1840-The MISSION, founded in 1718 to give strength - Heavenly, physical, lies in ruins as evidence ot that oth- er strength it imparted- strength ot patriotism. .,g.:v'lsf gk, - 1867-The MISSION no longer gives or symbolizes Heaven- ly strength. Its use as a gov- ernment warehouse contin- ues, however, its tunction ot giving physical and patriotic strength. Indicative, in its way, of the spirit ot the times -substitution of the material for the spiritual. 1873-The MISSION no longer imparts Heavenly or patriotic strength but renders physical strength as foundation for a wholesale Grocery and Gen- eral Merchandise building. Materialism r e p 1 a c e s the Spiritual. 1894-The MISSION continues as cr symbol ot physical strength, now as a police sta- tion. Spiritual strength vague- ly appears since enforcement ot Civil law is but the torce- lul complying with the Spl- - ritual law-the Ten Com- lf ' W mandments. E 1904-The MISSION is still sub- ject to the advance of ma- terialism. The Saint Louis Fair, greatest show of the day flouts the calm serenity of the MISSION, symbol of Heavenly strength.
