The student is the life, the pulse, the heart beat of the school. Our classmates who can be seen going to concerts, attending games, and cheering at pep sessions; who strive for top grades) lead a satisfying spiritual life; attend the plays and dances, contribute more of their time and effort and selves than can be estimated. School spirit is the core of activity and the basis of loyalty. We therefore ded- icate to you, the student body, the 1962 ECHO. t ■ c AO R! A member of Queen of Angels Parish, Jim was active in the Student Spiritual Council as a homeroom repre- sentative. He participated in the Latin Club and the Fighting 69th, and was a member of the varsity track team. Although it is hard to lose a classmate, we must remember that God ' s will comes above all. The IBM marked cards, new this year at C.C., are a great help to the teachers, and a sign of the future. As business manager, Mr. Charles Pendergast serves as manager of our brand new bookstore, and is in charge of tuition payments. For these and many other unknown services, we congratulate Mr. Pender- gast for a job well done. Although this was only Fr. Hammond ' s second year as principal of Central Catholic, his leadership and admin- istrative ability have en- abled him to carry out his many and varied tasks with great efficien- cy. Because of his many years as teacher in a senior homeroom, he is able to understand the needs of our school, and the students and teacher: in it. We take this op- portunity to acknow- ledge the outstanding accomplishments of Fr. Hammond, and thank him for his help and guidance. His Excellency, Leo A. Pursley, D.D., L.L.D., Bishop of Fort Wayne- South Bend. 12 Administrators Elaine Sutter is the possessor of the sunny smile that greets everyone who enters the first-floor office. Her efficiency and cheery disposition have made her well beloved by both faculty and stud- ents of Central Catholic. Sister Maureen Therese came to us this year from Ladywood School, Indiana- polis. However, she was no newcomer to Central Catholic, for she was a members of our faculty from 1940 to 1949. Sister feels the scholastic atmos- phere here is high, and that there is a love of scholarship among the students. Thank you, Sister, and welcome back to C.C.! 1 Martha Smith concentrates on her prayers. Steve Meier and Jim Piepenbrink seem to find Father Emanual ' s religion class humorous. Tom Palmer listens carefully to Father Zimmerman. 14 15 Eager geography students S. Fetzer, H. Kennerk, M. Sommers, and D. Lee look on as Sister Regina Theresa points out some interesting bits of world news and conditions which pertain to their geography studies. Sfi ese Mr. Daniel instills some of his wide spread knowledge into senior government student, Kathy Humphrey. 16 ( So Make lis Understand. ' Sister Augustine narrates the causes of the fall of the Roman Empire to her freshman World History class. J. Slater, M. A. Korb, J. Huguenard, M. Derheimer, and moderator Tom Gusching take part in a panel discussion on the causes of the Civil War in Sister Francis Elise ' s U. S. History class. Here, Sister Augustine helps a student along as one of his fellow comrades points to the area being discussed in a freshman World History class. Mr. McClintock ' s freshman World History class uses the mop to find some important places found in their lesson. 17 After finishing their experiment, Rita Ross- worm and Virginia Samreta clean up the chemistry lab. Sc ence Sister Mary Magdala demonstrates the slide rule to her physics class. above Joe Zuercher explains a problem to Sister Marie Hildegarde ' s fifth year math class. below Students of Sister Mary Gilbert ' s algebra 1 class work out problems on the board. 18 Maffi i 1 Larry Roffleson and Dave Pettit experiment with the Bunsen burner in Sister Jean Margaret ' s chemistry class. Sister Jean Margaret ' s biology class listens attentively as she explains the use of the microscope. Sister Mary Timothy explains the fundamentals of graphing to her Advanced Algebra class. ml pj ■ . J| | D. Wilson explains the bisecting of an angle to Sister Conrad as students look on. M 1 ■ I r 1  —■ - 19 Covers o A second year Latin student is helped along the age-old road of this marvelous language to a better understanding of it by Sister Maureen Clare. In this jet age, when international communi- cation is so easy, language study is of vital importance. No longer can we Americans confidently place the oceans between us and our philosophical enemies. We must learn to understand and appreciate our foreign neighbors. What better way than through studying their language. In Sister Constance ' s English II class Tony Martin is shown leading a discus- sion on a popular American novel. 20 rr Language E. Butler, D. Ben- bow, J. Farrell listen to an interesting Spanish conversation in Sister Loretta Ann ' s second year Spanish class. Senior Eileen O ' Brien seems to be deeply engrossed in her French lesson in Sister Marie Angele ' s second year French class. Sister Hortulana conducts a vocabulary drill in her fourth year English class of studious seniors. 21 Home Gconomics Sister Immaculee supervises B. Waltzer and R. McConnehey sewing. Sister M. Christyn dictates a letter to her shorthand class. $ +t Typing students are engaged in transcrip- tion. R. Oddou, A. Skevington, and M. Bowers are cooking up a tasty dinner. 22 and Business Carol Fox awaits typing instructions. Miss Seyfert points out answer to M. Spatt. Sister M. Magdala ' s shorthand class takes letter for 23 transcription. 