Joseph Lanfer in his capacity of Athletic Director has seen to it that all the support and cooperation possible was given the varsity coaches. Furthermore, in his handling of the minor team schedules, he has assured the Button football and basketball varsities a sufficient number of recruits to fill the vacancies created by graduation. N o doubt, no one in the history of Central has done as much to further the participation in athletics for the students, nor has anyone done as much to further the intramural activities as has done Bro. Joseph. The minor team coaching staff he selected this past season has netted the school 5 championships: one in B football in the Bexar County League and 4 in basketball in the same league. In closing the athletic year at Central, the school can look forward with confidence to a successful 1944 athletic season. Assisting Bro. Lanfer was Captain Floyd Dean, all-American back from Iowa, who handled the varsity football squad. Introducing a new system and shift the team was handicapped in its initial games, but tough competition has seasoned the returning lettermen for a banner year in '44. On the hardwood floor, Father Alphonse Piekarski has given Central a good year, one that could have been more successful if injuries had not interfered in the beginning of the season. Out of a small squad, small in numbers and stature, the Button five turned out to be the fastest quintet in the city, since it had to have speed to counteract the height advantage all its opponents had. Next season should be the season for Central, if the minor team prospects live up to expectations. BRO. JOSEPH BRANDMEIER, S.M. Bro. Brandmeier's ability as a coach is clearly illustrated in his team's bright rec- ord of seven victories out of nine starts. Clearing the mysteries of football out of his players' minds, he has given a big boost to future BH and varsity gridders. BRO. WARNER ROHRBACH, S.M. BRO. THOMAS HELM, S.M. Bro. Thomas' midgets met with a rather unsuccessful campaign but the training the boys of his team received will go far in establishing a berth for them on Central's future teams. In preparing players for future positions on the Varsity, Bro. Warner not only gave his team a thorough training but also de- veloped them into a winning club. The rec- ord these boys have made make it look promising for next year's Varsity. ds the mi htv midget bas BRO. JAMES PIEPER, S.M. Starting with a small and entirely new group of players, Bro. James drilled into them the fundamentals so well that they won the B.C.J.C. championship. Bro. James' work will go far in maintaining basketball supremacy at Central. BRO. JAMES GRAY, S.M. Not a captain of the strategic type, who guided his men into battle, but a fighting captain, who led his men into the fray, Danny's efforts won for the team--in spite of its poor score book record-one of the staunchest and largest followings in years. Practically every game furnishes Vig- nettes, miniatures, of Dan leaving a very surprised kicker looking for his punt, a very bewildered would-be passer looking for his fumble, a very disgusted would-be runner pawing the earth. Graduating at mid-year, Dan left at Central a remembrance of a line ath- lete, and a bunch of line friends. Gia ,ffl Nov. 3-T. M. I. Nov. 10-Harlandale Jackie Mueller - Solid and speedy, this Junior's star rose brightly during the season to reach its apogee by finding a place among the Independent All-Star constellation. Jack, or Doc, as the boys liked to call him, began the season in comparative obscurity, but his play- ing, steady and dependable at the start of the season, rose to a brilliant height in the Edison game. This victory, pre- cious because singular, was due in large part to J ack's inspired effort. Regular- ity at training and practice with the spring football squad has prepared him to spearhead a re-enlivened Central grid offense next year. Kulesza, W. Tynan, D. Dounson fcapt.J P. Green, J Weaver. Backfield: J. Mueller, J. Collins, W Winters, R. Bordelon. On the Whole, the Button season was far from successful. The initial game with Hot Wells 0-0, was one that Central should have won, but failed to do when the team lacked the necessary punch to score when in pay-dirt. The Harlandale Indians skirting around ends at will, trounced the But- ton outfit 26-0. A 19-0 defeat was plastered on the Centralites when the T.M.I. Panthers out- charged and outplayed the Button eleven. Smarting from these three defeats, the Buttons came back to play the best game of the season, clearly outfighting and outplaying a highly favored Edison Golden Bear eleven 19-7 on the Bear field. An Edison blocked kick on the 15-yard line set up the initial score after Edison had tallied early in the first quarter. Willingham scored on a 60-yard run off tackle, tossed another pass to Hutzler that carried some 50 yards in all to give the Buttons their only victory of the season. St. Anthony's Yellowjackets hit an over-confident Button eleven and crushed it 29-2 after a hard-fought 7-2 first half. Burbank's Bulldogs of the city league, starring their flashy runner Jerry Mangum, trimmed the Buttons in easy style 13-0. Winding up the season with two trips, the first to Laredo and the second to