aenid, and other literary ancients. Below we have an enthusiastic group of freshmen who are eager to master the fundamentals. Working together at the board helps. Senior Religion Noida An innovation this year in connection with the annual retreat for all underclassmcn was the direction of boys and girls by separate retreat masters. Held in January after examination days, the retreat serves as a stimulus for a better life spiritually and scholastically. The seniors' retreat takes place in May. It affords them an opportunity to give serious thought to the new fields of labor which they are about to enter. Lebanon-6 Traveling to Leltanon with hopes high, the Vikings chalked up their first game ol- the 1945 season on the red side of the ledger, bowing to a powerful Lebanon High School team, 6-ll. From the first whistle the Vikings started shak.ly and they did not settle down until the second half. Hampered by a steady rain, the Vikings were unable to reach paydirt, even though they made a strong bid in the last period. The bitter taste of defeat was sweetened by the fact that the Vikings bowed to a good class A team. Vikings-7 . . . Lancaster Catholic-0 The Creen antl Gold bounced into the win column by defeating Lancaster Catholic 7-ll. The Vikings put all their scoring in one spectacular drive which carried them 65 yards for a touchdown. This attack was spearheaded by the passing of Bert Daday and the hard running of Bill Trimble. It was a see-saw battle for the first three quarters until Cpntral Catholic unleashed its attack and Bill Trimble driving over from the lil-yard line, chalked up the Vikings' only tally. Reading Central CatholIc-38 Traveling to Reading for the fourth game on the schedule, the Vikings gridiron machine bogged down against Reading Central Catholic, taking 1 58-7 setback. In the very first quarter, the middle of the Viking line was softened afte having lost Kline and Krause, two veteran guards. The Reading team smashet through to the Viking ten, and on second down, Readings Binder passed ti Fromuth for Readings first score. To answer this threat, the Vikings cami back with a long pass by Bakes to Trimble, good for 50 yds. to the Viking IU Kinek then carried over for a tally. ln the second half, the Viking team suffered under penalties and Reading High taking advantage racked up two more touchdowns. A 12 game schedule had been arranged for this year's team indicating the school's progressive sports policy. Central Catholic got off to a very poor start, not being able to get the lon ha k b l g 's'et al season out of their system. But once the Green and Gold settled down, they gave a very commend- able account of themselves. For its opener, CCHS dropped a 19-2 decision to Bethlehem H. S. The Vikings drew first blood getting two runs in the first inning, however Bethlehem wasted no time getting these back and plenty more. In the Reading contest conditions were not much improved. Besides losing another game by a lopsided score of 18-4, C. C. also lost the services of Eugene Kessler, veteran outfielder, who fractured his ankle sliding into second. The Vikin . o t e1r two previous defeats by amassing a 15 to 6 win over Perkiomen Prep. Of the eleven hits registered by the Vikings, the game featured doubles by Kinek, Csencsits and a homer by Booros. Once again the Bethlehem High Hurricanes were victorious over Central, this time 8-2. It was by virtue of 3 successive home-runs and 8 hits to our 7 that saw the Hurricanes through. gs rocketed from the depths f h ' Taking a breather d ' uring practice, the Vikings team, Kminus George Kineki, Mike Martin, Tony fn 14 !V Me!!
