Not only does it display the work of photographers and copy writers, but it is the tangible evidence of creative thought. By its own existence it is a last- ing piece of art. This additional factor, however, must also be considered. There was a moment in our youth, and the ' 68 Echo contains within its picture-walls a history of that brief period. Brief though that moment was, it was a time for many things. The joys of success and the in- sight that comes with failure; the fun of friend- ship and the happiness of learning about people and things. Truly, we can say with Ecclesiastes, M ' . - l ' ' ' ' % . %. Robert J. Hammond, principal, and Sister Maureen Therese, assistant principal, have once again played a big role in making the ' 67- ' 68 school year the success it has been. The CC faculty, consisting largely of many new members, both religious and lay, has been a great help to all. New teachers have joined in the ranks of those who were already experienced in the ways of CC living. They, too, have given their time and effort for the total education of the students of Central Catholic. 16 STRIVING FOR EXCELLENCE What is it that makes a good teacher? Is it dedication? Is it con- cern for youth and the desire to guide them toward a better life? Is it a pursuit for excellence? All these things must be con- sidered, and they are found in the men and women who staff the classes and departments of Cen- tral Catholic. Pictured on this page are Father Camillo Tirabassi, Mrs. Frances Robbins and Mrs. Vereda Main, Sister Mary Neil, Miss Donna Giere, Sister Andrew, and Mr. Martin Tierney. fS . ■ .. 17 tm - ' - CCH8 Serves Adminisiration Moves Ahead Although the people shown on this page have important duties at home or in the diocese, they devote much time to the betterment and development of Central Catholic. Undertakings were met and conquered as new interesting goals, with the help and understanding of Sister Mary Fran- ces, moderator, and the leadership of Tom Freistroffer, president; Margaret Rosswurm, vice-president; Dave Bier- baum, treasurer; and Bob VanRooyen, secretary. One of the first big projects of the year was a smoldering problem. Class unity seemed to be down and no one knew why. But this didn ' t set the vivacious Juniors back. Instead they put their heads together and came out as a strong unit. After much worrying and planning about decorations, publicity, tickets, dresses, and whatever else is included in Junior Proms, Purple Haze be- came a reality. The Junior Class officers ore: Tom Freistroffer, president; Margaret Rosswurm. vice-president; Dove Sierbaum, treasurer; Bob VanRooyen, secretary. The Junior Congress is shown here. In the base of an individual there is a capacity and a time to become a part of something involv- ing more than just that individual; something requir- ing the effort and talents of many. Projects, dances, and fun fill up the exciting mo- ments when there is so much to do and v hen that particular ability to stretch those moments into memories becomes so evident. This time brings with it the opportunity to learn about the joys of working and sharing responsibili- ties with friends and the grown-upness it takes to get along with others in a situation. And yet, funny as it may seem, this sharing and giving helps that individual more than anything which can be accomplished independently. There was a time for that development. That was sopho- more year; that was a time to become part of a class. A Time To Belong Left to right are Council members Maureen McCue, Sharon Alt, and Lucy Avila. John ' s homeroom this year has been 314. 73 Youngest CC ' ers Elecf Merriweather President When the doors of Central Catholic opened in September of 1967, a lively and enthusiastic freshman class joined the ranks of spirited Irish, CC ' s youngest members quickly learned the ways of high school, and began early to show teachers and fel- low students that they were determined to show true class and school spirit. Winning the Seaway Candy Drive was the happy job of Room 208, led by Sister Ann Carita. Other freshman rooms won second and third prizes. They are 309, Miss AAcClaren, and 206, Sister Andrew. Pete Rondot, Mark Mostes, 74 Class Of ' 71 Shows Spirii One of the strongest points of the Freshman Class this year was a great surge of enthusiasm and school spirit. In everything from the Candy Drive to sports to scholastic achievement, the frosh showed much effort. A skit put on by one of the Latin classes showed the rest of the student body the frosh wit and creativity. Pic- tured at the right are some of the boys who participated in it. The frosh girls ' volleyball team won the GAA Volleyball Tournament in No- vember. They defeated the seniors in the championship game. Miss Heighway was proud of the girls, many of whom had just learned the art of volleyball in the preceding months. James Carl is the center of attraction in the Latin skit. Bearing the great coach are Jerry Seyfert, Mel Johnson, John Herber and Tom Schnurr. One of the many bright spots in life at Central