Fran: l have an ideal One of us will write and the rest will tell him what we remember about the different classes we were in. Jim: That's a good ideal l'll do the writing. Don: The sensible way is to start with the freshman year. Joe: 1 remember the first day we entered the schoolyard and Brother joseph Abel read out the names of the boys in each class. I was scared stiff when l was the only boy from my grammar school to be in l-C. . Dick: The same here. It seemed as if ev- eryone in my class knew somone else except me. Fran: Just think of all the boys we know now that we didn't know then. Don: This is a good time to mention the Brothers we had. Most of us had Brothers Al- exander, Thomas, and Paul. Joe: Remember how Brother Paul always threw Dick Habib out of the Civics class. Fran: And Brother Alexander and his daily test in religion. Don: What about Brother. Gilbert and the different clubs he started? We had a lot of fun in that checker club. Dick: None of the boys will forget the time Brother Mike burned his linger trying to get hydrogen to burn. But most of his experiments did really work. Fran: It was during the fall that the new cat. was completed. That certainly was money and time well spent. ' Joe: During our freshman year the Blessed Virgin Sodality held that big dance. l felt pret- ty big, going to thesame dance as the seniors. Dick: Brother Owen's paper drives will never be forgotten. l remember dragging an cartload all the way from South Lawrence, just to get a half holiday. Fran: Let's get on to the second year. Don: We were the first class to use the new building. Remember the two days classes were cancelled because the classrooms were so cold? Joe: The most important events in sopho- more year were the two games with Lawrence High. Don: I'll never forget Brother lVlike's French period. l spent as much time after school as l did in. Dick: Brother Leo really poured the geom- etry homework on, but after l think it over, we really knew our theorems. Fran: l think we should mention something about Brother Cilbert's Latin periods. Most of us had him for Latin during one year. Dick: We forgot to say that Brother joseph Abel was replaced as principal by Brother John Lawrence. Don: Brother Joannes used to scare me with his deep voice. Joe: He still scares me. Don: Let's get on to the third year Fran: We thought that we would be back in the old building .... but ...... Joe: Remember Brother Louis and his out- door English periods? Every time the classes were cold he would take us out into the sun to read poetry. Dick: Don't forget to mention Brother Louis' cooking recipes. Fran: Our basketball team went to Boston and came out third in New England. Joe: O'Brien ran the mile in 4:36 at the N.E.A.A.U. in Lynn. Don:..3-B was famous for. ,lim Degnanfs Latin translations. Fran: Don't forget ,Brother Lawrence's Physics class and Brother Francis' Spanish. Dick: You knowl Brother Francis tried to be a hard boiled teacher but we soon found out what a good egg he was. Joe: Brother Peter really made us learn our Latin homework. Oh those 5000 :word compo- sitionsl Don: Franny English will never forget the time he had to write Why Didn't He Buy the Saturday Evening Post l000 times. - Jim: l'm tired of writing, joe, you write 'about the senior year. Dick It will be easy to write about that. Fran: No history would be complete with- out the arguments between Brother Terence and Dan Donovan. l have yet to find Dan with- out an excuse. Jim: What about St. Pierre and the time the sodium blew up. Don: Also, Griffin and his H 2 5. Dick: Mention Neil Twomey and the rec- ord he made in basketball. Fran: Yes, and the two tourneys the bas- ketball team was in, and the successful season the hockey team had. Don: We'd better not mention the football team: people might ask questions. Jim: Our senior year has been eventful. You can write about Verette and his car. Dick: Also Brother joannes and his com- bination history and lunch periods. Fran: Our baseball team was something to talk about. Don: Mention the basketball banquet, and that the whole team received gold basketballs from the alumni, while the hockey team re- ceived gold hockey sticks. Dick: We could go on forever with these events that are so fresh in our memories, but we haven't any more room. Fran: just mention the Wonderful time we had at our Senior Prom. Joe: And that new building drive: goshl it's too bad that we won't be in school when it is completed. The plans really look good. Fran: Now finish by expressing the sincere gratitude of the class of '47 for the devotion, patience and good example given to us by the Brothers during these past four years. Nlay all of us live up to the ideals and principles they have given us. .Zhe :Realm C'ZZazM, 72066 IDEAL CENTRAL BOY. MOST POPULAR ..... BEST POLITICIAN MOST MOST MOST MOST INFLUENTIAL . . The cessation of hostilities necessitated a change in practically every society in the country, from the Congress of the United States right down to the Alumni Association of Central Catholic. Prior to 1946 the Alumni was a victhn of circumstances. The first graduation classes had hardly started the 'ball rolling when the outbreak of war prompted the en- listment of almost every member. Handicapped in such a manner during the war years, the Alumni was indeed looking forward to the day when it would be able to fulfill its committments without interference. That day has arrived! Now the Alumni is a living and growing body, 800 strong, that is gradually mounting instature here at Central. It has emerged from its cocoon and is busy spinning