Gc 977.202 F77ce 1966 y I rr.TioN i Echo 1966 Central Catholic High School Fort Wayne, Indiana OMPLIMEMTS Of THE ' 32 .. ' ,S Man achieves his destiny by developing the sleeping genius that lies within himself. Youth cannot always clearly visualize this goal because it is hidden deep- ly within his soul. He builds upon his dreams which are shadows of the things to be. Like an architect, he visualizes his dreams by the continual process of lay- ing each individual stone on stone. Thus all mankind can become architects of their own cathedral, the citadel of their soul. 10 ii ' 1 ! { Each new thought and action contributes to the completion of this dream. 11 12 In time the chaos vanishes and the dream becomes a reahty. 13 spiritually, mentally and phys- ically he strives to lift the uprights and lay the stones of each encounter out of the darkness into the light. 15 Mr. Lee Horn and Mr. Edward Morris review a busy day of teaching. Mr. Horn teaches English and Government. Mr. Morris is a Government teacher also. Administration and Faculty 16 s Teachers Are Persons Poets and Prophets The role of a teacher is a complex one. The teacher must be friend, confidant and advisor as well as instructor and guide. Each day brings new problems and new challenges as new ideas and thoughts take form. The demands made of a teacher urge him to find some- where within himself, the ability and grace to fulfill the needs of his students, for his influence over their growth and future is great. The results of his labor are often obscure but the satis- faction is great when he glimpses the beginning of an idea, the acceptance of a new theory, or the beauty of the light of understanding in a student. These happenings may be brief, it is true, nevertheless, they are real. UN 17 Administration Direction. . . Dimension. . . Development. His Excellency. Leo A. Pursley. Last year the members of the Class of ' 68 were freshmen, timid, shy and confused. Now, with the experiences of another year at C.C. behind them, they can be justifiably proud of their school and of their class. Their enthusiasm and spirit are unsurpassed. Their partici- pation in school activities and their attendance at sports and other events bear evidence to this fact. The sophomores have many reasons for being enthusi- astic. Their record in all respects is outstanding. The re- serve athletes captured many honors, including the city crown in football. Many s ophomores ' names appeared on the honor roll. Other sophomores showed ability by par- ticipating in such activities as the fall play. The Class of ' 68 proves that although the enrollment at C.C. is de- creasing, the quality of the students is not. After the campaign speeches were completed, the sophomores elected the class officers pictured on the opposite page, left to right: Mike Marciniak, president; Kathy Imler. vice-president; Linda Dodane, secretary; Jim Andrews, treasurer. 37 Cheerleaders, Blocks Thrive S. Music, a guiding force in the lives of all men. Every man needs some means of finding himself, of knowing what life holds for him. Music is both the end and the means of accomplishing this goal. Through music, man can find out who he is, and the extent of his potential. The enrichment, the beauty that music adds to his life can help man to find his soul and to know its reaches. The dreams that are buried deep in the soul slowly come to light under the influence of music. Once he begins to find these dreams, music helps man to work with them. The discipline that music requires in- vites these dreams to come forth and be shaped into reality. The end skill imparted by the study of music gives man an essential adaptability. With his ability to work with his dreams, man can perfect them, and build his life upon them. In time, man can build his own life, making it just what he wants it to be. Music accomplishes much in a search- ing soul. 57 Musi ic Mr. Woods For the past nineteen years, Mr. Joseph Woods has been the driving force behind the Music Department here at C.C. In addition to the heavy responsibility of directing each of the music organizations, Mr. Woods is active in a number of outside interests. As it has eveiy year, the band, through Mr. Woods ' capable direction, took many honors at the various con- tests held throughout the year. Members came back from the two solo and ensemble contests this year sporting a large number of medals. The Musician Majorettes brought honor to the band through their dual successes at twirling contests both on the regional and state levels. These nine twirlers, pictured on the introductory page are: Jane Monroe, Kathy Hettinger, Nancy Arata, Carol Ann Thieme, Mary Lawrence, Janice Monroe, Linda Lib- bing, Joyce Wuttke and Mary Krauskopf. In addition, the band won an Excellent rating at the annual marching contest, led on by its capable drum major, Mike Ruesewald, and supported by the strong beat of the percussion section, (below) m -41 A Ak - j Sljj Jl. i % f k, - 5 ' I f i tT i Β£ A i . The String Orchestra is a regular- ly scheduled class in which members have the opportunity of playing the music that is a heritage to our society. The classic works of many famous composers were scored for the orches- tra because of its versatile beauty. For special performances, select mem- liers of the band are added, forming the Symphonic Orchestra. The dance band is a more modern form of expression for talented com- posers. Many of the most beautiful of the contemporary compositions are designed specifically for the dance band. The C.C. Dance Band, made up of members of the band, plays for various social events during the year. 62 Beauty The String Orchestra: Row 1, Judy Sunderland, Mary Jo Her- ber, Patty Neuhaus. The ups and downs, struggles and hard- ships of life are portrayed most vividly in this wide world of sports. Nowhere else in any of man ' s inventions can you see the intricate parts of life unveiled; but in the locker room, on the gridiron, on the hardwood, or on any of the other playing fields of sports. What is life but goals and the reaching of this reality? This is seen on the playing fields, where the underdog overcomes the great odds to win the big one or the runner who practices for years to win or even the crippled lad who becomes one of the sports world ' s greats. Even of those that lose, it can not be said that they have failed because even in defeat there can be victory; like the man who runs the greatest race of his life but doesn ' t win. Here at Central Catholic we learn the teachings of life and its ways through sports. The athletes play, the specta- tors watch and no matter what the outcome, there is al- ways a lesson taught and a lesson learned. 