VARSITY I 4 An invaluable part of the athletic staff, Charles Necke and Pat Perkins put final touches on close of '49-'50 sports season. 9 . , 'al ' Q fl J 1 f , 14 5 ,VW ' ' :SY 7 'tid 5 f 9 P. L x .'5 ,-,,, After losing their non-league games and their first two league starts, our defending champions surged uphill for a 'first-place tie with St. Ed's. Most of this was due to steady pitching and the home-run clouting of Stan Mosel who, incidentally, hit a fat .552 average for the league season. Central lost its opening games to Concordia and San Marcos, 8-3 and 6-5 respectively. With deter- mined effort Centralites came back to sweep the four remaining games from St. Ed's, San Marcos, and Con- cordia by scores of 7-3, I4-0, 4-3, and IO-5, respectively. Directed by Bro. Albert Stein, six trosh teams competed for the intramural crown. Room I04 emerged as winner after six weeks of fierce competition. Sparked by the pitching of J. Newman and the batting of J. Allison and J. Retclitf, the champs won 9 while losing only 2. Room IOS with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses was runner-up. Not to be outdone by their elder schoolmates the grades presented a more interesting display of softball skill with Bro. John Ross as faculty moderator. Room 3I0 A with 8 wins and no losses edged out room 3I4 A whose record was 7 wins against one setback. Outstanding players were: C. Cazeres and R. Gomez. The Bexar County Softball Tournament held May 6, found two Central Grade School teams competing with eight other teams. The B team coached by Bro. H. Jan- son, by virtue of a win over South San, reached the finals where they lost to St. Anthony's. The C team under Bro. G. Naeger also reached the finals as a result of trouncing Mt. Sacred Heart, but met with the same result. , , C TEAM, FRONT ROW, l. fo r. J. Braun, Mgr., C, Keller, R Scllulfze, J. Zeller, V. Wilson, E. Kanning, R. Woodcoclr, C. Royce BACK ROW, l. +o r.: S.
