Always he has given us an inspiring ex-- ample of that true Catholic leader- ship which we must carry with us throughout life. Pope Pius Xll has given more to the cause of peace than any other living man. He has en- listed every fibre of his genius for diplomacy to further peace and make the word ot the Vat- ican respected throughout the world. Dedication Two men look out through the same bars: One sees the mudi and one the stars. -Robert Louis Stevenson In the damp, soul-stifling closeness of war, life is very difficult to view in proper perspective. Human feelings run the whole gamut, from murky dispair to starry self-sacrifice and idealism. We graduates are not trying to fool ourselvesp we know what we're stepping into when we doft our caps and gowns. But we believe in keeping our eyes as well as our chins up. We are looking to the stars. lt is in such a spirit that we dedicate the 1945 Butoneer to twenty-three gold-star heroes who trudged long through murk and misery and mud without ever looking at it. The wonderful in- spiration and significance of their lives--and their deaths-is that each of them kept his eyes always on a star and in doing so became one. M ,X , ., -watt: AJW 1 T21 ffz ' -,Qi Aw. Often we tried to tell ourselves that it would bring no regrets. But now that it's all over, now when we take off our cap and gown and tuck our diploma away securely in some drawer, we begin to think, to dream-and to regret. Our memories of the past four years are rosy-tinged. We enjoyed those years, and we'll miss them now. . We'll miss the things each of us knew: classes and teachers, after-school sessions in PEP or ANNUAL office, plays and musicales, march-rhythmed military drill and sweet measured dance steps, tense action on playing fields, and those quiet moments in chapel that linked all of these in the grand pattern of living which we have iust finished tracing. The relig- ious order which he founded to save France after the French Revolution still carries on the religious and educational work to which he dedicated his life. Central sodalists knew his Bordeaux so- dality as the model of their own. We respect and revere him as an apostle, a model, a great man, a saint. The Chapel In the chapel we found a Catholic core and inspiration for every school activity. In its dark-varnished pews we knelt and prayed, sometimes long, more often briefly. We dropped in there before a tough exam or a hard game, or just to dash off a Hail Mary between classes. There we heard Mass, went to confession, received Communion. There, somehow, we got a bit clearer on the things that count in life, and straightened out our personal problems with a Friend we knew and trusted and loved. l f'7' Sodality Ax jm'.vi1l1'1z1' of flu' Srnior Smlulily, Frm! Sodality groups were organ- ized in the homeroom classes, with periodic centralized di- vision meetings. The Sodality of the Sophomore division, un- der Brother Francis Singler, seemed to thrive best under the new organization. Sodality Activities The annual retreat was held at Cen- tral beginning December 5, 1944. It gave the students a chance to give serious thought to their spiritual life. Father Pieper, in conducting the re- treat, gave the students practical ad- vice on how to live in accordance with th e principles advocated by Christ, their Model. Shortly before the Christmas holidays the Sodality conducted a very suc- cessful food drive. With the coopera- tion of the entire student body a small truckload of food was collected and donated to the poor of the city. In honor of Chaminade day, January 22, the sodality presented a pageant depicting the growth of the Society of Mary from its foundation in Sara- gossa, Spain, to the present time at Central Catholic High in San Antonio. The sodality bulletin board keeps the student body informed on all special religious feasts and holidays. It also carries the Legion of Decency classifi- cation of the movies showing at the local theaters. In order to get a clear picture of the religious life and manner of thinking of the average Central student the Sodality issued two questionnaires during the year. The first requested the student's impressions on various subiects related to marriage. The sec- ond questionnaire dealt with student participation in parish youth activities. The Cenlral Pep stepped out this year as a streamlined, pun-bedecked sheet, popularly appealing to the reading eye of Central students- ll really top-notch school paper, even if it did take some cracks at the annual. Student opinion judged this to be one of the best Pep years ever because of the paper's modern style and personal touch. The edie tors didn't eat Wliegities or take One-A-Day vitamins, but they were on the ball with plenty of Prjl. Few students pay much atten- tion to the staff box in the upper left-hand corner of the second page of the Pep, but those who did noticed a change of Faculty advisers in this year's fourth issue. Brother W'agner, who had guided the Pep during the first semester, was ex- iled to the Annual room. Brother Roy Cherrier stepped in for the last two issues. Much of the credit for the Pep this year goes to these two faculty advisers whose patient guidance crowned the paper with five successful issulfs. Play director Brother Frank Bischof and Sceneryman Brother Edward Busch give