A complete secretarial course is offered to the indi- viduals who intend to enter the business world. Those who are preparing for the professional fields are equipped with a college preparatory course. For the student whose ambitions do not lie in either of these fields the general course is pre- pared. Talents in art, music, public speaking, and journalistic writing are developed in special classes. With each course the students receive four years of religious instruction, so that they leave school as worthy moral citizens to take their place in the world of tomorrow. t s E .3 Q V 52 5,031.7 4 ', va. The fu- ture business women of Section I D are attempt- ing to find the answer to the coffee problem. With helpful suggestions from the group at the board, the students in their seats are bound to reach the solution. - ll SUCH an enthusiastic section of Fresh- men boys, you never did see before! No question in Religion remains un- solved, when they get working on it. Apparently Richard Miller will have the opportunity to express his views on the matter. As the eye travels straight down this page, it perceives action ex erywhere. Beginning with the first picture to the right, we encounter 1 group of budding scientists. The wonders of the mi- croscopic world are being revealed to them in the General Science class They gl7C in won derment Richard Buck Francis Now ak and oseph Wolf make jottings on the comments and observations of their fellow classmates IN our second picture, we meet a group of as p1r1ng young linguists, endeaxoring to master the so called dead language Helen Cziguth and Marie Henry take turns to test their class mates on their knowledge of the Latin vocab ulary THL bus1ness men in the third picture on the right know the 1ntr1cac1es involved in balanc mg a budget Carl Ettl points out to am s Kempf the mistake thlt is causing all the trou ble These young bookkeepers are members of the unlor Business Class A WORD to the wise, say these English stu dents The easiest way to learn the function of words in a sentence is by diagram Its lots of fun, and makes the study of grammar easy SLG!-I STARTING at the top of this p1ge, and taking the pictures in order as they appear at the left we Find Hrst of all a group of animal lovers in the Biology class gathered around white rats, with scales, food, Ind notebooks It hlnd to mlke important ObSL1Nltl0I1S They irc plrtleullrly interested in the study of diselses caused by lack of vitamins in diets THI moment 'ou aze at the second icture, l g P you know it is an efficient geometry class Exery thing you need to solve your problems the easy way is here a protractor, a compass, and 1 few hcl ful sufvestions from the teacher P 2:-is I1 you like poetry then youll tpprecilte the work of our Sophomore Lnghsh Cllsses por trayed in the third picture There you find 1 choicy bit of Christmas poetry collected and bound together under a specially designed cower IN this age when a crying need for democracy is universal, our Sophomores use a twofold 1p 1JI'O'lCl1 vlsull 1nd voell to mlke 1 Clvies lesson then own Dorothy Quinn is expluning the process of a bill in Congress becoming 1 llw Pr! fre-Y IT's a touch of subjunctive mood that helps to make the study of Latin dif- ficult,--so weire told by our Sopho- mores. Step into this class in Problems of Democracy and listen to the helpful discussions which prove that our Juniors are preparing in the right way for future citizenship. IT can never be said that the Ameri- can heroes do not receive adequate attention in our History classes. Note the interest displayed by the students as Elsie Koefer reveals a bit of inter- esting information which she discov- ered in her research problem on the life of Washington and Lincoln. SAY what you like, there's nothing like a bit of good wholesome information on something in which you are vitally interested. The junior re- ligion students in the first picture to the right are getting just that. The presentation of the highlights of Church History is apparently hold- ing them spellbound. PICTURE number two introduces us to the Stenography class. They tell us it is quite an accomplishment to read, without hesitation, the characters on the Gregg Wordsign chart. From all indications this goal will be reached by our Junior Commercial students before many days pass. AND here in picture number three we have as Hne a group of typists as you,ll Hnd anywhere! Remember their demonstration of rhythmically typing to music at the Commercial Assembly? With this group it means something to reach a speed of forty words a minute. To our Junior chemists the new and latest mira- cle of science has a great appeal. Their laboratory periods give them the opportunity to experiment with the theories which the scientists have set down for them. SENIORS at Central Catholic rank highest in honors among the four classes. They set the example for the entire student body. Therefore they are placed in the most important positions in the school, not only in student government but also in clubs and student publications. They give the outstanding play of the year- the Senior Class play. The Juniors tender them a farewell dance, and in the Year Book-Glen Echoes--they are given a special section as a mark of