Your influence was felt by all who passed through these halls during those years. Your untiring efforts to make C.C. the outstanding school that it is, instilled in us a pride in our school and an appreciation of its values. Besides being principal of Central Catholic, and carrying the many burdens of that office, you had the added duty of supervising the diocesan school system. When it became impossible to give adequate attention to both tasks, and you had to leave Central Catholic, we students lost a warm friend, a sincere advisor, and an energetic leader. In thanksgiving for all your efforts of behalf of Central Catholic and its students, we dedicate our yearbook to you, Monsignor Lester. 1 DEDICATION To Father Hammond: 1149172 In the single year that you have been principal of Central Catholic you have established an outstanding record. The experience that you gained from your many years as a Senior homeroom teacher you used wisely as principal. Just as there are differences in people, there are differences in administration,- the principles of our Catholic school system remain the same, but policies change with the advance of new leadership. You hove brought just such a change with you. We have seen new approaches to old prob- lems, new answers to old questions, and we are sure that in the future, under your direc- tion. Central Catholic will continue to maintain its fine reputation. We congratulate you for a job well done and dedicate to you. Father Hammond, the 1961 ECHO. In Memoriam Gerald H. Dave Langas — President, Delores Hiatt — Vice-Pres., William Kossen — Secy., Kay Deni{ Treas. As the Class of 1961 leaves C. C, we like to reflect on some of our milestones here. In the dim past, when we were Freshmen, we were the first class to have cheer- leaders for our freshmen teams, and a fine job they did too. Next year we managed to have fun and make money when we inaugurated the Sophomore Sock Hop. Our first social whirl as a class was the Junior Dance, where things were a bit crowded, but everyone hod a wonderful time. This year our football team, led by the Seniors, took city, and put a fine number of players on the all-city team. We scored another first this year when our class, led by Mr. Daniels and the Civics Club, pub- lished the first Student Directory. Our high school days are almost over now, and though we wouldn ' t give them up for anything, as we leave C. C. we must remember that the future for which we hove been prepared lies open before us. 24 Sandy Adicinson Floyd Affolder Bob Allen Jim Alspaugh Alfred Alvarez Joe Anderson Norma Andria Ron Ankenbruck Jim Antil Paula Antonelli Mickey Bauermeister Don Bentz Kathy Becker John Beckman Michele Bennett Joan Bergman Sally Bermes Sue Bettag Judy Bobay Tom Bobay Mary Ann Boehm 26 Phil Bogdon Barb Bentley Paul Bickel n Pauf Brinker Rita Bubb Joe Christie Ron Brockhaus Paulo Brown Judy Bunting Theresa Butler Pat Castle .- - i r! JUNIORS 49 Left to right, Lydia Rodriguez — Vice-Pres, Maurice Bubb — Sec, Martha Crosby — Treos, Michael Offerle — President, Soon after entering Central Catholic the class of 62 was faced with the task of selecting class officers to rep- resent it during that difficult period of adjustment, the Freshman year. The class responded by choosing cap- able and responsible students for these important posi- tions. Sophomore year the elected officers were faced with even greater responsibilities, their capabilities can be seen by the resounding success of the Sophomore Sock Hop of which they were the chief planners. This year the Junior officers faced the task of selecting class rings and pleased a vast majority of their classmates with their wise choice. The success of the Junior Dance also demonstrates the skill and perseverence of those capable leaders. It can easily be said that the class of 1 962 has shown wisdom and responsibility in its selec- tion of leaders to help compile this fine three year rec- ord. 50 Juniors ROW 1: D. Adams, C. A wide range of interests and skills is demonstrated by the Sophomore excellence in athletic contests as well OS those of a more serious nature. As Freshmen the girls distinguished themselves by defeating the upperclass- men and becoming intramural volleyball champs. The boys too hove an admirable record. They have been praised by the coaches for showing promise in all pha- ses of athletics. In football they have two undefeated seasons in a row to show for their skill, hard work, and perseverence. The Freshmen approached the hallowed halls of Central Catholic with mixed emotions, awe, reverence and a great deal of excitement. Impressed by tales of past triumphs of C.C. and scared by tales of Freshmen being liquidated by those sophisticated Sopho- mores, Juniors, and Seniors they walked warily into that new world High School. It took quite a lot of doing to