24 D ITIES Organizations and Activities are the most important extras in an edu- cation. We are more than just an intellect, just as learning is more than words, facts, and textbooks. As part of a club we use what we learn in theory in the classroom. This helps us to mature and to grow into Christ-like adults who by our faith, action, and example will carry the echo of Christ into every place throughout our lives. 25 Strike Up 5fi. Band! The Central Catholic Golden Shamrock Marching Band, under the direction of Mr. Joseph M. Woods, is one of the out- standing products of our distinguished music department. Everyone at school is aware of the quality and variety of music presented by our band, but few realize the hours of tedious practice necessary for the finished product we hear and see. Besides being accomplished musicians, members of the marching band must be able to go through the intricate rou- tines and formations all of us enjoy so much during the half-time at the football and basketball games. Their musical background presented during these home-games, does much to spark enthusiasm for our team. Numerous awards won by the marching band members have done much to increase C.C. ' s prestige, as have the twirlers ' skillful manipulation of their batons. We take this opportunity to acknowledge the work of these dedicated students, and to thank them for the enjoyment and honor they bring to our school. TWIRLERS KNEELING left to right 1 . M. A. All students at C.C. have the opportunity to use their vocal talent, no matter how small it may be, through the three choirs of the Music Department. Both the Varsity Chorus, and the Concert Choir, hove been entertaining at concerts for many years, and this year, the new All-Student Choir was formed. Composed of members of all four classes, it is improving with every performance, and will soon reach the heights of the other two. The entire school was treated to the performance of these groups during the Christmas assembly. Their ability to sing such a variety of songs so well impressed all present, and gave C.C. students a fitting preparation for the great feast of Christmas. Obringer, C. Bauman, S. Murphy, R. When we participate in any phase of the sports program, we are called upon to practice virtues which we would learn nowhere else. The self-discipline of sports requires moral as well as physical strength — a will to win — perseverance — a readiness to accept defeat with a smile. Through them we become spiritual and physical athletes who can take it as Christ could. 55 Hal Coar, a guard on our fighting Irish team, has played football for seven years. Listing English and social science as his favorite subjects, he plans to at- tend college after graduation. Hal en- joys various sports besides football, such as basketball, golf and tennis, and also likes to dance, eat, and disc-jockey. Mike Offerle, senior center and line- backer, has been playing football for seven years. His favorite subjects being Math and history, he plans to attend college, probably Purdue University. Mike enjoys ice-skating, golf, and bowl- ing, and is also an outstanding base- ball player. In 1961, he was named Most Valuable Player by the Jun ior Federation of Baseball. Stalwart Seniors - Dick Frantz, who played football for three years in both grade and high school, is the right tackle on our team. Dick lists cars as his hobby, and says he also enjoys playing basketball and baseball. He would like to go to col- lege, but thinks he will go into the service after school. Noteworthy items about Dick include the fact that he made the second team for All City this year, and on November 4, at the annual Football Dance, was crowned Football King. Playing everything except center and halfback, Bill Nancarrow has been an important member of our team. He has been playing football since grade school, and is usually found in an end or fullback position. He enjoys Gov- ernment and English best, and has plans to attend college. Bill enjoys many other sports, and was a member of our track team at C.C. Among the many sports left tackle Tom Newport likes, football is his favorite. He has played in high school for four years, and this was preceded by two years of grade school experience. Tom plans to enter the IBM Training School at International Harvester after gradua- tion. 56 r Tom Tyler is quarterback of our mighty football squad. He enjoys physical science, and plans to enter the Navy after graduation. Tom likes to hunt, swim, and participate in many other sports, and collects old coins as a hobby. Although halfback Steve Meier was out seven weeks of the season with a should- er separation and a leg hemorrhage, he still played some fine football. An ex- treme sports enthusiast, you will find him active in almost every sport, golf and diving included. His school activities are also numerous. He was secretary of his sophomore class, and is now serv- ing as vice-president of the Sons of Mary. Listing math and English as his favorite subjects, he plans to put them to use while studying business in college. Seasonal Standouts! I Ron Schroyer, who plays defense, has been a member of our football team during the last four years. His favorite activities include weight-lifting, hunting, fishing, and ice-skating. Ron, who also is a member of the track and wrestling teams, was elected sergeant-at-arms of the Letterman ' s Club. A member of St. Patricks Parish, he plans to attend col- lege after graduation. Senior end, Mike Obringer, has been playing football since fifth grade, and has been a member of C.C. ' s varsity for two