Catholic is the Athletic Department. Every season brings its own parade of sports, and this year teams from CC looked very im- pressive as they appeared in com- petition with other schools in the Fort Wayne area. Members of opposing squads ad- mitted that CC had the hardest hitting team in the city. Highlights of the season included victories over Central and South Side, both of whom were rated favorites. ?r ' ' was. the second consecutive year that the Irish ruined South ' s title hopes. The season was marred by injuries to key, experienced seniors. In many cases underclassmen capably filled in, raising hopes for the future. During the monthly meetings the or- ganization plans many different and exciting projects. The Chanson Fiesta, a Spanish- French-English hootenanny, held on Sunday, December 3, was the first big undertaking. The members of both Spanish and French Clubs joined to- gether and took turns singing songs in different languages entertaining a larger than expected audience in the Clinton Room. The following month, a banquet took place at the home of Steve Bon- sib. The students enjoyed the French Cuisine which they prepared them- selves with the help of Michele Bros- chart. Taking time out for a song are Sister Mary Frances and the French Club officers, Steve Bonsib, president; Sheila Farrell, secretary; Art Miller, treasurer, and Mike Marciniak, vice-president. Spanish Arts Offer Variety This year the Spanish Club combined with the French Club and presented the Chanson Fiesta. This bilingual pro- gram showed the school the splendor of the foreign languages that are of- fered to them in the curriculum. During summer vacation the Spanish Club helped the migrants that came to Bluffton to pick the tomato crop during the harvesting season. Before school ended last year committees were form- ed and on assigned days the different groups went to the Bluffton area to help these people. Moderator of the Spanish Club is Sister Josita. Van! were the enthusi- astic cries of French and Spanish stu- dents as Central Catholic students and their friends attended CC ' s first Chan- son Fiesta in the Clinton Room, Dec. 3. Chanson Fiesta is a translation from both languages. Chanson is the French word for the song and Fiesta is the Spanish word for feast. The program was planned by the modern language teachers. Sister Mary Frances, Mr. Martin Tierney, Sister Jo- sito, and Miss Kinder. Tom Jones and Steve Bonsib shared honors as masters of ceremonies at the evening assembly. Several special numbers were done by individual classes, and Donna Brannon sang Adios Amor. Kathy Imler and Mr. Tierney sang a duet, Perfidia. Sophomore Jon Stanski appeared in one of the numbers dressed as a clown. This was to accompany Spanish I ' s rendition of El Payaso. The foreign language songfest was judged to be a great success by the students, teachers and parents who at- tended. This type of activity proved in an- other way that CC students are very high in talent and creativity. Katy Kelly Presides Over Latin Meetings Semper Fidelis! Some seniors helped to gather data for the yearbook while others worked on various sections of the annual. Juniors from Sister Joel ' s Journalism Class helped to do some of the work on the underclassmen sections. In this way they learned the art of yearbook- ing for their own senior Echo. During the year the Echo staff lived in hopes of finishing sections and meeting deadlines. They worked many days after school and on many free days in Central Catholic ' s Press Room. Taking a breather from hard work on the ' 68 Echo are Kathy Imler and Linda Weinhold, co-edi- tors, and Sister Joel, yearbook adviser. Tom Jones, Linda Wait, Chris Bolyord, Anita Lobrjllo and Linda Robinson were key people on the Echo staff. A Time To Spend Self Serving as photographer for both the Sham- rock and the Echo was senior Mike Betts. He is shown here checking equipment in the Press Room. 112 Department Undergoes Changes The Shamrock went into a new look this year, with a larger format and a new manner of printing. Kothy Word assumed the duties of editor. She hod a staff of page editors and writers composed of seniors, ju- niors from journalism class, and some underclassmen who showed an interest in newspaper work. Sister Joel was the adviser to the paper, and introduced the new system whereby more students from all classes can participate in the activities of the journalism department. While the bi- weekly collections were the Mission Club ' s major undertaking, the organi- zation contributed to the White Fathers in Africa. Christmas cards, wrapping paper, and ribbon were made available to students to buy and sell to their fami- lies and neighbors. The items were sold with the idea of class competition, in which the Freshmen placed first. The unit also collected, through homerooms, food, clothing, and toys for the Christmas Bureau. These were distributed to many needy families in the city. The Christmas Bureau project was termed a big success, as enough was collected for all families involved. Seniors Rose- anne