dis- tinction. In short, the Seniors are the exclusive group of Central Catholic. Robert Wolt. laniu itkel 1 9 4 1 emocracg in .xdcllion IN September, 1940, Central Catholic High School inaugurated a Student Gov- ernment Association to develop in the students the power of self-government. Membership is open to every member of the school. The organization consists of a Central Committee and Home Room Units. The officers of the Central Committee are a president, a vice-president and a secretary, all seniors, who are appointed by the faculty. Robert NVolf, James Bicliel and Mary Unger respectively, have been appointed for the above men- tioned ofhces for the current school year. The Home Room Unit consists of a Class Representative and a Student Officer who are nominated and elected by their classmates. A plurality of votes is re- quired for election. As the name indicates, these ofhcers attend to the duties of the home room-conducting class meetings, collecting fees, and maintaining order at change of classes. The Student Government is the representative body of the school, consisting of students approved by the faculty and elected by fellow students. Its chief duty is to set before the student body the ideals of Catholic manhood and Catholic womanhood. cxlltllllg Cards: Mary . lll' CBZELPHPEI 0I'I10l' C C H S EVLRY well organized High School has its own library, and Central Catholic has one of which we are justly' proud. This activity is under the super- vision of the English Department. Many benefits are derived from participation in the Choir, for the girls learn correct pronunciation and accent, well-groomed enunciation, together with Well- modulated tones and vivid interpretation. It is one door through which to enter the field of poetry. This year's choir has made its public appearance in the Christmas Choral Drama on December 19, and in the third annual Musicale on April 27-29. The program for the musicale included selections illustrating how refrain, sequence, cumulative and unison work can be used effectively with a group of forty-six voices. It was an innovation in Central Catholic's social functions, but since it proved to be such a huge social success, we hope to make it an annual affair. Many Alumni members used this occasion to return to their Alma Mater and to renew old acquaintances with their former classmates. The glamour and glitter of the Prom exceeded all expectations. Witli pa- triotism as the theme, the auditorium was decorated in red, white and blue streamers, intermingled with a generous sprinkling of silver stars. The programs were printed in the form of an American flag, thus helping to make it truly a star-spangledn night. Music was provided by Jan Wfeiss and his broadcasting orchestra. This eventful evening will linger long in the memory of those who attended, and all are looking forward to a bigger and better prom next year. Tm success of every affair is due in a large measure to the zealous work of the members of the committee in charge. However, the Green and Gold quintet closed their 1941 season with an impressive record. The varsity members who campaigned throughout the season included William Kober, a man with some varsity experience of last year-John Hank Wieder, a veritable ballhawk off the bankboard and in the back-court-Dick McGee, a free-scoring forward-Robert Schwab, a consist- ently worthy player as forward or guard, and James Bren- nan and John Bucha, two capable floormen for the Central Catholic team. Our reserve list of varsity players included such quick witted and hard playing boys as Gerald Bauer, Eugene Mc- Cafferty, Francis Frass and Raymond McCullough. The Vikings started their ambitious schedule of 25 games with no breathers in sight, for the boys were to test the prowess of schools representing eight various leagues before the season ended. Qui' gi.i!6ll 6! J Central Catholic opened its season with an impressive victory over Fleetwood Public High in the Berks County High Gym. For their second tussle, the Krajsa-coached-quintet met and defeated the highly regarded South Whitehall Trojans by a close score of 41-39 in the Little Palestra. The Vikings continued in the winning column during the next three games defeating Slatington, Emmaus and Northampton Public High Schools. The Vikings, stately ship ran into rough weather as they invaded Emmaus to play the Moravian Borough lads for the second time. When the game was over they experienced their first defeat of the season with a score of 37-24. Central Catholic guided by their able coach came back to their winning streak in defeating Lebanon Catholic and Philadelphia Roman Catholic in two successive victories. The Green and Gold quintet invaded new territory. They went to New Jersey to play Trenton Catholic High. This venture was costly, for the second loss of the season was chalked up against them. Haut r Schwab Wierlt-r Mcfii 4- Cdamlaiond As the Centralites returned to active play in their home state, they defeated East Stroudsburg State Teachers' Col- lege Freshman and Coopersburg Public High. However, the classy teamwork and sharp shooting eyes of Camden Catholic and the Liberty Boys of Bethlehem Pub- lic proved too much for our boys as they faced their third and fourth defeats. During