years. Mike, whose hobby is dood- ling different designs, plans to ottend college and study architecture. A mem- ber of St. John the Baptist Parish, New Haven, he is president of The Son ' s of Mary, and treasurer of the senior class. Senior Guard, Bob Wehrle, is a veteran of seven years football. Naming English and typing as favorite subjects, he plans to attend college next year. Bob, who enjoys hunting, fishing, basketball, and weight-lifting, has been a member of the track and wrestling teams here at C.C. He was chosen a member of the first team. Spice 58 u Several weeks before school started, our grid- iron greats ended their vocation to begin getting in condition for the coming season. Their hard work and the brilliant coaching of Walter Bartkiewicz, provided our school with a fine football season, and a team of which our school was justly proud. Although we were not able to retain our City Championship title for a second year, our team looked good as it kept improving after a couple of mediocre starts. Their sharp blocking, hard running, and ac- curate passing provided us with numerous thrills. There is a saying that variety is the spice of life, and our team gave us a variety of thrills in all of their hard fought contests. They were well supported by our student body, who sat through both rain and snow to cheer the team to victory. Next year the team will miss the service of sev- eral seniors, who ended their careers by defeating South Side, thereby giving the city series title to Bishop Luers. Although we did not win every game, it is well to remember the adage: When that One Great Scorer comes to write against your name. He ' ll write not that you won or lost, but how you played the game. In the few years since Walt Bartdiewicz came to Central Catholic, many good things have happened, 2 city series titles and many a fine season. We have seen him groom boys into men and coach players into a team. Despite the so-so season of 1961, our coach and team can feel proud of the spirit and enthusiasm with which they tackled a terrific schedule of formidable opponents. 59 Hi , i jJArffr-c ' . ;.. Having played basketball for the last seven years, John Dullaghan has a wealth of ex- perience which he puts to good use on the basketball floor. A Senior, he plans to at- tend Marian College next year to study Busi- ness Administration. Co-captain of the basket- ball squad, John enjoys baseball and skiing in addition to his favorite sport, basketbatl. Dave Schenkel, tall center on our varsity, has been very active here at C.C. in ath- letics. Besides 4 years of basketball, he has participated in track for 2 years and football for 3 years. His hobbies are building model airplanes and go-carts, and he enjoys ice- skating and water-skiing outside of school. Dave, who plans to attend Notre Dame or the University of Dayton, will work for a civil engineers degree. 9rish Out-Vhy Senior forward Maury Bubb has been playing basketball since the sixth grade, and was a member of the frosh and reserve squads before joining the varsity tast year. Maury ' s favorite pastimes are sports, and he puts basketbatl, golf, tennis, baseball and swim- ming at the top of his list. Besides being elected vice-president of the Senior Class, he was chosen co-captain of the basketball team. Steve App, Senior center or forward, has been playing basketball since the fifth grade. Outside of school, he participates in base- ball, tennis, water-skiing, golf, and ice- skating. Steve is undecided about college, however his favorite subjects are History and English. Senior Pat O ' Reilly plays either the forward or center position on our basketball team. Having participated in this sports for the last eight years, Pat is able to handle the ball quite well, and is an important mem- ber of the squad. He plans to continue his education at the University of Notre Dame next year, and is looking ahead to a career as a mechanical or electrical engineer. 62 □ Out-Run OuUScove Tom Walsh plays forward on our mighty varsity. Only a Junior, he has been partici- pating in this sport for the last six years. Tom, who says football is his favorite game, has plans for college after next year. Carl Jacquay, a Junior member of the bas- ketball squad, holds down the center posi- tion. He has been playing basketball since sixth grade and it is his favorite sport. A member of St. Louis Besancon Parish, Carl plans to attend college and major in Mechan- ics and English after graduation. Dwight Craft, a Junior, has distinguished himself as a guard on the Fighting Irish varsity. Listing baseball and basketball as hlj favorite sports, he plans a future of either teaching or coaching. He has been playing basketball for the last seven years, and is hoping to be able to use it in the future. Tony Zych is a Junior member of our varsity basketball team who plays the guard position. At C.C., Tony has also participated in cross country and freshman football. His plans for the future are indefinite, however he is con- sidering college. Although Steve Krull is only a Junior, his outstanding ability in the forward position had lead our team on to victory. Having played basketball since the fifth grade, he plans to continue with this sport and play professional ball. Steve is a member of St. Judes Parish, and enjoys baseball in addition to basketball. 