Wayne, Indiana ume 33 THE BEGINNING OF TIME GR0W9 The beginning of a new way of life was created the first day we walked into C.C. Many new, different, and confusing things have happened. High school is a TIME for growing and developing a pattern that we will follow somehow in our future. A TIME when grades nneant something, a TIME when sports and clubs were an every- day thing, a TIME when friends were made and lost, a TIME for thinking and deciding, and a TIME most of all for us to remember. As you travel through these pages of memories let everything remind us of a TIME in our lives. β’ ;Β« :iΒ -Β ;. c.s.. -.ZTT r i is a MIN. SEC. TO PLAY DOWN A9 TIME G0E9 ON . . . SfJItlT lAVlΒ Β . Climaxing the week, the girls were allowed to wear blue jeans, a first for C.C. Thursday night activities were kicked off by the annual Powder Puff football game between the Seniors and Juniors women. Though the Jiving Juniors tried hard, they were no match for Dan ' s Dangerous Dames. The score was 27-6. The night continued with cheers, gifts for the team, the senior skit, introduction of the team, and the awarding of the Spirit Stick to the juniors. The bonfires were lit by the football team, and the court was announced. Friday ' s rainy activities started with a parade from the Villa to Zollner ' s Stadium. Half time began with the display of the floats and ended with the crowning of the queen, Mary Isbell. Following the scoreless tie with Luers, the Homecoming Dance was held in C.C. ' s gym. Music was by the East Bonk. Top Left β CC ' s three bonfires blaze. Above Left β And the winner is . . . Mary Isbell! Left β Sr. and Jr. men cheer Irish on. Instead of the usual fall play, Amber Review was a mixture of Laugh-in and Ted Mac ' s Amateur Hour. Mr. Buch- heit directed the play and students and faculty displayed various talents. The talent consisted of singers, dancers, and musicians. A pom pom routine was put on by the varsity cheerleaders. The skits were either musical or comedy. Be- tween talent presentations there were short comedy black outs. At different times throughout the play a small band paraded through the audience flinging confetti. Behind the stage the light crew, headed by Don Palmer, was working hard. The props were obtained by Jeannie Sitko and Sarah Gebbard. Sue Geary headed make-up. The play was held in the CC auditorium on November 19, 20, and 21. TTTirsPtn- UU LJ. Top Right β The cheerleaders perform a pom pom routine. Top left β A few lost minute directions from Mr. Buchheit. Onward CC. Song of India. Raise the flag, for ole CC. . . .! Add a few skits, a spirited student body, and The Pit, and you ' ve got an Irish pep session. Under the direction of Dole Cunningham, the pep ses- sions came to life. Inspirational speeches aroused the CC. students. Father Reginald told all to be proud to be from the Inner City. Coach Lasko ' s arousing speech telling us to get revenge from Dwenger because they tried to close us last year. Let ' s close them tonight! Dan ' s Dangerous Dames (alios, the mighty Senior Women), challenged the Jiving Juniors in the annual Powder Puff game at the Home- coming bonfire. And Tom Bierman gave a touching speech in which he apologized for the short-comings of the football team and promised better results in future games. Becky Banasiak led the skits for the pep sessions. Her poor, humble monk from Northrop was one of the high- lights at all pep sessions. Some of the monk ' s petitions: Kevin Carroll, full of spirits; Tony Quinn, most patient; All you cute janitors and Whitey; and Dean of Discipline, Tower of Strength, have mercy on us. In the Junior skit, they sang Oh Irish, won ' t you give us a victory tonight. ' Twos the night of the Wayne game, .... the Christmas skit brought out a new basketball team and a rookie coach as Tony Avila portrayed Coach Craft. All-in-all, it was a pretty good year for pep sessions β from the enthusiastic band to the decorated halls. In future years, we can look back and remember the spirited hours and excitement in The Pit. Top β The Seniors, decked out in their jeans, await the start of their lost pep session. TO EUROPE The Golden Shamrock Marching Bond is off to Europe! Due to their appearance and performance, they were offered a chance to compete in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Germany, August 13-27. This year, under the direction of Joseph Woods, who has been the band director at C.C. for the past 26 years, our band won second place in a marching contest and gained a first place award for uniform oppearence. The twirlers placed second in their division. During the summer, the C.C.H.S. Band went to camp and learned new instrumental and marching techniques. These skills were used in parades, half- time performances, pep sessions, concerts, and con- tests. The majorettes attended a twirling camp in New Haven, and Connie Broun attended a drum major camp at Smith Walbridge. Above β Mayor Ivan Lebamoff lights the torch to kick off the Olympic drive as bond director Joseph Woods looks on. Below β The Golden Shamrock Marching Band competes in a marching contest at North. The dance was held in the Clinton Room on February 13, from 8:00 to 11:00 and was sponsored by the music department. For the first time this dance was open to all classes, and it was the biggest turnout ever. The C.C. Dance Band provided the music, and among their selections were the polka and the bunny hop. Refreshments were served by the sophomores, and the oand worked on the decorations. The main event of the evening was the crowning of the queen. Candy Creason. Other members of the court were seniors, Jana Rauch and Jeanne Shaffer, end juniors, Janet Sample and Kitty Houser. But Irish Weekend really began the week before with the clubs and classes putting together their different plans and booths. One girl from each class was nominated for the Irish Court on the basis of her school spirit and enthusiasm. Members of the court included senior Mary Anne Arnold, junior Mary Harber, sophomore Larene Dilley, and freshman Judy Rondot. Friday night, junior Mary Harber was crowned queen to reign over the Irish Weekend. Two bands. General George and the Protestors for Peace, pro- vided the music for the dance which was held in