the next six basketball games the Vikings beat Moravian Preparatory, lost to Phillipsburg Public, defeated Coopersburg Public and Tamaqua Catholic, then lost the next two games to St. Gabriels Catholic and South W'hite- hall Public. For the remaining six games of the season the Vikings found themselves and played good, fast basketball in de- feating St. Ann's Catholic of Freeland, Phillipsburg Public. Johnstown Catholic, St. james Catholic of Chester, St. Gabriel's Catholic of Hazleton and Lebanon Catholic. The most noteworthy victory of the last six games was that over Johnstown Catholic, which had won the Catholic State Championship at Xvilliamsport during the I939-I94O season. The champions had the same team back that played last year, but our Vikings defeated them by a 40-37 score. The team Hnished with the impressive record of eighteen wins and seven losses. The Vikings scored 1074 points as compared to 896 for their opponents. Richard McGee led the assault with 289 points closely followed by Bill Kober and Bobby Schwab with 177 and 172 respectively. This year's team will lose only two starting men-Bill Kober and john W'ieder. Their names will go down in tribute in the sport annals of the Viking crew. 63 1-Iii:-n , ,. From this group of enthusiasts, the track varsity was picked. The Seniors Won the meet with a total of 32 points largely through the efforts of Robert Wolf and John Hamilton Who took four firsts and four second places respectively. The Juniors placed second with 25 points and the Sophomores third with 23 points. The outstanding point-maker for the Juniors was John Miklos who placed first in the IOO-, 220-, and 440-yard runs. The league was played in a round robin fashion, that is, each team played the other at least once. The team emerging victoriously claimed the laurels. This year the honor was captured by the team representing Section I B, cap- tained by Mary Jane Schmoyer. Mary Jane holds first scoring honors with fifty points to her creditg Catherine Walls with twenty-seven points holds second place and Patricia Maynes with sixteen, ranks third. The members of the team pictured above are: Standing: Helen Puchalla, Catherine Walls, Kathleen Wolf, Patricia Maynes, and Mary Stumpf. Kneeling: Alice Chudy, Eleanor Suppan, and Mary Jane Schmoyer, captain. Their record shows that they have won six games and lost one. 66 ara! .xgfdzeficri 5.4 M INTRAMURAL competition among the girls is not only found in basketball but also in soft ball. Soft ball seems to rank second as the favorite sport on the intra- mural schedule. The spacious gym is used for this activity since there is no avail- able field near the school. This year found the Senior Girls with the outstanding teams in the league. Hilda Fandl and Emma XValakovitz are clever at the bat. XVe have every reason to expect to find the Senior girls offering keen competition to their opponents during the last two months of the school year, and emerging as champions at the end of the season. vga, rar ALTHOUGH this athletic activity does not offer as keen a competition as basket- ball and soft ball, yet it is a favorite activity among the girls. Each class has its groups of strong teams, and it would be hard to even try to predict the outcome when they meet to compete for honors. It is not a seasonal game but is played at different intervals during the year. Besides the competitive games mentioned above, the girls at Central Catholic take part in soccer, baseball, relay and line games, apparatus Work-mats, horse, and parallel bars-goal-hi, marches, dances, calesthenics and various other activi- ties. 67 I'l1C On fke jucl' jiefc! THIS year, Central Catholic's Viking Track Team has been placed in the field of competition with five other schools in the Valley. Members for the varsity track team were selected after the inter-class meet on April 9. John Miklos, John Hamilton, Otto Jaindl, Herman Jaindl and Bern- ard Mayer have been selected for the various dash events. Our distance runners are Vincent Gerant, William Stenach, John Feichtl, Joseph Fruhwirth, Eugene Kohler, and William Maynes. Robert Wolf, captain of the team leads in field events. Joseph Henry, Walter Tapler, Richard McGee and John Bucha are also our outstanding men in this section. The first interscholastic meet on April If was a quadrangular meet with Al- lentown, Emmaus and South Whitehall. The Vikings carried away only fifteen points, but it gave them the much needed experience for future contests. In the second meet With South Whitehall on April I9 they were more successful. They placed first in five events, and garnered thirty-two points during the entire meet. Robert Wolf and John Hamilton are the only seniors who will be lost to the track team. The greatest blow will be the loss of Captain W'olf, who has been a consistent point getter in all the events. 1 TRACK SCHEDULE April is Vikings, limmaus, Allentown, South VVhitt-hall-'quailrangular meet April lj lnrcr-class inccl April ig-Vikings vs. South Wliitcliall May Vikings vs. lfmmgius May 7 Vikings vs. Ngizam-Ili May 27 Vikings vs. Slatington 68 gaaeda On fde gadedaf .ibiamon THE Vikings began their second year of campaigning in interscholastic baseball competition with a team of hustling ball players.