the web of a solid and unimpeach- able foundation. The business meetings, held every month, have seen each class well rep- resented. The practice of inviting a guest speaker to every meeting was an innovation that increased in popularity as the year progressed. The capacity for work shown by the members spurred the Alumni on to the speedy and successful accomplishment of all their undertakings. T ACTIVITIES First on the year's agenda was a series of dances held in the school cafe- teria. The wholehearted cooperation and faithtul attendance of the Cen- tral students and their friends made these affairs a huge social success. Since most of the members are attending school in widely scattered places there remained the problem of informing them of all the current plans and activities. This task emphasized the great need for a bulletin or paper and lcd to the establishment of the ALUMNUS.,' This monthly publication, the official organ and strongest voice of the Alumni, not only keeps members abreast of events within. the organization, but also relates the ventures and whereabouts of their former classmates. Favorable comments about the paper have poured in from interested readers every- where. A The founding of the HALUMNUSH was not the only step taken in this direction. A big reunion was held during the Christmas holidays, enab- ling many of the boys who were home for the holidays to renew old school ties. In view of the fact that the school Basketball and Hockey teams enjoyed successful seasons, plans were made by the Alumni to recognize the fine work of the two squads. The boys were presented with suitable emblems for their respective sports at a special Sports-Nite dance. The members of the alumni received Communion in a body at St. Mary's Church on May 18, and immediately afterwards the Annual Com- munion Breakfast was held in the school cafeteria. LOOKING AHEAD At the present time the Alumni is busy formulating plans for the most important undertaking in its history- its part in the school drive for the new Auditorium. The members have already demonstrated their enthus- iasm by voting to finance an athletic room in the new building. This room will be dedicated to perpetuate the memory of those members of the Alumni who were killed in Xvorld VVar 2. This has been the most active' and successful year that the Alumni of Central Catholic has ever enjoyed. It was more or less a year of acquaint- ance- a year to acquaint the people of the city with the society- and to acquaint the Alumni with the responsibilities of such an Association. Witli these formalities over, the Alumni can now settle down to render to its Alma Mater whatever services lie within its power. ' THAT ALUMNI TEAM ll Wdgafze fw' w,amen'6 FDL Mrs. Mary I. McMahon XVith the long range view of doing something tangible about the need of the school for a new gynlnasium-classroom building, Brother Nilus last year reorganized the Men's League at Central Catholic. Gathering a group of men who were the nucleus of the newly organized body, he grad- ually formulated plans which blossomed into fruition this year, Elected to the presidency for the year 1947 was Dr. Philip McMahon. Every activity undertaken by the League during the year pointed for the big job which began in the last month of the school year, the Building Fund Drive. Through an unbelievable amount of sac- rifice, and unstinting devoted and difficult work this project was carried to a successful conclu- sion. All of these boys very kindly offered their time, some of them before scool in the morning and others took charge of the library after school hours in the afternoon. Their coopera- tion and helpfulness is greatly appreciated. From an annual fund of 33300, we added a number of desirable books and through the kindness of some of the boys we received others. XVe are grateful also of a gift of a fine set of the Encyclopedia Britannica. All pre-season dope had both clubs slated for top honors in their respective leagues. And at this June Writing both teams are snugly plant- ed in the second division for what looks like the duration. And so it Went with our gridiron heroes during the football season. Coach Hanley had quite a few of his veterans back. There were big Neil Twoniey, Roland Beaudoin, Gene Champagne and other seasoned griddcrs who figured in the successful 1945 season. Backs like Miles Moran, Herve Gallant and Jack 'Connors seemed slated to carry on the touchdown pa- rade of the year before. Recruits were plentiful, over one hundred and thirty boys turning out to try for a berth on-what was supposed to be the team in Central's history. Coach Hanley was back with his two-team system which had proved so practical and so successful the previous year. Yeah! it looked good. And the boys looked good in their pre-season tuneups with Leominster and Lowell High. But then something happened. You can never quite put your 'finger on those things in sports, but injuries crop up, regulars deve- lop trick knees, recruits turn out to be too light or too small, the breaks just don't come and it all adds up to an unsuccessful season. But that's only one side of the picture. A lot of things happen in a ball game which scores and statistics fail to picture in their true light. ' There were a host of thrills and innumerable incidents to make any Centralifan proud of the boys who wore the Red and Blue. At times, both team and individual play were superbg there were moments indeed which helped to make up for the scores which found us on the short end. REMEMBER .... hard-charging CAPTAIN MILES MORAN. J, My V , , CHAMPIONS - 1946-1947 . I3a4ketZLa.ZZ . Brother Leo, our Coach Through the few years of its short history, Central Catholic has created an enviable record on the basketball floor. During this 1946-47 season, however, Central topped all its other performances. Operating in a lea- gue in which every opponent was loaded with talent and fight, we came out on top to take cha-mpionship honors. A glance at the schedule will reveal that most of our games were of the hair-raising, spine tingling va- riety that came right down to the final whistle. The team did get the breaks in some, but in the majority of these contests it was very simply dogged determination and heart that made our breaks for us. VVho will forget those first two wins against St. John's of Concord, each by a margin of a basket, or that sudden death game against St. .lohnis of Danvers, when Myles Moran clinched a 60-58 victory, by an almost impossible over- head shot, or that first Mission game won by a slim margin of a foul shot or those two games with Malden Catholic both of which were in doubt until the last final minutes, .... and so on thru the whole season, they are memories we will not soon forget. As a result of our fine showing during the season with a record of 18 wins and 2 losses, we received invitations to two post season basketball tournaments, the New England Catholic Championships and the Tech Tournament. XVe were the first Catholic school ever to receive an invita- tion to the latter tournament. In the New England Catholic Tournament we came up against a deter- mined Malden Catholic team, out for revenge. In a close, hard fought game they bested us by the margin of one basket. In the Tech Tournament we beat Dedham in the iirst round, but in the semi-final we lost in an overtime match by one point to a determined and strong Boston Latin combine that went on to capture the Class B Cham- pionship. . Going into this sea- son, we had unbroken skein of victories spreadeagling two years. Un- fortunately, we were unable to keep this streak intact, dropping a heart- breaker to Punchard by one point, and this in an overtime. VVe avenged this defeat in our second encounter by a -L2-18 win. Now we have initi- ated a new winning streak which we intend to keep rolling in the years to come. Our final record this year was 21 wins and 1 loss. Most of our wins were moderately large spreads, but there were a few really close ones. XVho will forget that second game against St. Johnts of Concord, when we just sneaked in under the wire in the final seconds with a one point win. h A Our varsity has always depended on its Junior Varsity for new materi- al. Ended-aff Back in early spring, there was an announce- ment over the loudspeakers .... All candidates for the Baseball team report for. practice this af- ternoon after class. At that time prospects looked very promising for a successful season. Actually in the pre-season books we were conced- ed the Catholic League title. In a way this was an unwarranted prediction, since we had only Myles Moran and Joe Hackney, and the veteran hurlers, Beland, York and Gallant returning from last year's varsity. Wle filled in the vacant spots in the infield with Ray Leslie, a reliable little hall player at short stop, and George Lane at the 'keystone sack. Dan Donovan took over at first base and J oe Hackney became our regular at the hot spot. Our outfielders reading from left to right were Billy Delaney, who patrolled the Tk N I sun gardens, Joe Messina, center, and Ted lllorris, right. The batteries usually found Myles Moran, our veteran receiver ,handling the slants of York, Beland, Gallant, or a very promising newcomer, George Lefebvre. Thus our ball club shaped up. As the season slowly unfolded it became more and more apparent that the prophets were wrong. Our first few games were on the debit side of the ledger, marked by poor hitting and erratic fielding. As the season pro- gressed most of the wrinkles in our fielding were ironed out but the hit- ting of the team was never at the right time. Before we knew it we were in the hogs of a losing streak. Bro. Linus, our coach, tried everything to bring us out of it, but by the time we hit the win column, it was too late to do anything in league competition. It-was apparent that our only hope to salvage the season was to beat Lawrence High in our inaugural of the city series. Billy York was chosen as our moundsman in the first game of the series. He locked horns with Dick Kowalski, the Lawrence ace. The game was a good one to watch, though marred in one or two places by errors. Billy turned in a masterful job, but Lawrence edged us out in the last of the ninth, tallying a ru11 to beat us 3 to 2. In the second meeting of the series the same two pitchers started . Again, after pitching an extremely tine game, Billy York was bested by Dick Kowalski. 'YVe started a rally in the ninth inning of this second game that might have developed into something big. Vxlith the score 7 to +1 in favor of Lawrence, we filled the bases with one out and Ray Leslie and Myles Moran coming up. Kowalski proved his mettle by strik- ing out Leslie and forcing Myles to top a grounder to the third baseman. Thus we dropped our first two encounters to the boys in the Blue and Wliite. So also ended our 1947 baseball season. The boys on the team fought hard all seasong they never gave up hope in any ball game until the last man was out in the ninthg but that unpredictable X factor, the breaks did not favor us. Hopefully we look forward, with those famous words in our hearts- NVait till next year ......