tootlight facials to Bob Jaeckle, Allen Jennings, Art Byall and Charlie Norbery. If there is anything more unusual than a guardian angel's en- cumbering himself with a physique, it is his willingness to be represented on the stage. That, for one reason, is why this year's senior production, Career Angel, was so astonish- ingly unusual. ln a radical departure from conventional high-collar religious drama senior boardwalkers this year dropped the seraphic formalities commonly attributed to guardian angels-wings, halo and faultless grammar-to bring Central audiences one of the most warmly human laugh-packed plays ever staged here. Credit for the outstanding performance goes to many. Allen Jennings in the lead role of Brother Seraphim turned in a top- notch performance. Bob Jaeckle filled the title role of the wisecracking Angel Guardian as well as he did the seraph's flowing white robes. Brother Fidelis, the ledger book incar- nate in brown robes, came to life with Phil Bauman's inter- pretation. Artie Byall and Fred Fernandez gave sincerely human portrayals of the other monks of Bosco lnstitute's fac- ulty. Ernest DeWinne was a most debonair villain. A group of other Seniors easily turned in a completely true-to-nature reproduction of the ball-playing, ghost-chasing, comicbook- reading Bosco studentbody. A large measure of credit is due to Brother Frank Bischof, di- rector and coach, who brought the play to a peak perform- ance through more than a month of hard-driving daily re- hearsals. Other orchids go to behind-the-scenes men Charles Eckert, George Molteni, Buel Pearson and Jesse Poston, who did a big and most necessary iob with the scenery, sound effects and lighting. Cox and A. R. Marlow, reserve officers in the United States Army. The unit at this time while being officially recognized by the Army was not under the leadership of officers supplied by the Army. During the first year of its existence the unit marched in the Battle of Flowers parade in the honor position of Queen's escort. The rifle team won the city championship. The 1933-34 officers were prepared for their posi- tions by attending officers' camp at Camp Comal, New Braunfels. An officers' club was formed, followed soon by a non-coms club. In the spring field maneuvers were staged against the battalion of St. Mary's University. Again this year the rifle team won the city championship. At federal inspection the unit received a rating of excellent. In September 1935 the War Department established a Junior ROTC unit at Central and de- tailed Maior John E. Maher of the U. S. Cavalry to act as Professor of Military Science and Tactics. His assistant was Lieutenant O. T. Lyon. Under their guidance the unit progressed far, especially in the line of military theory. In T937 the Junior unit again showed a marked improvement and the general rating was raised from satisfactory to excellent. In T938 the military staff was supplemented by Sergeant T. E. New- man. General Breeze visited the school and a review was staged in his honor. The members of the unit in recognition of their fine showing in the inspection were authorized to wear a red star on their uniforms. Central was then classified as an Honor School. Since that time the unit has consistently maintained an excellent rating. The unit has been commanded over the years by Lieutenant Colonel Albert Tucker, Lieutenant Colonel H. E. Featherstone, Lieutenant Colonel J. B. Wise and Captain John W. Gaume. Captain John W. Gaume, then a Lieutenant, arrived from Camp Maxey, Texas, at the opening of the T942- 43 school term. A graduate of New Mexico A. 8. M., he had been previously stationed at Oklahoma A. 8. M. as assistant professor of Military Science and Tactics. During his first year at Central, the school's military unit earned the highest rating it had ever received in the annual Federal Inspection. At the beginning of this year, Captain Gaume received the promotion to his present rank, and with an enlarged unit began another year of work for the coveted Excel- lent rating. Now, as the year closes, word has been received from headquarters of the Eighth Service Com- CAPTAIN JOHN W- GAUME mand in Dallas that Captain Gaume is being transferred Professor Military Science to active duty on the fighting front, and will be replaced and Tactics by Captain Stuart McCallum. Team No. l placed eleventh and Team No. 2 emerged twenty-second in the annual Hearst match. Only San Antonio team to place higher was Thomas Jefferson High School, which was ninth. Participating in the eighth Service Command Intercollegiate match for the first time, Central placed seventh to get into the finals of the National Intercollegiate match. The team was ranked in San Antonio only by the San Antonio Vocational and Technical team, which placed fourth. In the national firings, however, Central's riflemen outshot Tech, winning forty-ninth place among the country's best teams. Tech placed fifty-first. Sgt. Tommy Smith was high scorer for both the Hearst and Service command matches, while Captain Louis Mosel sighted best in the National ln-- tercollegicte match. First Lieutenant Nick Rabke was team captain. ln city competition, Central defeated Brackenridge in a match on our range by a score of 836 to 785. Field Day, with its strenuous company, platoon, squad, and individual competition