After four years ot religious guidance we are convinced that religion is not a series ot burden- sorne do's and f'don'ts but rather something which is practical and inspira- tional. ln addition to the torrnal instruction and discussions in the religion classes, Father is ever ready to answer our many questions, and help us to solve the rnany little problems which daily confront us. l-le airns to send us out into the world as the perfect Catholic Leader, with a thorough knowledge ot our Faith and a training which will enable us to apply this knowledge to present day conditions. With this religious background Central Catholic presents to the State young men and wornen who are outstanding citizens, honest and conscientious in carrying out the spirit ot its statute. History - World History - Problems of Democracy ln comparing the United States of yesterday and today we might well say History repeats itself. Events today seem to tollow a pre-arranged order ot sequence. Read the early history ot our country to see this sequence in startling vividness. Do not our times reflect past history? Then-a struggle tor land and supremacy over conquered peoples: now-a struggle for Wealth and power over the masses. Will man ever be able to go forward Without leaning on the past? Ask the Seniors and luniors, tor they have been discussing these questions every day in the history classes and the varied solutions would prove interest- ing. The Freshmen, too, could add their bit concerning the early history ot mankind for World History has been their big worry for the last ten months. FRANCIS BROWN, '40 WILLIAM BIGGS, '40 Twenty-eight The Cornznercial Department of Central Catholic High School is a l complete unit in itself. The increased enrollment in the school as well as in this department necessitated an expansion program in which the conirnercial equipment was transferred from the A BEALM QF BUSTNESS n.ain lxuildinq to two large, well equipped rooms in the Nerz School building. Here is offered to the luniors and Seniors a complete course in Stenography, Typing and Bookkeeping. Ninety-two students -thirty-two Seniors and sixty luniors fare following this course at the present time. Another innovation this year was the introduc- ing of Bookkeeping into the Sophomore year thus enabling the students to determine in their second year their preference or aptitude for further business training. Practically all who have chosen the commercial course have entered the work wholeheartedly, made commendable progress and are anxiously awaiting the time when they will be fully prepared to apply their skills in the business world. Here, in the fertile garden of Central Catholic High School, grow the Leaders of Tomorrow. Chosen by the students because of some initial distinction, they guide their classmates in all the activities during the course of the year, under the supervision of the homeroom teachers. The rnost outstanding of these officers is the school president, who is chosen by the Faculty because of his integrity, leadership, and scholarship. Next in order are the class president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. ln this body is vested the power of student legislation which is the first step in preparing better citizens to act as future leaders of our country. Flflifjl-flll'fC The Winner in the final contest VOCAL HARMONY On the night of December 18, 1938, Central Catholic High School presented its first Musicale in the school auditorium to a large and appreciative audience. The initial performance of the Glee Club opened with the silver-toned rendition of the poignant chords of Mozart's Gloria , under the skilled direc- tion of Professor Birmelin. l-larmoniously, their voices arose, blending into a beautiful harmony and softly dying away in a lingering Whisper. Following the Twelfth Mass, the audience was thrilled as they listened to the tuneful, fami- liar strains of Strauss' Springtime , which will forever remain as a tribute to the Waltz King. In the Grand Ensemble, the Glee Club joined the Verse Speaking Choir in singing the inspirational Alma Mater and the patriotic Star Spangled Banner. Then only did silence Wave her septor, leaving a heritage of glory for the future members of the Glee Club. MARY QUINN, '41 MARY SEDLACEK, '41 GRACE BROWN, '41 Forty-foz INSTRUMENTAL HARMQNY The Music Festival of December l8 occasioned the dehut of the High School orchestra with an entire classical program. The rustle of music sheets, a moment of silence, the hows are set, nifnlole fingers poised on their instru- ments, the loaton of our director, Mr. Richard Biassictto, is raised and our first Annual Musicale is under way. We are enthralled by the beauty and tran- quility of Tales of Vienna Woods , one of Strauss' riost colorful compositions. Again the rustle of music sheets, again the silence and this time the universal language of music tells us of Egypt in its Qriental splendor, as Verdies' Aida is played. Then, as a fitting close, the orchestra joins in the Alrr.a Maferu and The Star Spangled Banner four Grand Ensemble. Limited as our arches- tra lS 111 the number of instrurrienis, it painted in nligsical color, the afandeur and glory of music fthe language of Heaven.