prove they weren ' t as green as was first reported, but once in the swim there was no holding them. The Freshman girls ' volleyball team defeated all comers including exalted Seniors. The Little Irish gathered several admirable victories in both football and basketball. C.C. found many future varsity players in these promis- ing young athletes. The Frosh took over in the Music Department and became active in a number of clubs. The election of officers again proved the responsibility of these young- est members of the C.C. family, they chose wisely and carefully. Yes in all their activi- ties these Freshmen have won their place in Central Catholic. F R E S H M A N C L A S S O F F I C E R S idi Freshmen ROW 1: C. Aberle, L. Adams, S. Adkinson, J. Albert, D. It has been 10 years since C.C. laid undisputed claim to the city title,- however, in 1958, your first year with us, you led your team to a four-way tie for the championship. This year with that fine com- bination of experience and leadership you turned out a fine team. Without you it couldn ' t have been done. The coach worked hard and the team played hard. Bucking a tough schedule, lacking the height and experience of last year ' s team, the boys went into every game with drive and enthusiasm. They achieved several outstanding victories and suffered some heart breaking defeats. No one who faced C.C. this year had an easy time. Our games were invariably a hard fought battle to the end. The test of a true athlete however, does not consist only of winning games. Sportsmanship — his relationship with the opposing players; cooperation — his relationship with his teammates and his willingness to surrender personal honor to team victories; and integrity — his representation of the school and its ideals, are the qualities of every true athlete. Our Irish measured up to these standards and should be congratulated for their very fme performance. Tlie members of our varsity squad pictured above with Coach Terry Coonan are: ROW 1: L. to R. A. Rigel puts one in. Toylor scores two. Although the Track team s not as large as it has been in recent years. It has proved to be more aggressive than any other team in the past. Six let- termen returned from last year ' s team to prove this. Coach Bartkiev icz feels that the boys played a splendid season. Bill Nancarrow seems a bit out of focus when he took this hurdle. Bill is not the only hurdler on the teom. Mel Vachon was absent when the picture was token. Ed Bobay, allstar pole voulter seems to be up in the sky as he goes through some routine drills during practice session. Shown here is Chuck Osterholt as he demonstrotes the tech- niques in high juinping. Bill Sitko stops from his routine practice to pose for our camera. With him is Bill Nancorrow an- other shotputter. Even though Track seems to be a very easy looking sport, those who participate find out that this is a false statement. These boys give up all their time after school and Saturdays to participate. No sport is ac- tually easy and you don ' t win medals without being aggressive. Many a member drops out because it is to (strenuous to keep up. We are proud of you (who stayed). ROW 1: L. to R. J. Both boys are very fond of the sport and consider it the greatest sport at Central Catholic. Both Steve and Jim ore all around guys. They feel that any- one who attempts to be a member of the team should con- sider many factors. Among them are aggressiveness and strong determination. In the photos Jim and Steve are displaying some of the many holds used in Wrestling, Coach Bakle is assisting in their demonstration. w R E S T L I N G 124 Erwin Walz, Tom Romary, and Mark Schaffer are demonsfrafing some tennis strokes for the photographer. Golf Team This year, once again under the outstanding leadership of their fine coach, Mr. Joe Daniels, the Irish linksmen hope to duplicate their achievement of two years ago. It was then that they became the first parochial school team to win any state championship in Indiana. However, win lose or draw, like all our other Irish athletes, they will be the finest possible examples of sportsmen. Steve Meier shows the form which led C.C. to lost years victories. Soph links-stars D. Petit, J. Tonsing, S. Krull, and L. RofFelsen practicing that all important putt. The Junior members of the golf team S. Meier, S. Ban- gert, P. Ducey, and A. The chief organizers of any team, be it football, basketball, or track, ore the coaches and the managers. The managers of Central Catholic ' s teams come from the student body, they are dedicated boys who serve the cause of C.C. sports. The student managers of all of this year ' s teams, Mike Lerry, Tom Hortzog, Ed Schaub, and Chuck Osterholt, v ere all energetic and untiring in their efforts to keep our teams functioning efficiently. 127 ■K Patrons Most Reverend Leo A.