climaxed the year's exacting three-day-per-week routine of drill and maneuver. Brigadier General J. A. Porter, commanding general of Fort Sam Houston, was chief re- viewing officer. Judges of the competition were Lieutenant Colonel Millard Butcher, In- fantry, Captain A. L. Walker, Cavalry, and Captain Philip Spillers, Military Intelligence The first Battalion demonstrated rifle calisth enics. It was the showdown, Federal Inspection. The exercises opened with ceremonial parade and review. Companis A, B. F and the Band were inspected by Colonal B. H. Coiner, chief inspecting officer and director of the army specialized training division of the Eighth Command. Maior Garth B. Haddock, assistant to Colonel Coiner, inspected Companies C, D, and E. Colonel Coiner was accompanied in his inspection by Captain J. W. Gaume, Brother Louis Scherer, Miss Nina Krueger, ROTC Sponsor, Cadet Colonel John Weaver and other cadet officers. The second part of the program included squad and platoon drill, demonstrated by Com- pany A, company calisthenics by Company C and extended order by Company B. The second Battalion went through battalion calisthenics. As yet no official report has been received from Dallas, headquarters of the Eighth Service Command, though Colonel Coiner after the inspection stated that Central's ceremonial parade and review was one of the best high school exhibitions he has witnessed. The Balld When Central's band sounded the first tentative notes of its career three years ago, it was the energetic 'baton of Lieut. Ernest J. Fischer that beat out the rhythm. That baton has been flashing over a steadily improving band ever since, as applauding fans at games and assemblies, and judges at music contests have often attested. For thirty-seven years Lieut. Fischer's baton rapped out ready signals to outstanding army bands in Europe, America and .the Philippines. It waved over the famous Philippine Scout Band at Theo- dore Roosevelt's inauguration and at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1903, and on a nation-wide hook- up over station WLW for several years. Only twice was it laid aside: during the Spanish- Amari-- can War and during World War I, when musicians put away their instruments and shouldered stretchers for front-line service. Now Lieut. Fischer's olive-drab blouse sports a medal of honor from the Philippine Commonwealth and a Silver Star citation for gallantry in four World War l campaigns, as well as three campaign ribbons. Since its retirement from army service in 1939, the Lieutenant's much-traveled baton has been leading high school bands and drum and bugle corps in some eight San Antonio schools. To Central, it has been the flickering beacon leading to a goal of top-flight music. TRUMPETS: C. Eckert, D. Stigall, J. Watts, C. Barberio, M. Plunkett, R. Enderle, D. Henckel, L. Bulwer, J. U The Fathers' Club entered its l3th year this year, but-well the fathers aren't superstitious. Nor do they think it's bad luck to cast lots, for the turkey raffle drive, sponsored by the Fathers, was the biggest, best, most beneficial ever. The Father-Son Banquet, held this year in the gymnasium, was crowned with sumptuous success, bringing together the fathers, their sons and the teachers of Central for the annual event. Biggest contribution to the school was the second annual barbecue held at Pablo's Grove May 6, which the hard-working fathers, assisted by the Mothers' Club, brought to a Th C t l ' en'o in the use of the new third floor as the result of last successful conclusion. is year en ra is I y g year's Pa-Ma-sponsored barbecue, next year Central Buttons will purr away to Galveston, Laredo and Del Rio in a sleek, new 48-passenger bus, purchased with the proceeds from this year's event. Thus the fathers have shown their continued loyalty and support to the school, its students and its teachers. OFFICERS: PRESIDENT: Mr. C. De Winne VICE PRESIDENTS: Mr. P. H. Green Mr. F. Mothers Among the more prominent works they have undertaken have been the First Friday breakfast, the furnishing of the band room, and the senior banquet. Bingo parties, the December chicken dinner, and serving at the Father-Son Banquet also rank high on their list of accomplishments. It has been a busy year for the Mothers' Club, and especially busy the last few days of school what with ' d th r mmar rades s onsoring the senior banquet, senior breakfast, the athletic picnic an e g a g P graduation breakfast. The Ma's also lent a much-needed helping hand in organizing and serving at the Pablo's Grove barbecue. donating of shades for the third floor, Dynamic generator of such record accomplishment was a series of well- organized and always interesting monthly meetings. Meeting in the School library or auditorium, las pictured at rightj the Mothers every first Friday spent an hour or two planning school projects before gathering in the school cafeteria for a social or party. An ever-increasing attendance at these meetings presages an even longer and more colorful list of ac- complishments next year. Life at Central isn't all a stuffy maze of blackboards and algebra books. There comes a time when the bespeckled or befreckled Central bookworm must shake off the weary bur- dens of study and ask his maiden to trip the light fantastic at the Central gym. Thus it often happened