Fredericksburg, the Buttons failed to tally in either encounter. The Martin High Tigers of Laredo in their machine-like play smothered the Blue and Gold eleven 41-0. Fredericksburg, capitalizing on a first-play fumble by Central, jumped into a 6-0 lead with but one minute played and then increased their score to 12-0 in the early minutes of the third period. Captain Dounson was the outstanding player for the Buttons throughout the season, offen- sively opening holes in the center wall and defensively backing up the line on almost all plays. Jackie Mueller, rated all-city back on the independent team roster, was greatly responsible for the 19-7 Edison victory. Buttons starting lineup-Line: C. Hutzler, W. As Bert Brennan, he spent a highly successful career as a feather- weight knight of the squared circle from 1918- 1928. He then retired into active amateur and professional refereeing. This year he contributed the valued and appreciated services of coaching and training any and all potential student boxers and of capably refereeing and judging the Annual Boxing Tournament. Boxing is one of the main events looked forward to annually by the student body. This year the turnout of about 80 boxers provided a week and a half of top-notch preliminaries before the semi- finals and finals on March 16 and 17. As an improvement over last year, a ring was set up in the gymnasium instead of the basement, in order to accommodate the increasing crowds. Under the direction of Bro. Joseph Lanfer and Mr. George Schweitzer, and with the ardent and valuable assist- ance of Messrs. Willard Brown, Sam Slotsky, and Jerry Crowley, the eighteen final bouts provided one of the best and most varied amateur ring exhibitions of the city. Evenly matched bouts in weights ranging from 75 to 175 pounds and including students from seventh grade to fourth high, provided thrills and surprises for faculty and students. D. Martinez, R. Zamora, G. Ban-en, E. Finck, R. Jaeckle. G0ld medals 2d0I'Hed the proud breasts of the winner and sterling silver awards consoled the semi-finalists who missed the boat on the last night. W. Hamilton, G. Farmer, A. Goetter, J. McCarty, E. Toudouze, R. Hajek, P. Dounson, R. Foster, D. Pozza, Y 1 ,f Later in the year, on April 10, the top- - 'A' notchers of Central's squad furnished eight of the seventeen bouts on the Police Benefit Boxing Exhibition which attracted a crowd of 6000 to the Munici- pal Auditorium. Then, after a period of intensive training, a full team of Cen- tralites entered the T. A. A. F. CTexas Amateur Athletic Federationj Tourna- ment at the Auditorium on April 18, 19 and 20, producing A. Goetter, O. Pozza and R. Wilkins as champions. 9 YU Left to Right: Front ron: R. Some thirty-odd boys participated in the intramural boxing tournament, thus offering the student body and friends many an opportunity for some good entertainment and sport. Daily Mass and Communion and frequent confes- sion were readily available for the Central- ites who were anxious to keep in condition spiritually, as well as mentally and phys- ically. g 3 is zz Father Chaminade in the field of religion, as many others in the fields of science, literature, art and medicine, may be said to have lived a hundred years ahead of his time, because he diagnosed, before the days of the French Revolution, the disease of Religious Indifference as the subtle but virulent cause of a troubled future for the world. The French Revolution and the numerous wars that have unceasingly followed it even up to our times, have shown that his diagnosis is sadly true. Hence, with an eye to a future world of Christian peace, the Brothers of Mary here at Central apply their Founder's remedy for modern troubles by striking at their roots-religious indifference. The first big step in this battle against re- ligious indifference is the Annual Retreat which, this year, was conducted by Fr. Al- phonse Piekarski from Sept. 28 to Oct. 1. The retreat consisted of short practical in- structions by the retreat master, question box, recitation of the rosary and other prayers in the homerooms, reading of spir- itual pamphlets and books, and serious thought about the future. One of the twelve beautiful stained glass windows that adorn the Faculty Chapel, shows Fr. Chaminade, the Founder of the Society of Mary amidst his early disciples. UNIOR SCDALIT Y The sodality this year consisted of two sections, the senior group under the direction of Father Clement Otting, and the junior division supervised by Brother Paul Novosal and Brother Paul Cherrier. Despite the rationing of food, a successful food drive was carried on and many needy families were made happy at Christmastide by the students' generous contributions. During Catholic Book Week, an impressive display was set up in front of the library and its results were noted from the number of Catholic books read. On the eighth of December, a Day of Recollection was conducted by Father Alphonse Piekarski for some seventy boys. As an added good work, each day the stu- dents go to Mass and Holy Communion for the old boys in the Armed Forces on over- seas duty. The mission contributions during Lent were very successful, with the fresh- man classes outgiving all the other home rooms. yrfe. i SENICR