The Red Raiders of Central possess a football tradition on the high school level that rivals the spirit of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish. This year's team has continued and added to that tradition. With only two returning starters and a squad consisting primarily of sophomores and juniors, Coach Moynihan was faced with the enormous task of building a completely new team. But with a true manifestation of the indomitable spirit of Central Catholic, he, his staff, and his players formed a football machine that proved more than representative. Co-captain Larry McCarthy switched from half- back and filled the quarterback slot so adequately that he was chosen All-Conference signal caller. And the entire team followed McCarthy's example, ready to face anything and everything that came before them. The record read 3 and 5, but to fully appreciate their efforts we must compare them with the late Grantland Rice's criterion of suc- cess- It matters not that you won or lost, but how you played the game. The 1959 Red Raiders played their hearts out in every game and instilled into the underclassmen in their ranks a spirit that fore- tells only outstanding success for future Central teams. .LM t,f':.-'f . a . Among the freshmen, he is well-known lor his thorough Social Studies course, in which he takes an active interest in his pupils. To all the students, how- ever, he is known simply as Coach Bloynihann-a man whose ability to successfully instruct and arouse his charges on the football field has Jnanilested itsell' in Central's tremendous record over the years. XVitl1 him, Central is a perennial powerhouse in the Catholic Conferenceg without him, our school would lack an integral part of that tradition that has made Central famous. YYY'