this year that Central hallways, hourly rumbling with the change-of- course rush, heard the stroll of dancers, the swish of evening dresses and the melodies of an orchestra or iuke box. The school sponsored tour dances during the school year. Central's gridiron heroes were honored November 24 with the annual Thanksgiving dance when pigskin pitchers and their Mollys danced away a pleasant evening to the music of the luke box. Cadets from Privates to bar-bedecked Colonels paraded beneath the red, white and blue streamers with their dates on January 19, when over T50 couples danced at the Military Ball. Miss Nina Krueger was honored as Military Sweetheart. Music for the annual event was furnished by Jimmy Klein's orchestra. l Thr' fun.'m'-spwzsorcd H 0 M 0 r 1' 4' Dana' zlrrw tl gyzzz-jzackrrl frozufl of jiuing rzllrjnlrx fo fbosz' flu' Q1u'c'u 111111 Zzvr mnrt for tba junior-Svnior prom, fbi' lax! big social uvwzl of flu' xrlmol bymr. One of the old teachers that returning grads most often inquire about, Brother Joe is well on his way to becoming a Central legend, if anything as ener- getic as Brother .loe can ever be relegated to the staid dignity of legend. Central's wide program of sports-for-everyone is his work, and it is a work to be proud of. Only Brother Joe is always too busy on plans for new and better sports programs to bother about shin- ing up old laurels. Probably the outstanding leaf in the 1944-'45 laurel crown is the boxing tourna- ment, an outstanding success this year. But we think that we will longest remember Bro. Joe for the unending patience and tireless labor that gave any Central student willing to stretch his muscles a chance to participate in an organized sports pro- gram, with good equipment unstintingly furnished. Go see Brother Joe, is a byword when Centralites think of sports. f ncentive l Adolph Montemayor Marlin Plunkett Tim Austin Three little men who sang, s h o ii- t e rl aml flipped their way into rx top no t e h record for school loyalty anal spirit. They were always right there in front, giving their t i nz e, deflating their lungs and raslbing their throats to stir up enthusiasm in the stantls and to cheer the Buttons through the games. Achievement Keeping pace with a record enrollment, Central's sports program has this year definitely been on the up. Early in the sports season, Central's But- ton gridders brought home three victories-not a championship record, but better than the year be- fore. Our basketball team, though perhaps not quite up to last year's, was far better than average, and, with a good number of underclassmen, shows promise for a top-notch team during the next two years. Boxing's leaps-and-bounds advance was marked by a much bigger tournament this year, 700 contestants. The tennis tournament drew 55 contestants. A start was made in track. And Cen- ral entered a baseball team in league games for the first time in its history. So, looking over the past year's sports program, Central definitely has bettered its record. The old sports have been faster, decidedly on the up. And the new sports mean that something's stirring, that our sports program isn't in a rut, that, given time and a steadily increasing student interest, Central will really go places and have an outstanding reputation in sports here in San Antonio. Even at that, our gym speedsters had a definitely better-than-average record. And the showing of underclassmen on the team promises well for '45-'46. When Brother John Haug, varsity coach, began practice sessions last December, only three vet- erans were there around which to build a team. But hard work, long practice and steady improve- ment produced a record which will bear little criti- cism. If you don't believe us, just take a look at the record on the next page. They consistently take themselves and their play- ing seriously, and force their opponents to look at them in the same light. No wonder then that they walked away with practically all the top honors in their league. Three of the four teams, B . C and Midgets, won the championship in their divisions in the Bexar County Junior League. And the A team won a close second place. B TEAM Coach: Brotlrrr Ray Sobm. Co-Captains: A. Graxxl amz' N. Wrisx- lw, Vvllman Boxing From the opening round of the eliminations the 1945 boxing tournament was a top-flight, high-calibre show with action and speed and skill in plenty. Fighters had had unusual opportunities for training and instruction previous to the tournament, not to mention chances to see some of the world's best boxers in training in Central's ring during most of the year, and a large crowd of Centralites took the chance to push leather into other fellows' faces and take a bit of leather themselves. Semi-finals and finals saw a large crowd of spectators, notably a group of furloughing servicemen grads, who cheered rousingly through a long sched- ule of 32 bouts in the semi-finals, and l8 the following night. The gloves, punching bag, boxing trunks and striking bag have been put away until next year, when memories of this year's outstanding tournament will bring out another crowd of fisticuff artists, to make the gym echo once more to the thump of leather mitts and the wild cheers of a boxing-night crowd. lt's a long list, but everyone of these boys deserves an honorable mention.
