0, iglif, Wwn 0ni9Af. An opening victory over an eager Elmhurst quintet pushed our Irish oFf to a flying start on their i952-53 hardwood campaign. Momentarily faltering under a free-throw barrage at Kendalville, C. C. bounced back to stop their County cousins from New Haven. The momentum enabled our boys to put up a real fight against the perennially strong Central Tigers at the North Side gym, before succumbing. The Hicksmen then proceeded to roll over Huntertown, Concordia and Decatur Catholic before bumping into more City opposition and defeat at the hands of North Side at the Decatur holiday Tourney. After a surprising loss in the consolation tilt to Decatur public, our boys returned to Ft. Wayne and pushed past Bluffton and this same Decatur team before being iolted by Central and North in a One-two punch. The Varsity revived again against County quintets, to the tune of four more victories including a thriller against County champ Leo High, a game which was pulled out of the embers in the closing seconds of the contest. The team then took a picnic trip to Columbia City, where they fattened their shooting percentages, bringing home 82 points, a high for the season. The stage was set for a fitting finish in our lone en- counter with South Side at the War Memorial Coliseum. The outcome was a shock and a disappointment, a one- point loss marred by publicly admitted bad officiating. The Irish hit North Side in the sectional on the rebound and overcame a fourteen point deficit in the third stanza while the C. C. rooters among the capacity crowd went wild, only to weaken in the final minutes of the game. lt was a season of thrills, ioyous moments and heart- breaks, and, in the record books, the most successful in several years.
