Youth in the greeness of years does not choose its own prep- arationg it accepts the varied activities of high school life - religious, intellectual, physical and social -- as its preparation for life. Repeatedly, we have heard his voice raised in the interest of a Christian peace, and in a crusade to extend to all classes alike the prin- ciples of iustice and charity. We are privileged to follow his wise and courageous leadership. We students have been fortunate to study under the sterling guidance of Monsignor Morkovsky. As Superintendent of the Catholic schools of this diocese, he has given us an efficient educational system. I TO THE GRADUATES: Your preparation for the future is not completed by your graduation - your whole life is a preparation. No high school training should be an end in itself. A diploma is worth iust as much as you put into earning it. High school days should be stepping stones to greater development, to fuller living. The extent to which you live a fuller life will depend increasingly more on yourself and less on others. The clarity of your ideal, the tenacity with which you hold to your principles, the assiduous cultivation of good habits will build in you a strong, good character which in turn will assure you of success. Your responsibilities now are greater than last year, than four years ago, they will continue to grow. You have had exceptional opportunities, and now your Church, your Country, the world at large looks to you for future leadership. Fair play, social iustice, charity depend on you to throw your full weight on the side of God- and those who work for the betterment ofa strife-stricken world. Keep close to God through your religion. One of the habits which should be part of you as a Catholic young man is weekly contact with your Guide, Christ in the Eucharist, and a daily prayer to Mary, your Mother. Your future is in your hands - NOW. Sincerely yours in J.M.J., Bro. Louis J. Scherer, S.M. .t. OUR VICE-PRINCIPAL AND REGISTRAR ' nX,,........-., A,x-NL i I BRO. THEODORE HOEFFKEN, S.M . . IN OUR PREPARATION FOR THE FUTURE DEDICATION The year 1947 marks an important step in the lives of this year's graduates, but it is even more important to one of the fac- ulty at Central. It was twenty-five years ago that our Vice-Principal and Registrar made his vows as a religious in the Society of Mary. As a token of our respect and admiration of those who devote their lives to the service of God and Mary, we dedi- cate the T947 FANG to Bro. Theodore, on the occasion of his Silver Jubilee as a Marianist. Chkgfd ygh btBth Th th I wi o smie. This live-wire class of seven- teen has taken the lead in all activities. Specifically l'IB led the junior division in the Scholarship Drive, the Paper Drive, and the FANG Subscription Drive. In athletics Cyril Stark, Bill Corcoran, and Jack Layer displayed noteable ability on the 'football team. Dick Perez as one of the cheerleaders, was very active in calling a display of school spirit at all the athletic contests. Jesse Aleman competed in the annual boxing program. Jerry Nowicki re- presented the class in the bowling league. Bill Corcoran and Dick Perez are valuable members of the school band. Scholastically, 'llB is represented on the honor roll for the -year by Billy Cervenka, Albert Fuessel, and Jerry Nowicki. As for athletics we all flocked to the football and basketball games as ardent Centralite root- ers. Our home room was also very proud to contribute two good regular varsity football players in Loef and Molina who was named on the Little All Stars of 1946. We were pugilistic- ally minded and supported the boxing program. For musical interpretations one could consult our musician, Claude Marty. The Scholarship Drive during November was a success for our home room as we all got our free Day. During Lent, Mission Collection Fund found our class among the leaders of the school. Class Officers were as follows: Tommy Loef, President, Frankie Frank, Vice- president, Joe Alvarez, secretary, Paul Mo- lina, Treasurer, and Gene Toudouze, class Junior D did little to make itself an outstand- ing class in the school. There were, however, a few bright spots. For instance, Art Reimers led the Juniors in the paper drive. Homer Martinez and Cole Kivlin were in the B football team and Bennie Purdom on the varsity eleven. Martinez also made Central's boxing team in the Golden Glove tourney. Larry Seargeant represented the class on the rifle team. Your eighth grade graduation is important only because it is a step to something higher. You have a good start, now you must carry on through high school-and perhaps through college-to suc'cess. Here at Central you have had a Catholic education. That is a big break, because it gives you sound ideas about God and what is good. These ideas are the foundation upon which you can build a strong character and a good Christian lite. A Catholic education is a privilege. ln many cases it has been provided by your Fathers and Mothers through great sacirfice. Show that you are grateful to your parents and teachers. Trial on the C Team. J. McCormick also represented the class on the Midget Basketball Team, and R. Guzman was a regular on the undefeated C Team. Eight B also won the grade school intra- mural basketball tournament undefeated. Gilbert Romo reached the finals in the San Antonio Golden Gloves Tournament. Steve Alblinger led the Eighth Graders in the Paper Drive, in which the class also made over IOOWJ. In our class arithmetic tournament, R. Cortez emerged champion with W. Collins runner-up. G. Mulroy took the consolation round. These are a few of the pleasant memories that the 1947 class of 8B will cherish throughout their high school career and in the years to come. Homeroom teacher: Bro. The entire year was marked by an eager participation