C.C. ' s gym from 8-12. Saturday morning was spent decorating and setting up booths for the carnival. Booths included ring toss, basketball throw, penny pitch, a cake walk, and a jail. Food booths included baked goods, cotton candy, hot dogs, and tacos. There were two spook houses, one sponsored by the freshman class and the other by the Echo Staff. The senior booth was the biggest attraction. It was a pie throwing booth and the targets were four of our favorite male teachers. The carnival lasted from 4-10 in the gym. Sunday evening a coffee house was held in the Clinton Room from 7-10. Students and outside enter- tainers played. Among the performers were C.C. ' s Paula Taylor on the guitar, and Larry Budenz and his ' magic microphone. ' Also in the program were Father Forest and the Trees from Luers, Furg, and Ziggy- All proceeds from the weekend went to support the band ' s trip to Europe, the Shamrock, and the Echo. Where ' s Charley was chosen by director Martin Tierney as the final spring musical at Central Catholic. The story centered around Charley, played by Willie Hazelton, and his roommate Jack, played by John Tescula. The two girls in their lives were Ann Buchheit as Amy, and Terri Jones as Kitty. When Charley ' s aunt from Brazil doesn ' t arrive, Charley dons womens clothes to become the chaperon. He not only had trouble adjusting to womens clothes, but he also had to ward off a love affair with Mr. Spettigue. Other major roles in the play were Tony Avila as Mr. Spettigue, Barb Charais as Donna Lucia, and Tom Felts as Sir Francis Chesney. The chorus and dancers were composed of Seniors and Juniors. The sets were designed by Mr. Alois Buchheit. Again, Don Palmer was stage manager. Stage hands were Tom Till, Mark Rondot, Rick Brough and Tom Johnson. Follow spots were Gary Moeller, Tony Quinn and Mike Simone. On props were Sarah Gebhard and Jeannie Sitko. The make-up crew consisted of Sue Geary, Denise Daley, Sue Doak, Cindy Rietdorf, Heide Berger, Jamie Emmett, Debbie Rietdorf, Joanna Banut, Kathy Martin and Janet Sample. John Hake was the sound man, and Kathy Imler was in charge of costumes. A special plaque was presented to Mr. Tierney for his work at C.C. This year ' s theme was the same as the first prom held 34 years ago. The juniors and seniors worked hard to raise enough money by selling suckers and lightbulbs, and collecting newspapers, but the biggest boost came from the Mother ' s Club, who donated $1,000 so that the expense would not be too much for the juniors and seniors. The coordinators were Jona Rauch and Becky Kohrman. During the week before the prom, nominations and elections were held for the two courts. The junior court was announced as Julie Hofer, Carol Zollinger, Terri Jones, Tammy Derloshon, Kitty Houser, and Mary Harber. The senior court was Mary Beth Jackson, Sally Laguna, Sarah Gebhard, Judie Seibert, Meg Emmett, and Jana Rauch. Midway through the even- ing, Carol Zollinger was named as queen of the junior prom, and Sarah Gebhard as the senior prom queen. ENTERTAINS WITH CONCERTS, SHOWS. AND PARADES The 1971-72 orchestra and dance band were continually busy throughout the school year. The orchestra members performed for the choral concerts, Christ- mas Concert, and the Spring Concert. Although the dance band did not en- ter the NISBOVA contest this year, they were much involved with other ac tivities. One of their main performances was at the Valentine Dance on February 13. During Olympic Week, the band also provided music for the Olympic Ball which helped raise money for the band ' s trip to Germany. The year ' s activities were concluded when the Daughters of Isabelle gave a banquet in the dance band ' s honor. Concerts, Masses, and the Swing Choir were just some of the events that kept the CCHS Concert Choir busy. During the year, there were two main choral con- certs. The Concert and Swing Choir dis- played their abilities at these presenta- tions and also the Christmas Concert. The Choir itself was highlighted at the Christmas Mass when the members sang G. F. Handel ' s famous Hallelujah cho- rus. In April, the Concert Choir gave a half-hour show for the children at the Rudisell School of Special Education. The final appearance of the Concert Choir was at the Combined Concert held on May 12. To finish the year, Mr. Woods awarded the choir with a pizza and pop party. The CCHS Golden Shamrock Marching Band never had a dull moment. Ever since the middle of December, when the band received a telegram from Mr. O ' Brien of Notre Dame saying they were invited to the Summer Olympics, they had been in action continuously. At the beginning of the year, the band per- formed at all of CC ' s home football and basketball games. These perfor- mances also gave the Musician Major- ettes a chance to display their talents. In addition the band participated in a total of four parades including a parade held in their honor during Olympic Week, April 17-22. This year ' s Christmas Concert was performed for the student body and included Santa Clous and Fros- ty the Snowman. To keep the paper going, the staff mimeographed editions, like the first CC papers. The staff attempted to print an issue every ten days, and usually met their hurried deadlines. During the year part of the staff attended the NSPA-JEA Convention at the Palmer House in Chicago. The three-day confer- ence stressed layout, printing, and report- ing techniques. IRISH HUSTLERS KEEP TRYING The Central Catholic basketball team saw a not prosperous year end with a 2-17 record. Five gomes, how- ever, were lost by ten or fewer points. Despite the dismal season, the Irish gained much in experience. The team, made up of a majority of juniors, will carry their abilities to Bishop Dwenger and Bishop Luers in the following year. The fine standouts during the 1971- 1972 season were Larry Freeman, who received All-City honors, and Mark Kohne with the most rebounds. The big men on the boards were Bob Ol- ry, John Hartman, and Greg Gabet. Backcourt men were Chuck Freiburger, Larry Spreen, and Tim Hake. The se- niors on the squad consisied of guard Fred Smith and forward Moe Simone. Top β Chuck Freiburger goes up for on Irish basket. Left β Bob Olry adds to C.C. ' s score while Cadets stand by.