65 T. Koacli All City P. Bird Tackle VP iΒ Mk ii_ il feHl- .1 .Jil J. Ending up with a 500 season, the Irish also earned the esteem and admiration of all the other schools throughout the state. The Irish were right in the thick of city series competition until a spunky Luers team upset them. They beat Central the following week and then bogged down by a strong Redskin team on a muddy field, they were out with a tie. Still with the determination of 24 seniors, CC came back to beat a ranked Anderson squad and came within seconds of defeating No. 4, ranked South Side. Behind this well coached team, coached by William Smith, were many outstanding players. Terry Martin led the passing attack as he passed to Dan Phillips, Jim Junk, and Ken Hayden for many a valuable yard. Holding up the running end was Mike Statz, city scoring champ, and Neil Kobi. We can not forget CC ' s strong line headed by captain, Tom Roach and the fine defense. Mike Statz wards off South tackier to score in one of the most tense and hardest fought games of the season. The Irish won 62-60 in a thriller. The 1965-66 fighting Irish basketball team made up for their lack of height with superb shooting and fast play. The squad composed of seven returning lettermen and under the coaching of Coach Leon Youngpeter tallied, twice, a score of a hundred points or more. Spearheading the Irish attacks this year were Dick Krouse, holder of the school scoring record, and Dan Phillips. Behind these lads were Mike Scudder the team play maker, and a strong bench. They displaved good sportsmanship through the year. Though the team split the season, the CC fans can be proud of the fact that they were represented well by this ball club. At tlie close of the 65-66 season we congratulate Coach Youngpeter, his departing seniors and all of the other varsity men as well as the other ball players that upheld the name of CC on the hardwood. Since Wrestling was reinstated into the athletic program at CC it has made nothing but great strides toward per- fection. They didn ' t fare so well the first year, but last year they sent a few boys to state. This year is their crowning glory. Coach Deleany worked hard with these men bringing out their talents. The grapplers had a remarkably good season with fine wrestlers such as Dave Leon, Mike Poitras, Paul Henry, and Dave Dowden returning next year. Central Catholic provides us with this experience. We are searching for knowledge, for self- identity, for the means to live a Christian life. At C.C, we are able to establish relationships with people who provide the intellectual stimulation necessary to acquire knowl- edge. These people give us the guidance and freedom necessary to develop individuality, and help us to maintain a Christian atmosphere in which we are able to find a means to our eternal goal. All the Way Home- -Agee We, as seniors, will be leaving Central Catholic and our high school world behind us when we graduate. However, we have many valuable things to take with ducation. a sense of values and a spirit of com- us munity. We have friendships, feelings, attitudes, and abilities that will be ours forever. Perhaps the most valuable things we will take with us will be our EXPERIENCES. Our EXPERIENCES from these past four years have made us the individuals we are today. We are fortunate. We have had many EXPERIENCES. Practicing long hours in the gym . . . bending over the long table in the Shamrock room for hours on end . . . spending evenings on the stage in another world lighted by footlights . . . being part of a cheering jumble of people at a football game . . . Mass, when the Mystical Body became a reality for us . . . good days when the answers came quickly, easily . . . bad days when no answers came and we were strangers to ourselves . . . the pride we felt in accomplishment . . . the strength we found in disappointment . . . and the joy of living every moment to its fullest. Every encounter we had with life through people, ideas and responsibilities helped us to grow in sensi- tivity, awareness and commitment. Every EXPERIENCE is a wonder; a wonder of feeling and of growth. Through EXPERIENCE we are able to take the measure of the persons we are and those we will become. During the school year the staff concentrated on photography set-ups, layouts and meet- ing deadlines. We have attempted to make the ECHO 1966 truly echo the happenings of the past school year. The student bodv is not generally aware of the great amount of time and effort involved in publishing a yearbook. The staff, however, lives with the yearbook from its conception in rough draft, through the preliminary stages until it is completed. We, the staff, are grateful for the EXPERIENCE and for the valuable experiences we have gained. Vie have learned many things about people, about ourselves and about responsibility. We hope that you, the student body, will receive just as much from the ECHO 1966 in terms of enjoying the memories echoed within its pages. Before the ECHO 1966 is really complete I would like to ex- press my gratitude to Becky Hueber for her invaluable aid and assistance; to Sally La Pointe for her original theme designs, seen on the introductory pages of every section; to the pho- tographers, Greg Roth, Chris Bennett, Ken Meyer and Phil Federspiel, for their indispensable work and especially to Sister Pauline, our faculty moderator, for her generous giving of time and energv. How could I ever begin to thank the hard-working staff without whom this publication would not have been pos- sible? I am sure that none of us will ever forget the many hours we spent in the Shamrock room! The faculty and student body also deserve my thanks for their cooperation with the staff. The cooperation we received made our jobs that much easier. Now that the school year is over, the thank you ' s expressed, the ECHO 1966 is at long last complete. This quotation comes to mind β€” And only the Master shall praise us, and only the Master shall blame; And no one shall work jor money and no one shall tvork for fame. But each jor the joy oj the working, and each, in his separate star. Shall draiv the thing as he sees it jor the God oj things as they are!