in the various activities offered the grade school classes at Central. During the course of the year the 8C roster changed considerably, reaching a high of thirty-five members at one time and falling to a low ot twenty-eight. Despite the changing population, an at- mosphere of cheertulnesss blended with steady work prevailed. Besides the courses taught by the titular teacher, Bro. Edward Busch taught History and coached the notable spelling team, while Bro. George Naeger taught Spanish. A Honor roll students were: Leonard Tschirhart, Frank Masch, Teddy Graham, Milton Staudt, Richard O'Neill, Joe Schott, David Farias and Gilbert Acosta. Representing this outstanding homeroom were: Leonard Tschirhart, President, Frank Masch, Secretary, Luis Martinez, Treasurer, and Peter Koch in the double role of Vice-President and Class Representative. . To the rhythm of Types One, Two and Three, Arithmetic has become, through the efforts of Brother Ralph, almost a second nature. Brother Albert corrected our faulty grammar, and Bro. This menu of activities provides religious principles and ideals to steel the will, varied intellectual and cultural activities to broaden the mind, physical activites to build the body and social activities to develop the Christian social grace necessary for successful life wth others. BOWLING Keeping in line with the Central-first sport tradition, bowling was added to the list of activities during the past year. With Quintin Marlow taking the lead in preliminary work, it was not long until the league was entered as a member of the American High School Bowling Congress. Under its rules an eight-team league was organized. The two winnng teams bowled in the National Tour- nament in April, in which Team One composed of Leonard Emge, Paul Brinkman, Ken Herzig, Louis Montanio and Art Troilo, placed eighth among the 425 high school teams competing. In the regular season's play, Team Five, composed of Quintin Mar- low, Bob Cushman, Jack Harper, Marshall Robalin and Bob Zuercher, won the school championship. And the cause of that pride was an organization, a group of hard-working, talented Centralites -the Military Band. Keeping up Central's tradition of cooperation, participating in parades, patriotic and religious, the Central Band has garnered many trophies. Guiding the varied talent of the members were: Lt. Ernest Fischer, band director, Cadet Lt, Charles Barberio, drum major, and Bro. Herbert Janson, moderator. . . . SOCIAL ACTIVITIES A iuke box special but everyone seems to enjoy it. A 9 up oi' sen s sit this one out. There are times at Central when the chalk dust settles and the bookmarlgs do their work. Then, leaving aside the daily grind of classes, we don our party clothes and glide to the sweet music of the Cavaliers - or maybe the iuke box. Once a month the gym ceased to echo the shrill cries of the rooters, and then, sedately bedecked with vari-colored crepe paper, it was transformd into a ballroom. The rumble of two teams racing down the floor, the roar of an excited crowd, was suddenly changed to the silent swish of a lassie's evening dress, or the stroll of the dancers, and then rough, athletic Centralites became true Southern gentlemen. These, and many other social affairs, formed the last and most enioyble part of our preparation for the future. Rating high in our collection of school memories, we hope to recall these events often in years to come. had 'V Here the photographer catches a group 01 Centralites and their dates enjoying the sof' music at the Football Dance. We often think of the Mothers only a chaperons at the dances, but here we fini them gathered about the refreshment tabl serving cake and ice cream to Centralitf and their dates. MOTHERS' CLUB Mom wasnlt content to bundle up her son and send him off to school. and then wait for him to come home again to raid the ice box. Feeling that she could help care for him at school, Mom came right along to see that her son got the best of everything. Maybe it wasnit as apparent as all that, but true enough, she was there. Sometimes she was serving First Friday breakfast, or helping the Fathers' Club serve that big barbecue. Other times she was spon- soring a bingo party, or maybe chaperoning a Central dance. The Seniors can well remember Mom for giving them that delicious Senior Banquet. Yes. behind the breakfasts, the sup- pers, the banquets, or whatever it was, Mom was at Central helping her son. l l STANDING: Mrs. L. J. Dad came out of the home and into Central to help him. Many fathers showing that loyalty and spirit instilled in them at old St. Mary's Academy were out front again helping Central in every way. That big barbecue that brought Central athletes a sleek, sliiney bus, that Father-Son Banquet where Dad was your date, the Scholarship Drive that gave many a boy a chance to attend Cen- tral, were only a few of the projects accomplished by the Fathers, Club. Wforking hard to make their sons chips off the old block, the Dads of Central have for sixteen years helped in every way to better our school, and the school of our children when we com- pose the membership of the Central Fathers' Club. THE PRCM The afternoon of April 18 was much more exciting than the usual routine of school. Centralites dashed like mad in and out of the rooms, and on their lips were the usual phrases before a dance . . . Whom are you taking? . . What kind of flower did you get? To the tune of all the chatter, dodging and bumping in the hallways, the Junior dance committee was making last minute preparations. Of course, everyone knew the why of all the excitement. A dance, surely, but the biggest dance of the year . . .The Junior-Senior Prom. That night, the air of excitement cooled, and a quiet, smooth, crowd of Centralites gathered to dance to rhythm of Kotsie Keirh's orchestra.