63 Row 1: F. Dubois, T. Walsh, S. Krull, P. O ' Reilly, D. Kraft, T. Zych. Row 2: T. Connan, D. Pettit, D. A season that held little promise became a resounding success. A group of boys with spirit, talent, and a will to win has led C. C. to its First City Series Title. The girls athletic program while necessarily limited by facilities is an integral part of the education of all C.C.ers. From the first physical education class as Freshmen the girls are encouraged to participate in G.A.A. activities and intramural sports of various types. The dedicated director of all this is a lady known and admired by all who have trod these halls, Miss Julia Heighway. It is to them that all look, the freshmen with awe, the sophomores with envy and the juniors with anxiety. And how do the seniors look at it all? After four years of labor, lament and longing the goal is attained and one wonders Where did it oil go, all the fun, the laughter, and the hard work? Where have the years flown? 77 Scintillating Seniors Mary Beth Miller and Maury Bubb, voted most athletic seniors by their class- mates, have held fast to the motto that a sound body and sound mind com- bine into a good Christian, Catholic boy or girl. These two certainly prove their point. Scholarliness in this age of missies, rockets, and the cold war is an indis- pensible commodity. Joe Zuercher and Sabina Sabo, this year ' s most scholar- ly seniors, should certainly do C. C. proud in whatever they undertake: Let the record speak for itself. 78 SfanJ Out Surpassingly Most 3viendly One can always depend on a hearty greeting and cheerful smile from these two friendly seniors, Martha Crosby and John Dul- laghan. It is as- tounding that four years have passed since we en- tered as Freshmen. Many studied hard, learning and acquiring the knowledge necessary for life. High school entails more than studying. The fun we ex- perienced at every game, cheering the team on, and our dances. Our Catholic education has given us cour- tesy, sportsmanship and responsibility; filling us with Catholic ideals and principles. In learning, let ' s not forget those who encouraged our education, our prin- cipal, Father Hammond, the priests, sisters, and lay faculty. They take an interest and work en- thusiastically not only for the ad- vancement of their class but the en- tire school. Their labors are often quiet and sometimes unrewarding but never, never, ending. Truly the underclassmen form the backbone of our student body. It is through their prayers and participation that we profit. 105 junior JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Left to Right, Georgia Brown, Vice-President; Diane Duquette, Treasurer; Tom Hueber, President; Tom Walsh, Secretary. cl ass of 2963 The class of ' 63 has attained the reputation of ability in sports, scholarship, and activities. These char- acteristics pinpoint the Junior Class assets. The annual Junior Dance was a big success all around. Everyone pitched in and did his assigned chores, and the co- operative effort was sensational. The success of a class is dependent on its unity and this the class of ' 63 has. The number of Junior boys participating in athletics expresses their attitude toward extracurricular activi- ties, helping to better school and selves. Many Junior girls are active in the Daughters of Mary and Veronica Guild, helping others help themselves. Underclassmen traditionally look up to those ahead of them, we hope that our actions make us worthy of that respect. 106 Adams Affolder Allison Alvarez Andria M. Ankenbruck D. Arlic Z. Arribalzaga J. John Mauch, dent. cl ASS of 1964 president; Mary Morris, treasurer; Karen Choka, secretary; Bill Hoot, vice-presi- As the class of ' 64 reaches the mid-point of its high school career at Central Catholic, its members can look back on their initial Freshman period, remember- ing the fun, frolic, and newly made friendships. But with Sophomore year came an emphasis on studies. Yes, scholastically work was rougher and tougher, and honor students were definitely to be congratulated for excellent work. Throughout the school busy Sophomores could be found; some helping in the cafeteria, others more artistically inclined, drawing posters for the Art Club. Still other talented tenth-graders were active in the band, the orchestra, and the chorus. On the sports scene, the Sophomore girls honorably took second place in the volley-ball tournament after succumbing to the champion Juniors. Football and basketball victories were few and far between, but the fighting Irish spirit was never lost. Classmates backed the reserve squads all the way. For a social whirl, the annual Sophomore Sock Hop was held to everyone ' s enjoyment. After having taken a step up on the ladder of life, the ' 64ers look forward to Junior year, class rings, and the big dance . Aberle Adkison Albert Aldin Alvarez Alvey Anderson L. Andrews S. Class of 1965 The record of this year ' s Freshman Class indicates that it may well become a worthy representative of Central Catholic in scholarship, athletics, and extra- curricular activities. Scholastically, we placed sixteen students on the high honors list and forty-three on the general honors list. Numerically, these statistics may not appear to be on par with the honors awarded to the three upper classes, but when viewed in proper perspective they are more than comparable. We have compiled an enviable record in athletics. We missed by a hair capturing the city frosh football championship. We led the school in the annual Christmas Card Drive and nearly repeated in the Sea- way Mint Contest. As the result of all these activities, the ex-eighth graders of early Fall have become a closely knit, well organized class. 122 L. Adams M. Alberts S. Allen T. Alter T. Alvarez M. Aguirre S.