Lahmeyer, Steve Vaughn, and Ken Vaughn, and sophomore Patricia Herber all made their debut on the stage in lead roles. Material witnesses Cecile Wirtner, Mike Pettit, Marilyn Craft, Jerry Gill, John Moore, Katy Kelley and Pat Getting, all seniors and junior Chris Motherwell, provided the clues to the murder. The district attorney Greg Straessle, senior and the defense attorney, junior Dave Bierbaum, gained the confidence of the jury with their questions and case summaries. Judge Lyndell Morgan, and the courtroom staff consisting of Martha Lapp, Greg Moyer, Sue Schulien, Lynn Sordelet, Mike Betts, Jeannie Berkshire, John Palmer and Stan Huntington, finish out the cast of the play. Night Of January 16th was a first for CCs drama department in that it was the first play ever pre- sented in which the audience par- ticipated. Dave Bierbaum pleads his case before Judge Lyndell Morgan. Others shown are Rosanne Lah- meyer, Mike Betts, Lynn Sordelet, Pot Herber, Sue Schulien, and Greg Straessle. RjW l ft MO nov.)o,ji ix 154 Tierney Directs ' Donnybrook ' Another touch of the Irish was brought to Central Catholic in the form of Donnybrook which was presented as the spring musical under the direction of Mr. Martin Tierney. The evenings of May 3, 4, and 5, found a little bit of Ireland and a lot of its charm in the de- lightful adaptation of Maurice Welsh ' s The Quiet Man. The story concerns the colleen Ellen Roe Danoher who falls in love with an American ex-fighter John Enright. How- ever, the courtship is complicated when Ellen ' s brother, Will Danaher, forbids her to see him. On the other hand though, is Mikeen Flynn, the town matchmaker who is bent on getting these two together. Mr. Martin Tierney, director of the Spring Musical, pauses behind stage during rehearsals. Below, Norb McAfee takes to the air as he plants a Breezer Special on the Saints. Irish Capture First 9ectional The first 1968 IHSAA sectional tourney brought many firsts in basketball history. Hoosier hysteria was at its peak when Cen- tral Catholic High School won its first sectional. With CC drawing EInnhurst for their first contest, many fans were worried, but need- lessly so. Before a crowd numbering over 8,000, the Irish downed the Trojans 70-58. The New Haven Bulldogs were the next foe for the Irish. Losing Tom Roehling in the third quarter with foul trouble gave New Haven their chance. At one point they led by 10, but with that rallying Irish spirit coming to life in the fourth quarter, CC defeated New Haven 74-65. In the championship game, CC took a big victory over the Bishop Dwenger Saints, 61-49. m To Cut Down The Nets A piece of the sectional net goes to CC ' s great coach, Leon Young- peter. Mike Bird battles for the ball at the right as Steve Krouse closes j i ' i Ifff -K Mike Bird and Don Smith go into the aid against New Haven, while below Mike Bird seems to be giving his blessing to the frantic ploying of his teammates. 163 Regional Victory Leads Norb McAfee bounds in front of Central ' s Charlie Reese in an offensive maneuver. It was a long way to the Sweet Six- teen, but CC ' s Fighting Irish turned the trick by beating the Lakeland Lakers for the Fort Wayne Regional Championship. The hardest gome of the regional tournament for the Irish was not the championship game, but the afternoon game, in which CC ' s neighbors, the Central Tigers, put up a hard struggle. Only in the final seconds of the contest was victory assured for the Central Catholic cagers. Pitted against Marion in the first gome of the semi-state, CC found the Giant defense hard to beat. While turning in a fine defensive show, the Irish bowed to their opponents, who went on to win the semi-state and a trip to Indianapolis to bid for the state championship. The game with Marion ended a trail of glory for the Irish, but everyone re- members the sweet taste of sectional and regional victory. They were great days for the Irish! Diane and Art are pictured at the left. A Time For Uprooting Whai Has Been Planted old time we cannof keep. Time does not become sacred to us until we have lived it, until it has passed over us and taken with it a part of ourselves. —Burroughs And there was a time — a retreat, a sock hop, dis- sections, pep sessions, intramurols, bonfires, a home- coming, bunsen burners, a first issue, bus trips, a prom, a ploy, a musical, a winning streak, a class ring. Within this realm came people, for time is but re- corded relationships — lives and friendships. Things we work on together do indeed become a part of us, and in this spirit we, the staff would like to share our efforts. We would like to thank Sister Joel, our moderator, for her time and patience; all those involved in con- quering major sections or only bits and pieces,- and especially all the faculty, who were so kind when pic- ture schedules interrupted classes, plans and students. And so, sixty seconds and a minute was over. It was a time for being a part of the whole, for learn- ing from books and people. And now for a moment, it is a time for remembering. yC Ux iH- i-t.