SQDALITY O THE CAST B. Bennett-The Gimp G. The club started its season with a series of five card and bingo parties. They joined with the Fathers' Club to sponsor the barbecue in May. The Father and Son banquet and the Christmas party given by the Mothers' Club have left pleas- ant and enjoyable memories for the past year and -dare it be mentioned-expectations for the next. DADS' CLUB The main object of the Fathers' Club was to establish a closer comradeship between Father and Son. The club entered its twelfth year as the most active organi- zation of the school. One of the principal objectives of the year was to further the fund for building the third floor of the school. This was accomplished by an all- day picnic and barbecue on May 7 at Pablo's Drive. The Club, among other things, sponsored the turkey raffle at Thanksgiving. Talks by prominent speakers enlivened the meetings. Among these were Colonel McShayne, Bro. Peter Dames, and Mr. Peavey. The Father and Son Banquet was the main social event of the year. S. Garrett ........... - ....... ---------President J. Mitchell .......... ....... - -Vice-Pres. E. Typewriters were clashing out words, periods wore down and time ran short. But with the able guidance of Brother Raymond McAtee, the deadline was met and the Central Catholic PEP was out on time. Brother Raymond assumed command of the Central Catholic PEP on September 1, 1943. Then with a small but capable staff, he proceeded to put out the issues of the PEP that were truly of, by, and for the studentsg issues chock full of their activities and undertakings, their successes and at times, it must be admitted, their ai ures. Thomas Stateczny, through his connection with the PEP, added to his reputation of capable scholar that of a resourceful editor. His staff, drawn from all divisions of the school, ably divided and completed the multitudi- nous tasks connected with each publication. The rush is on! A familiar scene at the ice cream counter during the lunch hour. Brother Paul Novosal, librarian, is ever ready to help boys find a boolr to suit their tastes. There are magazines in abun- dance to look over when classworlr is completed. The library is usually the scene of much study and reference work. lnvaluable information can be obtained from the numerous books that line the wall. The cafeteria is always a popular place at noon, and it is no small wonder, as studying works up an appetite. 18 Y f D pendablo Slrvico Bowen Auto Parts 82 Machine Co. 305 Martinez St. Garfield 1328 Crankshaft Grinding, Motor Rebuilding, And Parts Service Fully Equipped Shop And Parts Department aff' San Antonlo W1ne Co l Llqu D lla Htlltta Who esale ' or ealers Bottlers of the Famous - O O California XVines 715 S. Brother Thomas Helm was homeroom supervisor for the first term and was succeeded by Brother Joseph Fogerty after the mid-year examinations. Both teach- ers instilled into the boys the spirit of backing all activities and events. 7-B, like its competitor 7-A, passed the 20007, mark in the Turkey drive. The class contributed eight of its members to the midget football team, four to the basketball quintet, and three entered the boxing tournament. CLASS OFFICERS: ' A. Jonietz, S. Parker, F. Chaney. The class was full of pep and activity, being among the leaders in every drive, and first in most of them. It became the first class in Central's history to amass more than 25002, in the annual Turkey drive. Football and basketball ticket sales found the class right up in the front. KEATING W KELLER J LAYER The '44 grade-school graduating class lost a real friend early in March when Henry Munguia, after a long sickness, said goodbye to us, then quietly and peacefully slipped into Heaven. His class is proud of him-proud of his manliness, proud of his courage, proud just to have known him. 'tOne swell guyf' his classmates said, and that is tops in concise, boyish eulogy. Of all the boys who walked through the front door of Central that sunny September morning two years ago, Henry was the smallest. But the lads in Room 112 soon marked him as their leader. They saw in him some- thing worthwhile: and they said so when they elected him President of the seventh grade class. But Henry didn't get to serve out his full term of office that year. Sick- ness sent him to bed before it was hall' over. In June. when things took a temporary turn for the better, he insisted on coming to summer school to catch up with his pals of 112. He did it. And it was a very happy and bright- eyed Henry Munguia who walked into Room 114 last September. But Christ, the Perfect Teacher, had already registered him for the happier classrooms of Heaven. By December, he unknowingly walked out of Central's front door for the last time. It would have broken his heart, had he known then, because all during those months of sickness and down to the very last week he was looking forward to spring. when he would again be well enough to walk outdoors and hack to school. -That dream of his never came trueg and we feel sorry because we are the losers. We're going to miss Henry at the graduation exercises on May 26, and be wishing that he were with us. But he has already received his diploma, it is marked Heaven, lfequiesval in pace.
